A brilliant find, family owned and staffed. This C14th Onn is a picture postcard English inn in the heart of Modbury, which is a quaint, and interesting little town with a surprising amount of local shopping.
The traditional pub is exactly as you want - low ceilings, a little dark, comfortable and atmospheric. Service and food was excellent, although there were 2 other alternative eating options within a few doors.
The rooms are recently refurbished, to a good, homely standard with good en-suites and eclectic furnishings. Think 'staying with friends' rather than 'hotel'. I've added this to my must return here list.

A very pretty 14th century Devonshire inn with oak beamed ceilings, stone walls, excellent ales and a beer garden you will not want to leave. Family run, very friendly and helpful customers and staff. A truly welcoming traditional Devonshire inn. Would strongly recommend to anyone visiting Modbury or surrounding areas.

We were staying at a nearby hotel, and wanted a simpler meal one evening. The Exeter is a very friendly pub serving good quality bar food and real ales. There are interesting nooks and corners to sit in and the staff are jolly and helpful.

I have been with family to "The Exe" for Sunday Lunch on 2 occasions now and I have to say it was fantastic both times. The lamb shank is to die for!!

The atmosphere is good and the landlord/landlady are very friendly and welcoming. 1000's of times better than any chain pub any day of the week!

My partner and I stayed at the Exeter Inn Modbury for an evening as a Birthday treat
A typical Traditional English Public house, that has not been ruined,
Traditional Ales, Home cooked food and a comfortable Bed to lie in after a good evening in the pub listening and enjoying the company of the locals.

The Exeter Inn is a very nice traditional pub that now has en suite rooms.
It is situated in the middle of the high street in Modbury.
Modbury as a drive through type of town, but very close to Salcombe.
Accommodation in Salcombe is very expensive and not at all worth it. I was quoted £300 per night at one hotel. and a £250 at another.
It is far better to stay in The Exeter Inn for £50 and travel into Salcombe as I do for work. The town of Modbury does have a parking problem, and the bays on the high street allow only 30 minutes, there are two car parks in the town, one long stay and one short stay, but it is still painful having to pay the prices they ask. One good thing though, both car parks are free from 6pm to 8am, so if you can work around these times you are lucky.
The Exeter Inn has lovely beer and really nice food, cooked are served by the landlady Nikki who is very nice and friendly. The room I stayed in was very nice, a really hot shower, but a few steps up out of the bedroom into the en suite facilities, very easy to fall down and do yourself an injury in the night if you are not careful. The welcome I received by Heather was just simply first class, she is a lovely lady who works most afternoons and evenings in the bar, she is very good fun to talk to and you feel like you are at home. There is a young girl who works a couple of nights a week in the bar and she is very hard work, completely non talkative with one word answers to any questions, and totally miserable along with it, I just hope that when you go there it is an evening when Heather is working.

Richard Kaminski.
