“Everything you hope for, but need to work on the service”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 25, 2013

I have wanted to go to Bovey for some time now, and generally I was not disappointed. The castle has a really relaxed feel with lots of beautiful lounges to relax in, a gorgeous pool, stunning grounds, lots of activities - overall everything you could hope for in a hotel. Although the Castle is beautiful and homey, it is starting to tire in places. Our room had a few bits of damp showing on the ceiling, the grout between the tiles was yellowing, and generally the bathroom was not what you would expect of a 5 star hotel these days. That didnt really bother me at all, but the service in the restaurants (particularly the Grill) was bordering on laughable. We had to ask 3 times for a bread roll, 4 times to get our main course correct, and about 5 times and a 45 minute wait for the birthday cake we had pre-arranged for the table. I would return to Bovey, but would like to see the restaurant service sorted out - currently I do not think it is up to the room rates it demands.

My husband and I have just returned from staying at this amazing hotel. On arrival we were blown away by the beauty and location of this hotel , our luggage was taken to our room and our car parked up for us . On check in we asked to be upgraded not a problem and was well worth it, we were then shown around by a very helpful member of staff. We had afternoon cream tea which was mouth watering , the scones were freshly made and warm ! We took the opportunity to use the pool which was warm and very clean , a lovely place to unwind in. Our room was large and clean, homemade biscuits with the tea and coffee facilities . We had noticed the radiator in the bathroom was not working (a very cold night I must add) phoned reception and within minutes a very polite jolly chap came to rectify this. On walking to the restaurant that evening we were asked by a member if staff if the radiator had been rectified a good sign of communication amongst the staff this showed to us . Our evening meal was amazing , staff were able to explain menu choices and the service was swift in a wonderful relaxing atmosphere. The cheeseboard was an amazing selection nothing like I have ever come across before with homemade crackers and chutney would fully recommend . On retiring for the evening we mentioned to reception if we could check out later, not a problem they allowed us to check out at 12 as no one was in that room the next day . The bed was so comfortable had a wonderful nights sleep even struggled to get out for breakfast !! . Breakfast again was of an excellent standard and prompt service. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all members of staff, from reception, waiting staff, maintenance , chefs, housekeeping through to management for a truly wonderful stay at Bovey Castle keep up the good work.!! We did not want to leave and would love to return one day soon, thank you !

Just come back from a weekend at Bovey and generally I had a lovelly time. Lovely hotel in a great setting and the staff were friendly and helpful. However.... The restaurant service was average. On the first night the service took an eternity with the next dioor table actually walking out before their dessert arrived. Our booking was for 7.45 and we didn't get the main course until 9.45. I asked if they were staff down in the Kitchen and the reception replied simply that they were just busy??? When it did arrive the food wasn't dreadful by any means but for the same price I would rather of stayed at Gidleigh Park around the corner and had an infinitely better experience.
The second nights meal was more punctual but the food was still just about par. Again the waiting staff seemed to be clueless as to the food they were serving. Our waitress when asked what she would recommend said that she hadn't a clue as she hadn't tried anything on the menu.
Breakfast the next day really cemented my feeling that the restaurant really needed sorting out. We were seated and asked if we would like some tea or coffee and toast which we ordered. Excellent, except that it took 20 minutes to arrive by which time I had already eaten from the buffet. Along with this my partner and myself shared a glass of orange juice as there were no more glasses materializing throughout our sitting.
This is a real shame because the rest of the stay was wonderful and I would love to think I would go back, but I won't. Not with afore mentioned hotel, which has well run restaurant to die for, around the corner .

Room Tip: Eat Out rather than stay in the restaurant

My wife and two children have just returned from a weeks half term holiday at Bovey Castle.
The hotel and staff were both first class, and the scenery surrounding the hotel is breathtaking.
All of the staff are beautifully dressed and very friendly and attentive. A special mention for the Hotel Manager Frederico Aresti who was always at hand to greet and talk to the guests. As a keen golfer the on site golf course is terrific and well worth playing. The indoor heated swimming pool great fun for the kids.
All in all the Hotel shows the best of Britain.

Room Tip: Always go for a valley room if you can as the views south across the valley are spectacular. The ju...

