This has to be one of the best hotels i have ever stayed at, it has everything - a glorious position, very friendly and helpful staff and fantastic food sourced locally. The plumbing is a little erratic but otherwise the rooms are lovely with really comfortable beds, home made biscuits and fresh milk. they even have treats for the dog! my only compalint is that i wish it was a little nearer London so we could go more often.

Room Tip: choose one of the moor facing rooms so you wake up to the stunning view!

I struggle with The Goodwins review as we have just left from four days of utter heaven at Prince Hall. From the friendly welcome from Judith to the impeccable service from all the staff, especially at mealtimes, we had a very relaxing and comforting break. The charm of Prince Hall is the relative size compared to other boutique hotels. Nothing is too much trouble at any time, rooms are homely and cosy as are the lounges ( I spent many an hour whiling away time with Chloe the cat & dogs). Chris's food is exceptionally well presented and well balanced: the chocolate mouse is to die for!!

Room Tip: The moorland rooms are well worth the additional cost

There is no doubt that this establishment is set in the most wonderful location, and is very peaceful. Our welcome by Judith was second to none, although we were not shown around the downstairs but had to do with a point to each room. Our room (Houndtor) has a fantastic view of the moors and is very spacious and has a wonderfully comfortable bed.
However, the shortcomings, for us, took the shine off what could have been an absolutely perfect short three night break.
We were unfortunate enough to have been side stepped by the owners private soiree taking place in the public lounge, where the guffaws were such as my husband and i could not have a proper conversation from across the room.
The en-suite was more like a broom cupboard and was quite claustrophobic. We were inclined to leave the door open when it was in use.The shower flow was almost not existent, and it is some minutes before you realise that the water is actually coming through! The decor was a little tired, and we spotted lots of cobwebs without really looking for them.
Breakfast was very very good and served impeccably by the attentive staff, but we found on more than one occasion items on the menu were not available.
Dinner was again impeccably served but left a lot to be desired with regard to value for money. No doubt if you are used to paying ridiculously inflated London prices, you would think this to be good value.
My husband and I regularly take short breaks in Bed and Breakfast/Hotel establishments in Devon and Cornwall and tend to go for a high standard, being prepared to pay a little more than the usual. This Hotel however, in comparison, does not strike us as being value for money for this area. We have stayed in lots of older houses with potential water problems, but these have been overcome. Must try harder.....

Room Tip: Ask about the size of the en suite and the shower. The moorland view rooms are the best.

Thank you for your feedback, we are saddened you were disappointed with your stay, your comments have been passed on to, and noted by the relevant members of staff who will make measures to ensure these issues will not be repeated.
Being a listed property we are unable to alter the size of rooms, and hope you agree the size of the bathroom doesn’t detract from the wow factor of Houndtor which is more of a suite than a bedroom. We have recently been aware of the problems with our private water supply, and as we speak the water system is being overhauled and all problems have been solved.

As we live within a reasonable distance of this hotel we decided to try the resturant for dinner. The hotel is in a stunning position, lovely views, and very intimate. Dont be put off by it being dog friendly, the hotel was extremely clean and well presented. We were made to feel very welcome by the staff, and enjoyed drinks in the comfortable lounge.Dinner was to an extremely high standard, we both had different courses , and it was all wonderfull.
In conclusion, a lovely comfortable upmarket country retreat, with a fabulous resturant.

A fantastically intimate truly dog friendly hotel. Tucked away down a drive with only a wooden fence between the garden and miles of open moor. Perfect location for exploring Dartmoor with great walks from the doorstep. Great that there was no additional charge for dogs and even our scruffy mutt was welcomed in all rooms except the dining room. Restaurant was relaxed and served high quality locally sourced food. Breakfast options were varied, again using quality ingredients.
Couldn't have asked for a better location for a two day break.

Room Tip: Haytor was spacious with views over the moors
