“Hostile”
Reviewed January 8, 2014

On passing we dropped into the California inn on a whim.
Having a dog with us we were told that we may take him into a tiny dingy bar covered in dust and cobwebs. We fully understand that a dog would bring an extra cleaning burden and is not something other people might want next to them while eating, so were happy to sit out of the way, but it would have been nice to see some, in fact, any effort taken over the area.

Our order was taken by a lovely and polite waitress (the only redeeming aspect of the service). Having seen the acolades on banners outside we did not baulk at the prices too much and were looking forward to a treat.

Whilst waiting for the food to arrive we were treated to the extremely grumpy landlord and two regulars views on 'townies' and they were not positive views. These views were not expressed directly to us, in fact the only person to acknowledge our mere existence ( until it was time to pay up and get out) was our waitress.

Food was mediocre, edible but definitely not worth what we paid and certainly not worthy of the acolades displayed outside.

As soon as the last bit of food left our plates, the owner came over, started grabbing the plates and grunted "all done", question mark omitted on purpose.

Feeling ever more unwelcom we went to the bar to pay, had the bill slapped in front of us with a grunt, we paid and left and were very glad to be doing so.

Having read some other reviews, and also the responses i look forward to an arrogant and obnoxious reply.

“Save your money...”
Reviewed January 5, 2014

Written from a diner's point of view, because as a country pub it's fine. The service was OK too and no real issues there, but the value for money lets it down. We came home for coffee and cake because of the prices being asked, and following a main course which was fairly average. Indeed, my roast beef was stringy and not a pleasant experience. This is unfortunate because we don't live too far away, and would not now consider investing again in the restaurant. Don't get me wrong, for a drink and a snack you'll probably find it ideal, but having witnessed the very limited Sunday lunch menu, I could not recommend the place as an eating establishment.

“Perfect Saturday pub lunch sitting by the blazing fireplace with all the papers !!!”

Hadn't been to the " Cali Cross " - which is an old local favourite - for a while and it was good to be back - as ever welcoming hosts - good service - but especially wonderful pub food - i had the calves livers which were perfectly cooked and presented beautifully with to die for fries and vegetables - and noticed that customers at adjoining table were equally complimentary about the Irish stew - all exactly what one needs from a Devon pub - The California Inn just gets better and better !!!!

“Great warm welcoming pub with great food.”
Reviewed November 22, 2013

Always a pleasure to eat at the California Inn. Always made to feel welcome. Atmosphere is always great with good chat and people laughing and a happy time is had by all. We eat there several times a year and food is consistently of a very high standard. We are also holding our works Christmas meal here due to how much we love it. Keep up the good service, great food and banter!

“Unfriendly, overpriced and average food”
Reviewed November 21, 2013

Went to this pub with my family at the back end of the summer. In short wish we hadn't! We were "welcomed" by a very unfriendly landlord and we were made to feel we had put him under great inconvenience for just turning up. I'd suggest he takes up a new profession. Eventually we got round to being served drinks. The beer was very average and at London prices. £3.80 a pint!!!! Crazy for the area, we had been to several other establishments all of which were at least 50p cheaper.

A waitress (who was very polite) found us a table. Half the pub is quite nice, log fire etc. The other half is dark, dated and covered in dust. Not a fantastic location for a meal. We were then greeted by the so called manager. He turned out to be very arrogant which was somewhat off putting. Also later in the night we witnessed him shouting at a waitress just for dropping a fork, a pretty horrible way to be treating your staff, should be ashamed. Especially in front of a crowded pub of diners. In addition to this we also heard him gossiping about what can only be described as unsavoury, a terrible thing to do with young children around.

Finally onto the food. The food was at best ok. Tasted just like a reheated meal and I highly doubt it was fresh. In fact my wife who is vegetarian (not many options) had the cannelloni and this was straight out of a pack. Not what you expect for £11. For the price the food was rather poor. Lumpy mash, tepid sauce, watery veg. How they won their awards is a mystery. Must of bribed someone. Worse still as an advocate for local produce I asked the waitress where the "local" cheese came from. One of them was from France! False advertising is a serious thing.

All in all an awful pub with above average prices and below average service. Go elsewhere!
