Lovely place, rooms are good and beds very comfortable. Food and atmosphere in bar very good. Only 4 miles from Totnes so very well placed and just round the corner from the Riverford Organics Farm Field Kitchen.

At last a place where I could have something to drink other than diet coke !
Sadly our sandwiches were not so exciting. My steak ciabatta turned out to be a wrap with some inedible steak in it but the majority was ok and my friends chicken and bacon ciabatta was again ok.
The nuts we brought from the bar came on a dish yet nowhere to discard the pistachio shells and were quite over priced.
All round just an average lunch.

We've stopped here a few times for a drink on our way to Salcombe and decided this time to travel that bit further and give our pennies to a local business rather than the rip off motorway service stations!
The food was good pub food - we only had burgers but heard plenty of other people rating the food as they came to pay their tab at the bar. For a Monday lunchtime it was rather busy, showing that it is frequented by locals. The bar staff were friendly and knowledgable about their products. There was a good range of food, with daily specials being served all day and a great selection of wines, lagers and real ales for those not driving! Will definitely be stopping here for refreshments rather than a service station whenever we come this way in future!

Having enjoyed a meal here for five people on Mothers Day (our first visit) we decided to return in order to celebrate a family members birthday......what a mistake that was! We were bitterly disappointed to say the least.

Although the inn had a nice atmosphere and the staff were friendly, things did not start well. On arrival we ordered some drinks at the bar, only to discover that no one knew how to make a Mojito cocktail, even though it was being promoted. To be fair, the girl serving said she would find out and gave it her best shot, however, this ensued a fifteen minute wait. We also found the drinks expensive compared to other establishments we frequent.

Before our meal we sat in the bar area and found the floor littered with rubbish/food and had to wipe dirt off some of the chairs with baby wipes and serviettes before we could sit down......not a good impression. We also found the ladies toilets to be in dire need of an upgrade.

We thought that things could only get better, however, on going to our table at 8pm we found that it was not ready and had to stand and wait for one to be made up. The menu did look inviting and whilst the three starters arrived relatively quickly (and were in the main enjoyed), they were all lukewarm at best. We had to ask for the sauce that was meant to accompany the whitebait as it had been forgotten.

The real disaster was to follow. Even though the restaurant was not particularly busy for a Friday night, we waited approximately three quarters of an hour for our seven main course to arrive. When they did, the food was mediocre at best, the portions small and again lukewarm or cold.

The 'award winning haddock' was full of bones and very overcooked. The vegetables that came with the meals were limp and cold. The pastry on the beef pie was rock hard. The burrito was nothing to write home about. The worst meal was the tiny portion sea bass......floundering in a very deep pool of flavourless olive oil. In the main inedible. The waiter also delivered the mustard, which was meant to accompany the pie, with the sea bass and we did not realise this until half way through the course. The only saving grace was the sausage and mash which was very tasty, however, again lukewarm. To be honest, in any other circumstances the majority of the food would have been returned, however, we were all hungry and couldn't bear the thought of another long wait, so persevered.

Even though one member of the party was still attempting to hack her way through the pie, the waitress then began clearing the dishes of those who had given up on their food. When we pointed this out to her, she carried on regardless and then came back to ask if the rest of us wanted to order our desserts! We sent her away, however, before leaving she asked for our feedback regarding the meal and duly noted all the above complaints. We were advised that she would pass this on, however, no one from management came over to the table to discuss our concerns or offer an apology.

As some of the group could not finish their main courses and were still hungry, we decided to order pudding and hoped this would be much better. How wrong we were! On arriving at the table with the dessert blackboard, we were duly informed by the waiter that there was no ginger cheesecake or no sticky toffee pudding left (which he found quite amusing), so considering that was what the majority wanted we went without!!! We decided not to risk coffee. It was a bad end to a bad evening, however, I suppose considering everything else we shouldn't have been surprised! In fact it was almost laughable.

We got the impression that the place was extremely disorganised. It was obvious that the young staff were trying their hardest, however, struggling through no fault of their own. We felt that management and the head chef (who obviously runs a poor kitchen) were entirely to blame. To make our disapproval known we did not leave a tip, however, in retrospect we should have demanded a reduction to the bill.

Due to this disappointing experience we will never return and also advise friends and family to steer well clear. As said, it made things even worse that it was supposed to be a special birthday treat. We felt it a shame as this place could be something really special if managed properly.

To sum up, our party of seven experienced poor and disorganised service, long waits, lukewarm to cold food which was mediocre at best. Food and drinks were relatively expensive, portions small and choices on the menu limited as the chef obviously has a problem with ordering.

Go spend your money elsewhere!

Very conveniently located and therefore could be a lucrative venue which you would be happy to stop at. But....there is really no reason to stop. A predictable menu, but if well prepared would be fine, but very mediocre. We were told there were no jacket potatoes and therefore no wedges, but lo and behold, wedges appeared along with the chips we ordered in their place (they did not charge for them, fortunately).

Not sure how you can use a state of the art coffee machine and produce such lousy cappucino! Do not stop here for coffee! In fact, give it a miss and head somewhere with home cooked food.
