Owner description: The South Devon Railway is one of the West Country’s best loved tourist attractions and is the longest established steam railway in the region. The former GWR branch line runs along the stunning valley of the Dart between Buckfastleigh and Totnes on a 14 mile round trip. The steam trains offer a wonderful all day, all weather attraction for families and people of all ages. The railway also has a fascinating museum, gardens, riverside walk, locomotive restoration workshops, a gift and model railway shop, refreshment rooms and more. Free car parking at Buckfastleigh, just off the A38, midway between Exeter and Plymouth; Totnes is a 500 yard walk from the main line station.

“South devon railway, totnes rare breeds farm, otters and butterflies”

Spent a delightful day - ( using the combined attractions ticket). Very interesting all round.
We had no children with us but still loved the rare breeds farm, feeding the animals and contact with them, also found out how tiny field mice are!
The steam railway was lovely, a real blast from the past. Café was excellent.
Butterfly house is warm and humid, very interesting but could only stand a short time here.
The unexpected highlight of our visit was the otters, so playful and full of character. Do make sure you are there at a feeding time, the otter keeper has lots of interesting information to pass on and is so obviously very fond of his charges.
The staff at each venue were helpful and friendly and happy to engage in conversation about their particular aspect of this lovely mix of attractions.
Thoroughly recommended.

“Wonderful adventure let down by the cafe”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 28, 2014 via mobile

Arrived for the 10 o clock train, had to leave travel system behind as there was no facility to take it with us, luckily had packed the sling.
Lovely train ride through unspoilt countryside, our two half year old thought it was brilliant.
Cane back on the 11:30, still magical.

Downside,
Ordered lunch at cafe, one meal was wrong (prawn salad not prawn jacket) and the pasty never Arrived, gave up waiting, no one free to ask, only one person serving and a 12 year old bringing food out.

Oh well, train journey was so lovely can't let it spoil the day

“A must for all the Family”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 24, 2014

Visited 20th June 2014. It's all here! Great cafe, Model Railway (plus shop - very good) and of course Steam Trains. Free parking helped as the cost for 2x Seniors return to Totnes was £22.80 but well worth every penny (trip takes half hour each way).
Buffet on board so the cool drinks we purchased were very welcome. Disabled, children etc very well catered for. Basically a very enjoyable morning.

“So friendly”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 21, 2014

I do enjoy visiting railways and this was a particular treat.
The volunteers were incredibly friendly and welcoming and the food at the dining room delicious.
On the particular day, children from the school in Buckfastleigh were acting out a WWII evacuation with the railway laying on a special train to take them all away........ nice touch, the kids seemed to like it.

Highly recommended.