Stayed here for a couple of nights with husband and our 8 year old son. We were in Room 24 (Junior State Room) which was a lovely large room and plenty of space for us. Room had gorgeous views onto Dartmoor and the golf course etc etc. Room was very clean and there were some lovely touches such as the child size robe and slippers for our son. Lego Room Service also massive hit with our son :-) The hotel is beautiful and the public rooms are lovely. The hotel has a very relaxed atmosphere which is great and just what we needed. The tour when we arrived was much appreciated (big shout out to the lovely Polly who gave us the tour, remembered our son's name from when I had spoken to her a few days previously on the phone to arrange some activities for husband and son and who was just a very natural and enthusiastic member of staff). The pool area was great - lovely big pool - and was much used by us. The falconry display and egg collecting was also loved by our son and was a nice touch. The Manager Frederico was on hand constantly meeting and greeting.

We ate in the Castle Bistro on the first night and lunch on the second day but we found it extremely limiting in choice. I am vegetarian and felt the choice could have been much better. Food was decent enough but we both felt it was not 5 * standard really. Good wine list and very decent prices. The staff were young and quite enthusiastic BUT....they just did not seem to be able to get an order correct. It was quite amusing in the end but again, the food service (Bistro and at breakfast on two days) was just not 5 * at all. Many times the waiter came to our table when we had obviously been given our order with an order for another table. It happened over and over....we must have been really chilled out though because normally this would really irritate me but the staff are generally lovely. Good breakfast choice I should add :-)

Our conclusion - we would definitely go again for the wonderful, relaxed setting and the facilities. Felt like we had been there longer than 2 nights and some of the staff were just super - Polly plus lovely chappie on front door who turned out to be the Resort Manager (sorry didn't get his name). However, it felt like we were paying 5 * prices for 3 * service on a couple of occasions. The staff are young and vibrant but felt a little like they were on a training course out of season. Didn't put us off though....so relaxing!

Room Tip: Try to get a room at the back of the hotel looking onto Dartmoor and the Golf Course. Just lovely...

Just didn't live up to hype (or prices). You are charged for everything with a service charge added - feels very cheap and desperate. The spa is really not a spa at all....just a few cheaply converted rooms with no traditional spa ambience. The waiting room/relaxation room is very makeshift and the spa beds rock hard. The Edwardian restaurant was very nice but the food was not - over prepared and fussy, we were a large group and not one of us had a great meal. Wine list was a shock in such a place - a few pages of very medicore over priced wine, I was expecting a full impressive offering. Service was patchy throughout. A lot of people seemed to be staying there on a discount basis - i found this surprising as it is half term so presumably busy. Plenty of dust and cobwebs in the common areas and carpets everywhere need a good clean - if you are going to allow people to walk around in muddy boots (which i agree is normal in a venue designed for the outdoor living) then you really need a good cleaning program....Bovey Castle doesn't have this. No decent wifi and no mobile phone signal - when I enquired I was told that in a national park this is normal but they had a phone booster in bistro (not much help to anyone who wanted to be anywhere but the bistro!).

A group of ladies (7) visited Bovey Castle for a 60th birthday treat to have a champagne tea. Very disappointed with the service and the food. On arrival our 2 cars were taken and parked for us. Very nice . Entering the building is a nice smell of wood fires . We were shown to our table which was a window seat. When we booked it was mentioned that it was a birthday surprise and could we bring some bunting at which we were told that this would be provided. Sadly it wasn't. We had a dirty cup amongst the 7 !!! The tea arrived . Sandwiches, scones and small cakes . Sandwiches were okish ....scones very nice (but a small dish of cream and jam for 7 people ) and we had to ask for more !!! The cakes were very stale and very disappointing . There was also a chocolate moose which was bitter and tasteless. We had to ask for our champagne and moved to the chairs by the fire to have it. Can you imagine our horror as a member of staff came and started hoovering. Having been in the restaurant trade for many many years I know it is one of the rudest things to do and definitely not good service . We left and staff didn't know where our cars were and we were left to wander around the car park looking for them . On leaving we all smelt very strongly of smoke , so much so that coats had to be aired outside and clothes washed. Can't imagine what it would be like to stay in an atmosphere like that . Having said all this the Castle is in a wonderful position and we made the most of our visit. We wanted it to be a special experience and it wasn't and so very disappointing .
