5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 10, 2013

I said I would be back last time, and finally here we were. What a stunning place this remains. There has been changes in staff, and the new manager is slightly different in manner to the completely charming lady we had last time, but he is helpful and present just as she was.
Our previous booking was remembered to an almost embarrassing level - we were upgraded once again to stay in Kitty, and were asked "and would you like two green teas delivered to the room at 8:30am in the morning, as last time". Well, yes thank you we would!
This time we took advantage of the tennis court and had a couple of sets to work off the food to come. The racquets and balls were a little tired, but then so was our technique and so it evens out. The kitchen garden was again a very pleasant space to walk around, and the grounds are as immaculate as ever. We made use of the pantry for teas and biscuits, and were ready for aperitifs at 7:45pm. Champagne, canapes, a sublime wine list, and spoilt for choice with the food. I was in heaven. We both had the tasting menu and it was very good, highlights being the mackerel and the beef. Service was again faultless and the cheese board a thing of delight - there must have been over 30 cheeses available and the young cheese waiter took his job seriously and was even studying up in his spare time on cheeses.
Particular mention goes to the french (?) waiter we had for dinner and for breakfast who had a fantastic blend of humour and professionalism. Equally the sommelier was all you would expect at an establishment like this.
Again, I did not want to leave, and again, we will be back. Yes, it is very expensive, but what price perfection?

Treated to dinner and a night at Gidleigh Park for our 30th anniversary. As we live fairly locally, the road to the hotel didn't surprise us unlike some other reviewers. When we arrived, we were given a free room upgrade because it was a special occasion. The staff were incredibly efficient but friendly and nothing was too much trouble. I particularly liked the larder idea, a kitchen with everything you need to make tea, coffee, chocolate and help yourself to beautiful home made biscuits. The dinner was out of this world. We had the tasting menu and had plate after plate of the most fabulous food we'd ever eaten. The grounds are very special and we explored before we left the following day.

My husband and I stayed here for the weekend to celebrate our wedding anniversary and thought it was beautiful. The road up to the hotel is very narrow and bendy so you have to be very careful. When you finally get the hotel you breathe a sigh of relief. What a sight though! A very impressive building set among wonderfully maintained gardens. Check in was handled well and we were shown to our room on the second floor. We had booked the deluxe room with a private roof terrace and we were very impressed. A table with 2 chairs on one side, 2 sun loungers and a hot tub on the other with a lovely view over the garden and tennis court. Dinner in the restaurant was fabulous and the main reason for our visit - see separate review. Our package included champagne and canapes before dinner, evening meals on both nights with wine, a cellar tour and a bottle of port with a decanter as a leaving gift.

I took advantage of the gorgeous weather and took to the sun loungers on Saturday while the husband watched the Lions game. Both happy with our morning, we picked up our pre-ordered packed lunch (charged around £25) and headed out for a walk. The hotel provides maps for 3 different routes and we opted for the 2 hour one which was long enough in that heat. Not for the unfit or infirm as the hills are very steep. The boundary walk is much shorter and easier on the legs.

At £1735 for 2 nights, it's not cheap and leads me to my first gripe. Although staff were aware of our anniversary at the time of booking (the manager even mentioned it on our first night) - there was nothing to celebrate the fact. Paying that amount of money surely warrants a vase of flowers in the room and a card? Apparently not.
My second gripe is not being offered our cellar tour until we were packing up to leave on Sunday morning. Last gripe is having been charged £31.50 for 2 beers from the bar and £48 for wine we did not have. My husband doesn't check bills before signing for them, so we'll have to live with it.

These gripes would not deter us from visiting again. Our room was beautiful and the bathroom had a lovely walk in shower as well as a roll top bath. Everything was spotless and our room was cleaned in the time it took us to have breakfast. The food in the restaurant was top class and worthy of the Michelin stars it holds. Pricey, but you get what you pay for.

Room Tip: Book the deluxe room with the hot tub on the terrace

Dear Amy70,

Thank you very much for your review and for your kind words about your room and your dinner in the restaurant. We were really lucky with the weather over the weekend and it is good to know that you put the loungers to good use whilst your husband enjoyed watching the Lions beating the Australians.

I have acknowledged your comments and I would really like to have the opportunity to resolve these issues with you directly and would appreciate if you could contact me directly on generalmanager@gidleigh.co.uk.

Kindest regards

Damien Bastiat

We saved and saved to stay here as it is on our bucket list - and it did not dissapoint!

Yes we got a little lost, i think everyone does - but we saw the signs that told us just to keep going!

When we arrived, we were greeted and whisked straight to our room after a little tour. We had views of the gardens and landscape which is picture perfect! The gardens were pretty, the water garden beautiful and we loved the river that runs through the grounds. They also have croquet and mini golf, but we didnt play either.

Our room was lovely with L'occitane products and very fluffy towels. The bar is small, but well stocked with choice, the lounge is beautiful, make sure you walk around the whole building and look at all the stunning paintings.

Now the best part - the dinner. it ws truly our of this world, if you stay were you MUST eat, two Michelins at its best - we have been to a few and this is the best we have had!! The petit fours were my favourite, although it is hard to fit them all in after such a big meal - the staff are very happy to put them in a cute box to take away with you!

Staff were wonderful, couldnt do enough for us, thank you to the lovely lady on reception and all the restaurant staff

We stayed at Gidleigh Park in March - having meant to stay there for a while - and it was well worth the wait. The 'interesting' country road to the property only adds to the anticipation and sense of adventure.

Once you arrive it's special from beginning to end. The rooms are large, luxurious and have fab views over the gardens and the moor. The food is unforgettable (unless you've also had the wine flight - which makes memorising things slightly harder...).

Staff are polite, friendly and always on hand. The grounds are beautiful and large enough to have a decent stroll around. I now want to go back and try the most breathtaking putting course I've ever seen - it was closed to allow the grass to recover when we were there.

Overall, quite simply one of the best places we've ever stayed.

We were part of a larger quite demanding Oldtimer rally group - not an easy task particularly at dinner times - yet our whole stay was up to perfection from the first warm welcome, during each one of our exquisite dinners to the very last moment of bidding farewell. All staff are highly skilled, customer-oriented, professional, highly motivated and always friendly and helpful, guided by the discreet yet strong leadership and personal involvement of the senior team. The location is amazing and the room unforgettable.Thank you all - wish we could have stayed longer!

Room Tip: Corner junior suite above entrance overlooking garden; yet I think they are all stunning

My boyfriend treated me to a stay and dinner here earlier in the year as a birthday pressie (lucky me!) And I have to say the whole experience completely wow-ed me.

The surrounding area is beautiful - we've never experienced such great and attentive (but not intrusive) service. We were told on arrival we'd been given a room upgrade, I was stunned at how gorgeous our room was! Huge wet room style shower, roll top bath with views out over the grounds, the hugest bed I've ever seen, absolutely amazing.

We had the eight course signature taster menu which we just couldn't fault, every course was absolutely delicious and the service was brilliant - no off-putting loitering around the table which you can get at some high end restaurants, though someone would always appear as if by magic if you ever needed anything. We also had great help choosing some wines to match (no sneers that we tended to pick the most affordable options ;) Up there with our best meals ever.

So all in all we were made to feel like royalty, it was an experience I won't forget in a hurry.
