Fresh, locally sourced, home made and cooked food. Good range and selection. Meat well hung and cooked properly.
Excellent wine list, modestly priced. Very good service.
Sadly the present tenants (chef and wife) are moving on in the first week of March 2012.

Walked to this pub twice during our half term stay .Would normally go to Peter tavy inn (and did) but this was a great surprise. Friendly bar staff who welcomed two soggy walkers and even soggier collie .
Food was excellent rump steak was fantastic and steak and blue pie almost as good.
Beer was well kept and fresh , something many pubs seem to have forgotten how to these days !
I think that during the summer months problems might occur with the tourist volumes passing through, and as the pub is small you would do well to avoid peak times. But out of season it's great .

If you eat here, stick to classic pub food, my partner had a beef and ale pie and it was good, although the vegetables were so so. I had morrocan vegetables and cous cous, which was more like a bad ratatouile and the cous cous was tasteless. Not one chick pea or cumin in sight!

My wife, 5 month little girl and I were house sitting about a mile away from the Castle Inn and it was a lovely day. So we desided to walk there and have some lunch. We arrived just before 2pm and sat in a quiet beer garden and ordered our food, 2xgammon, egg and chips - not too difficult!!

We waited and waited and . . . . . . yep you guest it, we waited! 35 miniutes past and when people who arrived 20 minutes after us were getting their steak and chips we began to worry if we had been forgotten. I went into the bar and asked if we had been or not and they rudely said it was on its way.

45 minutes past and our baby was starting to get a bit fed up and to be honest so were we. We decided to give it until 3pm then we were going to get a refund. The rude lady behind the bar came out to us and sugusted we walked our baby around a bit to calm her!! and our lunch would be 7-8 minutes!!! That pasted and went and so did 3pm, so we packed up went into the bar and asked for a refund. The money was already in her hand and as on script abruptly pushed it into my hand as to say clear off!! We never saw our gammon, egg and chips after over an hour after ordering it on a quiet sunny Thursday afternoon!!!

We had bacon and egg sandwiches after we walked the 1 mile home which was much better!!

Do not go to the Castle Inn - it is a pile of "dog doo doo"

We are always so disappointed with the Castle. It is a wonderfully atmostpheric pub (dark beams, papers, lovely fire) in a lovely village but the food is always a little disappointing and hence appears overpriced as it does not meet expectations.

On a wild and windswept night have a drink in the bar and then ask for a table in the snug. On a good day sit out the front to watch the world go by (if you don't mind the odd car or horse passing by your table, but not out the back, very untidy.

Service is always a bit hit and miss as well, not particularly welcoming (or conversley on occasions too over the top!!!)...probably due to the constant change of owners/managers. Service is fairly slow and they are not keen to please, requests are ofen met with suprise or stoney faced resentment.....(I've been doing it this way for years if you don't like it.....).

It has such a lot of potential...go there for the pork burger and cheesey chips but not for a culinary experience.
