We decided to stay at The Oak Barn for a short honeymoon after getting married in December - somewhere quiet and luxurious to relax. This was the perfect choice! My wife's reaction when she walked in said it all - "Wow"
From the beautiful rooms, to the lovely cake that was left for us (and the sauna!), the barn was perfect. It was warm, cozy and beautifully appointed. We ate in the local pub (Rugglestone Inn, 5 min walk) and were impressed with the food quality and quantity and had breakfast in the Cafe on the Green - also warm and welcoming.
Can only comment from a winter perspective but the location was what we wanted and we were delighted to stay here. Would thoroughly recommend this to anyone!
We have stayed in Widecombe Cottage (same owners) which is excellent and thought we would try the Oak Barn. We were not disappointed and everything that has been said in previous reviews is accurate. This is a well made barn with a fabulous design which makes the most of the glorious surrounding countryside. It is spotlessly clean, very well equipped and lovely and warm. We have stayed in many "5 star" cottages all over the UK and this is the very best. Thanks once again Richard and Becks for your outstanding hospitality.
We've just returned from a superb week staying in The Oak Barn. The accommodation was faultless: superior accommodation with lovely little touches (home made cake, farm eggs and a bottle of wine awaited us). It was like staying in a luxury hotel. We're veterans of holidays cottages over the last twenty years - this is one of the best. Luxury bathrooms, comfy sofas, immaculate kitchen and lots of DVDs and books for rainy days. A home from home. Becks and Richard were perfect hosts. Friendly and on hand for a chat/advice but otherwise, inobtrusive. Our boys loved the farm dogs, Peggie and Evie. We were delighted to discover we were five mins walk from a fantastic pub (stumbled across a Morris Dancer 'dance off' one evening) and ten mins walk from Widecombe village. You can be walking on the Moor and jumping about the tors (like our boys) within ten mins. Holiday perfection. Can't recommend enough.
Words cannot convey how Richard and Becks have totally transformed a old Barn into this amazing and comfortable space which is both a Home from Home and a relaxing, comfortable and pampered retreat to spend your holiday.
Richard is a master craftsman and its shows. This is an opulent and luxurious barn conversion with attention to detail and loving care at its core.
The Oak throughout is his own handiwork and he has a workshop next door where he handcrafts the fictures and fittings in oak. Words don't convey the beauty he has managed to create throughout.
The bedrooms on the ground floor are serviced by chrome and granite bathrooms that would not look out of place in a central london 5* hotel. Apols we didn't take pictures but they are amazing and luxurious.
The upstairs is a beautiful open space segregating cooking, dining and relaxing with beautiful hand crafted oak and large comfy sofas throughout and wonderfully themed so it really does create a comfortable and relaxing retreat for young and old.
We spent a lovely week her with out two boys (Tom and Will) who loved the space and Richard and Becks have x2 dogs who were lovingly always on hand to greet us as we returned home at the end of the day. The boys loved playng with Peggy and Evie at the end of each day and it made their holiday very special.
The location is idlyillic and just 10 minutes walk from Widdicome on the Moor a lovely chcolate box villge in the heart of Dartmoor.
Within walking distance of x2 very good local pubs and only 10/15 minutes drive from the beautiful Hound Tor and Haytor made thisa superb locations for families, walkers and adventurers.
But what made this stay so special was the very warm welcome by Richard and Becks and the their advice and care throughout. Freshly home made Jam Sponge (Words dont convey how good this was) which just about lasted till Wednesday and milk and freshly laid eggs (and a naughty bottle of wine) greeted us on arrival. They also gave us friendly and useful advice on the local sights and the many things to do.
This is an amazing location to spend a week with or without young family.
We most 'Highly' recommend both the location and the total 'care' Richard and Becks bestow upon their properties and on their guests.
Thankyou Richard and Becks - for a wonderful week in your beautiful cottage!
Back from a wonderful week staying at the Oak Barn. No faults...
1) The barn is stunning, High end in reality and feel. A lovely place to spend a week. Richard and Becks are nothing short of geniuses with the finished result of it.
2) The views and surrounding area is incredibly peaceful and beautiful. Great for adults to relax. Loads to do for the kids too. Both my older boys (9&4) loved the space and also playing with the 2 lovely springer spaniels. Great little pub walking distance too
3) Location is brilliant for days out. Walks on Dartmoor (we did Haytor and Hound Tor with a baby, 4 & 9 year old). Or days out to Dartmouth, South Devon, North Cornwall. So much to do and the absolute furthest journey 90 minutes (most 20-30 mins) by car.
Thoroughly recommend The Oak Barn, for its quality, for the brilliant hospitality of Richard and Becks (thanks for the cake, Becks!), for it's stunning location on the amazing Dartmoor, and for it's situ to venture out and do things. We will be back!
