“Good Value Hotel, shame about the WiFi”
Reviewed May 13, 2009

Booked through Laterooms, great hotel and location, food fantastic and service was second to none, downside i wanted a hotel with WiFi but this wasnt good, saying that it ticked all the boxes, ensuite was small, but prices were excellent. Staying with the big boys if you want all the mod cons but these dont have the charm and good food.

Stayed May 2009, traveled on business

I booked Furzeleigh Mill for one night as I had to make an early visit in the area. Very disappointing. The decor was extremely tired, dingy and not surprisingly, even though it was the school holidays, I appeared to be the only resident! The owners were pleasant enough, but the whole place gave every impression of being on its last legs. The garden was unkempt, the carpets swirly 1970's and the decor chipped with cheap tacky furniture. A great pity as the immediate area is quite beautiful. The room and bathroom were clean, but at £42 a night for a single, I would not return. Should have checked Trip Advisor before setting out!

I have visited the area yearly for the last five years and I keep changing accommodation in the hope that I can find somewhere reasonable, but I have so far failed. The Furzleigh Mill is no exception. A basic B&B (despite calling themselves a hotel), which has definitely seen better days. The bar lounge is dismal; the sort of décor that went out with the ark and tired and slightly smelly carpets. The breakfast room is uninviting, same carpets as the bar, old furnishing and the so called buffet is extremely basic and very poorly presented - not the place to linger for a leisurely breakfast. My room was very small and again much in need of TLC; a sagging mattress (this seems to be the norm in the hotels in the vicinities!) and the tiniest of bathrooms, including smelly drains and a washbasin you could barely dip your fingers in. Yet again, not the sort of bedroom you'd like to spend too much time in. Staff are courteous, but distant and everything seems to be a real effort. Beware also about the outside door code; you don't get told and if you get back late you will have to wake up the proprietor to let you in.
