“Relaxing stay in sumptuous surroundings”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 18, 2013

We stayed here on a Travelzoo deal and were not disappointed. From our arrival down the long drive through the golf course, to the valet parking, warm welcome and fresh, clean and comfortable room. We enjoyed our tour of the hotel and facilities and happily wandered around the grounds enjoying the beautiful views and peace of Dartmoor. The golf course and putting greens were immaculate and inviting and the range of outdoor country pursuits on offer amazing (if a little pricey). We loved the Scottish baronial feel of the place, the comfortable lounges and bar, the spa, afternoon tea on the South terrace and dinner in the Edwardian dining room (just slightly disappointed to see some guests wearing jeans in the dining room!). We didn't try the bistro as travelling without children but it looked to be an excellent venue for families.

We were made to feel extra special on our wedding anniversary and it was a real treat simply to relax and read the papers from cover to cover. Although we travelled without our family on this occasion, this is clearly a hotel that welcomes families (and dogs) - all of which were well behaved and delightful. We especially enjoyed the very entertaining falconry display and would loved to have stayed longer. The suites and lodges looked fabulous and we also inspected the disabled accommodation with wet room, for future visits with elderly parents. Would definitely recommend for a luxury stay, where guests are made to feel at home and nothing is too much trouble for the superb staff. Extra special mention to Max who served us afternoon tea and in the dining room and was particularly attentive and charming!

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the South terrace and upgrade to the best room you can afford!

Frederico and his staff gave us a fantastic welcome and made us feel like true guests. We stayed at the lodges rather than the hotel but that suited us as we are a large family and hosted a BBQ for family and friends while we were there. Frederico was most gracious when he heard that my daughter was awaiting GCSE results and we celebrated together when they came through. He was attentive to our needs throughout the stay, as were many of the staff. The facilities are all there (golf course, gardens, spa, fishing lakes and landscaping) to make Bovey Castle a stand out hotel but as Frederico acknowledged, further investment is required to make Bovey Castle truly exceptional. A Google search shows that the hotel is in a sale process, so the prospects are good that next time we go (we will definitely be back), the hotel will be in new ownership and can fire on all cylinders. In the meantime, I have no hesitation in recommending a break there. My tip to the new owners - sorry, can't resist - would be to aim to make this a luxury family hotel in the mould of Woolley Grange, rather than a Michelin-starred, exclusive retreat - I don't think the two can co-exist and in the wilds of Devon, with the staff and resources available, you are more likely to deliver the former than the latter. Best wishes whatever you go for!

The classic room we stayed in was very tired, stained wall paper and cushions. Bathroom just had a shower no bath. We ate in the Grill, the service was excellent but the Bream with razor clam came with cockles instead of razor clam, when I mentioned this the excuse back from the kitchen was that they had run out of clams but that cockles were much better! That told me.

If you want to be spoilt this is one of the best hotels we have been to, from the minute we arrived until we left the staff were very courteous and helpful, the food in the Edwardian restaurant was fantastic, the bedroom/bed very comfortable and generous in size - add to this all the facilities Bovey has to offer + Dartmoor on its doorstep then your in for good time - if we were to advise on anything to improve Bovey is that the Bistro doesn't seem to fit in with the rest of the hotel so perhaps some thought could go into addressing this.

We stayed in mid-August and overall we had a good time at Bovey Castle. We had booked through Travelzoo for dinner, bed & breakfast in a classic room. We were given room 46 which had beautiful views across the valley and it was very nicely decorated. Unfortunately, it was opposite some wooden stairs which could be very noisy. We also didn't have a fridge which I was very surprised at for a 5 star hotel. As we didn't have a fridge, we requested an ice bucket and 50 minutes later we were still waiting before giving up and going down for dinner.
The next day we asked to be moved to a quieter room and the reception staff were very accommodating. We were pleased with the second room as it was much quieter and we had a fridge.
The breakfast was excellent with lots of choice. We ate at the bistro during our stay and it was reasonably priced and tasty, although the menu was a little limited. The service on the first night in the bistro was pretty poor (it was almost impossible to get a dessert) but improved for our remaining nights.
On the whole we had a good stay but I don't think we will be back. We got a good deal with Travelzoo but if I has paid full price I would be disappointed.

Room Tip: The rooms with valley views are lovely but try to stay away from the stairs

Having visited in March, we knew exactly the perfect romantic location to spend our tenth wedding anniversary. I can't recommend Bovey Castle more highly, the atmosphere is truly relaxed but the elegance and glamour remain. We had lunch in the Castle Bistro, cocktails in the Oak Bar and dinner in the Edwardian Grill - Bovey Castle is a wonderful experience for 'foodies' - superb dining. Our room was exceptional and the bathroom was vast! Bovey castle has stunning views to rival its glamourous interior. The cosy, lounges and bars make it very easy to relax. The pool is fabulous and extremely clean and luxurious. There is so much to do in and around the hotel that you need not leave! If all of this did not already set Bovey Castle apart from other luxury stays, then the service tops the lot. The staff are excellent with the fantastic manager Frederico at the helm. As soon as you arrive you feel like Frederico's personal guest and he goes above and beyond every expectation in order to ensure that your stay is special and memorable. He is passionate about Bovey Castle and those who visit. We were made to feel like special guests and our anniversary was made truly memorable. Thank you Frederico and staff, we will be back!

As we drove through the stunning grounds our expectations were set for a memorable stay & some of the rooms as you walk though the hotel ooze grandeur. We had booked through Travelzoo (1 night DBB staying in a Classic Room which was looking a little tired & was very warm so we had to ask for a couple of fans). It was a very good size but was located on the ground floor next to the Bistro & looked out on the communal patio so the privacy blinds had to remain down which spoilt the views that you have from the room. We were shown an alternative room in a separate building which was smaller & darker so opted to stay in the original. However, when we returned to our room after dining & things were quieter we could hear the generator/extractor on the wall outside the bistro which is constantly on & made us feel like we were in the flight path of Heathrow Airport (in fact, in the past we have stayed in a Premier Inn next to Heathrow & that room was quieter !!!).
Whilst getting ready for dinner a male member of the "turn down"staff knocked & walked in on my wife just as she had got out of the shower. She advised reception who apologised but then quipped that he had probably walked in on more embarrassing situations in the past !!!
Regarding our dining experience, we had a 3 course meal in the Bistro. I could have purchased most of the items from my local supermarket & prepared a tastier meal myself & would expect a 5* hotel to source local produce & serve up a mouthwatering meal.
We voiced our disappointments to the hotel manager & he said he would respond to us within a couple of days. He did get back to us as promised (unlike some of the other trip advisor reviews) but hasn't addressed all of our comments made.
Such a shame as this hotel has the opportunity to provide many people with such a 5* experience but, in my opinion, falls well short of this in several areas.
