“Could be so much better!”
Reviewed April 25, 2013

Stayed here for one night over a weekend and had a mixture of experiences. In the bedroom the windows needed replacing as the window panes were blown and the wood was rotten. The walls were so thin we could every word that was said in the room next door and we had the lift on the other side - good job we were only there one night. Having said that the bed and the linen were fantastic and made for a comfortable sleep.
The pool and spa area was lovely and very clean but there were no lockers which I found strange.
Breakfast service was dreadful - the staff just did not see what needed doing. I had to ask for tea and toast (no toast rack so soggy toast on a plate!) No member of staff came back to the table to see if I wanted to order a cooked breakfast so I went to the hot buffet, but as it did not look very appetising and was only luke warm, I decided not to bother and went for a croissant!
Tables were left full of dirty plates and china, while the staff just drifted about. Another table ended up having to shout across the restaurant to attract the attention of a waiter after waving their hand in the air for sometime didn't work.
The staff on Reception & Porterage were without exception very pleasant and helpful.
It is such a shame that these things let down what is a beautiful hotel in a stunning setting.

My wife and I stayed over a long weekend as part of a reunion. A litlle hard to find with satnav down narrow country lanes and them not being able to sign within the national park. Be prepared on arrival for staff to 'pounce' and whisk your car away to some unknown destination! Helpful and friendly staff, but a few too many! Stayed in a top floor front room, quite small bedroom but very comfortable bed. Lovely large bathroom which included a wardrobe built in under the eaves but too high to access. Attentive staff in lounges, a little too much so. Tea afternoon and breakfast very weak and not HOT. Lounge a little smoky at times from log fire. Overall an enjoyable stay and ideal for a quiet 'away from it all' stay. A little pretentious to call it 5 star when one thinks what Americans would expect for the price.

Room Tip: Request views over the gardens

Finding an hotel where everything runs with the efficiency of a Swiss watch is unusual. Finding an hotel where luxury is a given and superlative service is the 'norm' is rare. Finding an hotel where these two attributes are effortlessly combined with a relaxing, warm and welcoming vibe is impossible - unless you have the good fortune to stay at Bovey Castle!

We (my wife, our two daughters, their partners and one five year old boy and two year old girl) hired a lodge at Bovey Castle for a long weekend. Such was the laid-back, rural atmosphere, that we were also able (indeed, encouraged) to take our elderly dog as well. The lodge in which we stayed was beatifully designed, furnished and decorated: the kitchen was incredibly well-equipped and, unless you're the sort of visitor that throws a hissy fit at the absence of lobster-forks, the lodge was impossible to fault. Uniquely, Room Service, as well as providing a delicious range of meals, also has a Lego/Duplo service wherein you specify what age-range of Lego/Duplo you'd like and ten minutes later an enormous and compelling box of plastic arrives amidst squeals of glee from children of all ages!!

The pool and health complex was warm, inviting and impeccably clean and tidy. The main hotel was grandiose and magnificent but what could have felt intimidating and rather austere was given a superb human-touch by the friendliness, warmth and genuineness of the plus-four wearing staff!

The falconry display is a must: indeed it was probably the only thing that would have prised our kids away from their Lego. In keeping with the hotel's ambience, it was flawlessly done and accompanied by brilliant, informed but no-nonsense 'geezer-banter' from the guy giving the display.

We're already looking for an opportunity for a re-match. For the six of us, the overall cost was just over £1,800 and yes, one probably could have had a week in the Canaries for that sort of money. In fact, in the past, we've done just that on several occasions. The difference is though, that those Canary Islands holidays have all just morphed into one homogenous whole in our memories, whereas, Bovey Castle will always remain a unique, special and superb memory for all of us: worth every penny and roll-on Visit number 2!!

I stayed in this beautiful Castle some time back. Visited the Dartmoor National Park of wild Horses, the stay was very very comfortable, the food was superb. The morning walk around the golf course and the beautiful gardens is a must for people staying there. The castle dates back to 18th century but is very well kept.

A great place and cant wait for another special reason to return! We especially enjoyed the more relaxed bar and bistro area. The grounds are out of this world and the selection of drinks was great. It was very quiet when we stayed but service was still attentive and professional at all times.

We have just got back from the most relaxing 3 days at this wonderful hotel. From the moment we drove up to the front door to the moment we left nothing was too much for the lovely staff who work here. The setting for this hotel is magical with fantastic views across the grounds. On our first night here we dined in the main hotel restaurant where the food was of the finest quality, beautifully prepared and served, we then retired to the bar where my husband was in his element as there was a magnificent range of whisky! After a very leisurely breakfast we decided to explore the local area, we then returned to the hotel and sat out on the terrace and admired the views followed by a swim in the pool which was an excellent size for a hotel. We mentioned to the hotel manager that we had decided to go into Exeter that evening to meet friends and he even offered us a driver to take us there and back! On Sunday we decided to stay around the hotel all day and relax. We had a light lunch in the less formal brasserie, followed by a traditional afternoon tea later in the day - scones to die for! My treat to myself was an hours treatment in the spa it was so good I could have spent the day in there - which I will certainly be doing next time we stay. The hotel is beautiful but to me the staff made our stay very special, although very professional they all had great personalities and took time looking after th smallest of details. They even have a parrot in the lounge that speaks to you! Can't wait to go back!

Room Tip: We had a room on the first floor overlooking the grounds

Finding a hotel to cater for our clients for different events is not an easy task but the team at Bovey Castle certainly know how to deliver a fantastic VIP guest experience. The staff were extremely professional and provided a first class welcome to the group. We had amazing food, explored the grounds, took part in archery and even had time to fit in the falconry display. I would thoroughly recomment the hotel for a private or business stay.
