I have been wanting to stay at Gidleigh for at least 30 years, and at last have made it. Luckily it lived up to my expectations! We stayed for 1 night, 2 would have been better. The welcome we had on arrival was warm, the staff were very helpful. We were given a complimentary upgrade, always a nice surprise. The room was a little dark but there was a balcony which overlooked the gardens & river. The setting is quite beautiful and the spring bulbs were just starting to come through.
We had a wonderful dinner, going for the full 8 courses of the tasting menu. Portions were small & delicious, we asked for wines by the glass to suit what we were eating, the choices we were given worked well & were not overpriced. The extra petit fours were just too much for us though!
The beds were very comfortable, the bathroom was spacious with a good shower. Breakfast was very good. We then did a walk recommended by the hotel, a 2 hour walk onto the moor, it was beautiful. We got a little lost, so it actually took 2.5 hours, worth it though.
I am certainly going to go back, and not leave it 30 years this time.More
