Two special occasions followed one after the other in February - and we decided that both should be at Gidleigh Park. What a location! Our first trip was for lunch on Valentine's Day - the journey was made somewhat more entertaining in the pouring rain, standing water on the roads and the howling gale, but when we arrived the welcome made it worthwhile. Aperitifs in the lounge before being taken through to a lovely oak paneled dining room, where we ate beautiful food - not just the flavour but the presentation; mini works of art. I had gnocchi followed by sea bream - both perfectly seasoned and fabulous to eat. However, the desserts - what can I say. I had the plate of apple - it was amazing, apple ice-cream sat on perfectly equal (well to the naked eye) little squares of stewed apple (respect for the patience and attention to detail) an apple mousse that looked like a green apple and a mini apple tart tatin - all full of apple flavours. Add to that the chocolate dessert the other half had - wow! We weren't rushed but at the same time we did not feel that we had to wait either - perfectly measured.

Then back we came for a birthday celebration and stayed the night. The weather was slightly less wild which allowed us to have a short wander around the grounds after we'd settled in. We were welcomed warmly again and shown to the room. It was lovely (with a lovely name - Laughter) with views over the gardens and river. The bath was huge and the bed very comfy. We went down for dinner for aperitifs, we perused the menu and studied the wine list; a weighty tome which offers a little "light" reading before dinner. With the help of a knowledgeable and helpful sommelier we were introduced to a new grape variety from Italy - beautiful (and it went well with the meal!) The food was lovely - we both had pigeon to start and to follow I had venison that was so tender I think I could have cut it with a spoon which was accompanied by a superbly flavoured chestnut and fig puree which complemented the meat perfectly. My other half had wonderfully flavoured lamb, both dishes were very well presented. So to desserts - after our first experience it was going to be difficult to better our lunchtime treat. Well, the prune and Armagnac souffle did that without any trouble - it was so light (and suitably boozy) and the passion fruit mousse was very good. Slept like a log - and were woken with tea brought to the room. Breakfast was freshly cooked and very tasty. All in all a fabulous experience for a special occasion.

Dear Wanderwomen19

Its is fantastic to hear that you choose Gidleigh Park for your Valentines lunch and then to return again for a over night stay to celebrate a birthday. Here at Gidleigh Park we understand how important special occasions are and to be chosen to celebrate two is a great honour.
It is so nice to read through the combined reviews and to see how much you enjoyed both occasions. We are of course very proud of what we do and to read reviews such as yours makes it all worthwhile, we very much look forward to welcoming you back for that next special occasion. Kindest Regards

We received this stay as a gift. Everything was very nice-luxurious & all the staff were very pleasant & helpful. This is def the place for a special occasion if you enjoy the sort of attention & atmosphere which comes with such a place, however we felt that we prefer our luxury to be a little less formal.
I wasn't aware before our arrival that 'denim' is frowned upon for the evening meal. This was all I had taken & felt slightly uncomfortable, but although I felt like I got a few stares, everyone was lovely & helpful & it certainly wasn't mentioned.
The food was high quality & cannot be faulted.
We enjoyed our room & the complimentary dates & madeira wine & the lovely roll top bath.

No complaints-all good & reading through the other reviews, I agree with all the lovely comments, but I think, not really our cup of tea!

Dear Jen7ify

Thank you for taking the time to post your review, I am very pleased to hear you enjoyed your stay with us.
Here at Gidleigh Park we understand that people come to relax and feel comfortable so I hope you did not feel conscious about wearing smart jeans, we would never frown upon this and feel we have a more modern relaxed approach to dress code.
Kindest Regards

We stopped at Gidleigh Park for lunch at the end of our short honeymoon in Devon last month. We'd been wanting to visit for a long time and I'm so pleased we got the chance to go while in the West Country. The food and service at lunch was exceptional. I was worried that on a Tuesday in Feb it would be too quiet and formal to be enjoyable but I was wrong - we felt relaxed and spoiled.
It was the hidden away nature of the house and the beautiful gardens and river that made it so special though - we felt as though we were in a fairytale. We'd love to return and actually stay (once we've saved a bit!) one day. A lovely way to end our honeymoon.

Our family arranged afternoon tea for us for our Ruby Wedding and it was excellent. The staff are very attentive and the afternoon tea could not have been better. The house and grounds are in beautiful setting with lots of walks in the grounds by the river. Will definitely go back.
