“Very different, great food and stunning surroundings”
Reviewed October 20, 2013

Stayed recently for 2 nights as a well deserved break away from the mother in law !!
Absolutely stunning lounges and décor very similar to Hogwarts with some of the most unusual and beautiful pieces of furniture I have ever seen, all useable and comfortable !
Very helpful staff everywhere nothing too much trouble, fast and efficient check in. We stayed in a superior castle room which was on the top floor overlooking the grounds, the bathroom had the best view of any bathroom ive ever stayed in. I would describe the room as a homely comfortable room very English décor, loved the Elemis toiletries and homemade fudge at turndown! Ate in the bistro both nights the food was amazing and very reasonable, breakfast too was very good cooked to order with a large selection of fresh fruit yogurts etc .We used the large deco themed swimming pool, which has a steam room/sauna . The only downside for me was the extortionate price of the treatments in the spa, I always have treatments when away(which I appreciate are always a little more in a hotel spa) but the prices were totally ott.so did not partake. The highlight was the falconry display in the mornings with the incredibly witty and knowledgable handler, he was brilliant, don't miss ! Walking around the grounds was also magical, would recommend a stay here anytime, just great and a bit different.

A family weekend in autumn-perfect Halloween setting including the mist. Superb walks and lots of room to enjoy the atmosphere of this beautiful castle. We enjoyed the entertainment with Beaky, the parrot in one of the lounges sitting by a huge log fire. The rooms were a bit on the small side though they were called superior castle rooms. Pool very relaxing with views over the park. The very best surprise was the afternoon tea which was of superb quality, beautifully presented and decent quantity. We would love to come back just for this in future ( it appears that many other people do this since there were no tables left at the time). Worth booking ahead.

We stayed at Bovey Castle with friends on a Groupon voucher deal. Before we went we looked up its rating on Tripadvizor and were a bit bothered by some of the hugely critical and quite abrasive reviews that some have written.
I cannot deny these people's realities but have to say that I barely recognise the place we stayed in compared to the place described by some here.

Turning into the estate through the gates the grounds open up and give a hint of what follows, for golfers I suspect the view is heart warming.

The hotel building itself is magnificent and the views over the grounds and valley are simply beautiful.

On entering the hotel you experience the smell of woodsmoke from the open fires in a number of smaller lounges and the Oak Bar. Staff are warm, relaxed and welcoming.
Check in was quick and easy and once the admin was completed we were shown to our rooms by two members of staff who carried our cases and answered our questions about the building.

Our room was overlooking the car park but someone has to have a room overlooking the car park and as we had paid for a classic room (cheapest rate) this was pretty much as we might have expected! The car park contained some rather nice motors and had a fountain in the middle of it so it was hardly a NCP vista.

Our room was comfortable with wardrobe, chairs, large comfy bed and a 42" Phillips TV. We had tea, coffee, hot chocolate making facilities and complimentary bottles of Spring Water. The bathroom was fitted with a walk in shower and did indeed have plastic rush matting on the floor but try as hard as I can I can't find fault with that. The bathrobes were excellent and the towels large and very plush.

Having settled into our rooms we met in one of the lounges downstairs ordered some pots of tea and a cream tea for one which we indicated would be shared by two of us. This was the first imperfection as what was produced was two cream teas! We made the choice to ask for another couple of plates rather than send one of the teas back as the scones looked so good, our request caused no ripples or problems.

We met in the bar for pre dinner drinks and were greeted by a member of staff who saw us to seats, enquired if we were dining and if so which restaurant, and took our drinks order. We ordered two Japanese whiskeys and he soon returned to say the one we had chosen only had a small amount left in the bottle would we be happy to try the other sort they had to which we naturally agreed. He subsequently brought our drinks together with what had been in the first bottle for us to try as a taster, a very nice touch.

We were collected and taken to the Grill when our table was ready. We ordered and ate food that can only be described as excellent. Steaks were cooked exactly as ordered fish was cooked perfectly. The food presentation was faultless as was the service throughout the meal.
After dinner we retired to the Oak Bar and sat around the open fire with our coffees and drinks and all agreed it had been a great experience. We discussed the negative and scathing reviews on this site and agreed that we simply could not understand how they came about given our experience of the place, the staff and the general ambience of the place.

