“Food Awful Service Dreadful”
Reviewed March 20, 2011

I recently visited the pub for lunch.
After waiting over 45 mins for our food and no communication, we asked for our money back, to be told the food was now ready.
We still asked for our money back as the food was far too expensive for what it was and looked awful.
We had the steak @ £17 I wouldn't have given more than £7 as it was tiny.

Thank you for your feedback. Your visit coincided with a very busy day which caught the team by surprise and 'hands up' we did not cope as well as we would have liked to.

We have learned from the experience and put steps in place to help us to cope better in the future.

Having been told how good this Innn was by friends, we decided to stop off on our way to Plymouth to sample for ourselves. We were not dissappointed, very attentive service, excellent quality sandwiches, superb selection of wines by the glass & a very relaxed atmosphere, we will certainly return

On Sunday our vegetables were roast potatoes, Cornish salad ‘new’ potatoes, Cornish Savoy cabbage, carrots, Devon swede roasted with rosemary and either Cornish cauliflower or purple sprouting broccoli.

I am very sorry to hear that they were not to your liking. If you had mentioned your concern to your waitress when she asked if everything was alright with your meal we would have been very happy to change them for you.

Had two nights in this beautiful old pub on the edge of Dartmoor. Room was clean and cosy. Breakfast amazing. Great garden with stream. Warm welcome. Evening meals also good - clearly popular with the locals so if your staying make sure you reserve a table for dinner early!

A party of six people stopped in to your establishment for lunch the end of September. Four born and bred Canadians and our friends who were born in Birmingham but now live in Canada. We have never been treated so shabbily in our lives. Your establishment is beautiful. It was the first pub that we had stopped in, since we had just arrived in England. We were excited by such a beautiful spot. I tried to order soup and was told by the lady at the bar to order drinks first, then she would get lunch. She and another staff member then proceeded to ignore us. We were never approached again. They did take lunch orders from everyone else who entered. We were made to feel very uncomfortable. We know that we were treated like unwanted tourists. Our families all came to Canada from England and we feel that England is our heritage. You say in your mission statement that you want to create a memorable experience that we would want to come back to time and time again. You had better start treating all patrons equally if you want to live up to that Mission Statement. Really wish that we had been treated more politely. You were our first experience on our holidays and it definitely was not a good one. We will be coming back to England, but I certainly will just drive past your establishment next time. Our trip took us all over England, France, Italy and Spain. You stand out as the least hospitable business we were in during our six week vacation. I know to you that this is an insignificant incident because we are so far away, but if this happened to us, how many others have been treated this way? As an independent family, I suggest you start thinking about the value of "Word of Mouth" in the world of business.

Thank you for your feedback. I only wish you had made us aware of your concerns during or immediately after your visit as it would have been so much easier to find out what went so wrong and to put things right.

The service you have described is not acceptable and I can only apologise.

Customers, be they local or visitor and regardless of nationality, gender, colour or creed are important to us.

The need to provide good customer service is something we constantly impress on our team and the words within our mission statement are heartfelt and meant.

The feedback we normally receive from customers is very positive, some of which can be seen in the reviews on Trip Advisor. The situation you describe is very out of character for the staff at Bearslake and to be honest a surprise to me. We will of course be reviewing what we can do to ensure this does not happen again, including the possibility of offering table service for bar orders.

If you do return to the UK and are passing please come in and say hello.

We can not express how wonderful our stay was at Bearslake. The location was beautiful, the Inn has so much character and history, we loved returning there each evening. Add to that the kindness of the staff and owners and then the high quality of service, along with the great food - we honestly couldn't have asked for more. Rooms and bathrooms were spotless, comfy beds, we felt so at home. I also took a relaxing, hot bath every night we were there. Customer service was excellent in the coorespondence leading up to the trip, and when we arrived we were warmly greeted and a table was immediately set for us to eat. The place is idyllic and I'm not even exaggerating!

We spent a night at the Bearslake Inn en route home from a visit to Cornwall. The Inn looks beautiful - a traditional English thatched Pub / Hotel. The local beers were very good and the food in the restaurant first class. Breakfast too was top quality. Our room - the Saddle Room, was huge and charming with exposed beams and the birthroom was excellent with both a bath and separate shower.

All in all a great place to stay and very close to Dartmoor if you plan some time touring the moor.
