firstly its not realy a house ,but a old school turned into cottages.we stayed in the largest cottage, that sleeps 12.very old building that needs lots of work doing to it.window had been broken and boarded up but not sure how long they had been broken.went for a week (friday -friday) for new years eve etc with the family.
location for going to other areas short drives away is great like dawlish, exeter, exmouth teingmouth etc.
gas is pricey and its a big house to heat we took are own logs for the fire and a gas bill to check on what we had used and asked how much a therm we would be charged so as not to be had over as in previous reviews,,the electric is free so take a modern electric heater with u in autumn winter times.
the house isnt the cleanest but it does add to the character of this old house.
4 pubs in the high street all of them made us feell welcome and only a couple miniutes walk to the furvest away .worth a punt staying here gone on give it a go

Room Tip: take modern electric fires with you if u hire the family for 12 house

The house has plenty of character from the outside and the room we stayed in (number 6) was very spacious. The downside was that the decor was very dated, although I would say it was clean. The front room was left with clutter lying around putting us off from using it and generally it felt like the place wasn't being run with any real passion. Has the potential to be a lovely place, but needs to be envigorated.

We hired the whole house for a group of 12 for a weekend stay. The house is full of character with lots of period features and beams. Plenty of beds and bedrooms and a reasonable number of bathrooms, some ensuite. There is a large main sitting room, a spacious dining room and another smaller sitting room so plenty of space. It was a convenient base for us to go out and enjoy the various activities that Devon has to offer.

Agree completely with the other reviewers that the house is somewhat dusty; the owner has lots of knicknacks which cover virtually every surface. This does add to the the character of the property, but they do unfortunately act as dust magnets and it is evident that the house is not thoroughly cleaned as often as it should be. Decor and carpets were rather dated (swirly carpets!) and a bit grubby in places. Some of the crockery and cooking utensils in the kitchen were not clean so we had to wash them before they could be used.

Please be aware that heating is not included in the initial cost of renting the house, so you will have to pay for this separately and, annoyingly, there are no heating controls in the house so you will have to ask the owner to turn it on from her house. We were frequently cold and had to keep asking the owner to turn the heating on - it cost £20 for the weekend. We also ran out of logs for the fire quickly, as a result of this, and by this time the owner had gone out for the evening! It would be better if a flat rate was just included in the cost of rental and heating controls were in the house.

Lovely house in a good location, but I would look elsewhere next time I was looking to stay in the area.

10 of us stayed in this large house, 4 mums and 6 teenagers.
There were 6 bedrooms so plenty to go round, the beds were very comfortable. There were enough bathrooms and a huge living room which was a super space for us all to sit and relax in the evening. Extra dining room and smaller sitting room which we didn't use.
The kitchen was well equiped but no washing machine in the house.
Agree with previous comments that the house was dusty and obviously is not cleaned thoroughly but for us it was well located and the positives out numbered the negatives.
We went on some lovely circular walks from the house that we copied from a local book in the library.
Pubs all very welcoming and the Bishop Lacey, just across the road served 10 of us with food on a 'party night' and Valentine's night.
Went to Torquay, Plymouth and Haldon Forest - literally just 10mins away and did Go Ape! So lots to do even for teenagers.
The heating is controlled from the owners cottage which was inconvenient for us as we had to keep saying if we wanted it on/off, turned up/down. In summer this wouldn't be a problem.
Beware gas charging, it is NOT £1 per unit - there is a formula you can use but we were going to be charged 40% more than we should have been until we showed the owner how to work it out. I have written to the owner to inform her of the error and she has replied and will address this problem.

We hired the whole house and found it to be full of character and there was lots of room for the 10 of us. The garden is through the courtyard car park and shared with the smaller property next door. The lounge was huge and there was a second one for the kids. The kitchen had a dinining table with 10 chairs and there was an additional spacious dinning room too.

All in all we never got under each others feet and were always comfortable. The house looked very pretty from outside and had some charming features like big heavy wooden doors and a decent fire in the lounge. The higgledy piggledyness of it appealed to us.

The house was really well positioned in Chudleigh, which was a good place to stay with some decent shops, pubs and a cafe and in a good spot for early morning walks.

On the downside the place isn't kept in the best state of repair and obviously isn't dusted as well as you might hope when spending in excess of £2,000 for a weeks stay. Whilst carpets in bathrooms might be to some people's taste in their homes I think in a rental property such as this they just become smelly.

We found Torquay and Exeter (about 12 miles away each) to be acceptable distances to travel to and enjoyed being somewhere a bit quieter in the evenings.

We would happily stay at The Old House again as the character and location outweighs the tiredness and a bit of dust for us; although we might try to negotiate on the price.

Room Tip: All the rooms are quite spacious enough but there is a smaller room with an electric ensuite shower. Friendly pub over the road.