The beds were comfortable, we saw some mould growth on the stone mullions of the windows in the bathrooms, breakfast was as good as any I have eaten in a hotel (Le Manoir excepted).

We then attended the free falconry display that is laid on at 10am before sadly checking out and making our way home.

In summary, this hotel is in a beautiful building set within an even more beautiful river valley setting and grounds. It offers a warm welcoming relaxed atmosphere which is keenly child and family friendly and offers a variety of activities including golf, fishing country walks amongst other things. It does reveal faults like mould patches on window mullions, stains on carpets, as listed by others but it is a niche country hotel not a homogenised, inner city chain hotel. Staff are friendly and helpful.

It is pricey BUT nowhere near as pricey as Gidleigh or Le Manoir so to suggest that people not bother and go to Gidleigh instead is just silly in reality.

Is it as good as Gidleigh or Le Manoir, which are the two hotels we found ourselves comparing it with? In honesty the answer is mixed. The building and grounds are as good as either. The food whilst very good indeed isn't Michelin star cuisine like the other two. The general level of repair and upkeep is not as high as the other two but we found it acceptable and the overall ambience to be homely and very comfortable. Breakfast was better than our experience at Gidleigh but not as good as Le Manoir. Most significantly the cost was considerably less and therefore pure value for money might be argued to be better than the other two.

We have stayed at these alternative hotels on more than one occasion and they are truly superb places but are also not perfect in practice. Our considered conclusion was that we would prefer Le Manoir and Gidleigh for the food but we would probably rather spend two or even three nights at Bovey Castle for the same price as one night at the others.

Our party of four dropped in for afternoon tea late on a Sunday afternoon; service was excellent and so was the food. The staff were prompt and attentive. A lovely afternoon in a beautiful hotel in a perfect setting, just wish i'd got my clubs in the boot!

It baffles me that a business that clearly knows, and in the main, can deliver good service. The restaurant is an example of this, really very good. However, try to get a drink or snack anywhere else and it's frankly awful. The staff are pleasant etc, but that is not enough. If you order a drink you don't expect to wait 20 mins for it to arrive. A relaxing stay becomes irritating.

Wow! What a building, what a view, what an experience! My wife and I loved this place and will be back. I may gush a little during this review and want to state at the outset that Bovey Castle is not pristine or spotless, but I don't know how such a building could be.
As you approach this hotel the sense of anticipation grows and when you see it in all its glory it is truly breath-taking. We were greeted as we pulled up outside the door, our cases were carried inside and our car was whisked away. Check-in was efficient and like every other member of staff we encountered, friendly and professional.
We walked to our room like children in a sweet shop - so many things of interest and beauty. Our room, a State room was magnificent; so much space, such magnificent views. Bovey Castle managed to combine a sense of being in a home from home but also in a palace. It's as comfortable as a slipper and as grand as my dreams.
I have never stayed in a hotel with a pet parrot of a daily falconry display which could make Bovey Castle quirky but actually enhances its character.
As I said at the beginning we loved this place. We only stayed for two nights but next time it will be for longer. Thank you to the staff and management of Bovey Castle.

We booked 4 nights the first week of October and had a Castle Valley room (16). The room was large and airy and the bed was the most comfortable I have ever slept in. We had a wonderful stay, we used all of the facilities and dined in both the Edwardian Grill and the Bistro. Both were absolutely excellent. The steak was fantastic and likewise the dishes in the Bistro were of excellent quality. Service was attentive and courteous - in fact we found the whole experience warm, friendly and professional. The hotel manager - Fredrico is the star of the show - ensuring your stay is perfect.

There are several warm and inviting lounges with open fires burning, which all adds to the inviting atmosphere.

The grounds are beautiful with some lovely walks and the highlight is definitely the falconry display after breakfast.

We will be back, just wished the English weather could have been kinder to us.

Room Tip: South Facing rooms have the valley views, we stayed in number 16
