Owner description: The South Devon Railway is one of the West Country’s best loved tourist attractions and is the longest established steam railway in the region. The former GWR branch line runs along the stunning valley of the Dart between Buckfastleigh and Totnes on a 14 mile round trip. The steam trains offer a wonderful all day, all weather attraction for families and people of all ages. The railway also has a fascinating museum, gardens, riverside walk, locomotive restoration workshops, a gift and model railway shop, refreshment rooms and more. Free car parking at Buckfastleigh, just off the A38, midway between Exeter and Plymouth; Totnes is a 500 yard walk from the main line station.

Went on a hot day in July and could have roasted in the train. £72 for a trip of 6 adults and one child seemed a bit steep for what is, a 7 mile track and although theres not much to do at the 2 stops, the totnes shops are a good 15 minute walk away.

Lovely place to visit, staff are friendly, train rides are good fun and great views all along the Devon countryside from Buckfastleigh to Totnes. A little on the expensive side, you get an hour train ride and 15 min stop at Totnes for £34.60 (family of 4) but we were on holiday so a nice treat. Toilets and refreshments on the train.

We chose to ride on the last train as I find where ever we go all Steam train places are packed full of school kids between 10am-2pm! We saw a group just leaving when we arrived. Last thing you want on a relaxing holiday is a whole hoard of school children, our 2 are just fine enough! lol

Gift shop and cafe available and plenty of parking.

Visited on the 7th July 2012 for the military weekend they were having. Had a great day out. Plenty of engines on show. There is a garden railway too, not sure of the gauge of this however, might have been O. Took the scenic river walk in addition to taking in the military vehicles on view.

We picked.....by accident a 1940's theme weekend and spent a fantastic 4hours or so enjoying the experience and the friendly folk that made it extremely special.Prices are fair and everyone seems to enjoy what they do....it's a definite VISIT if you want to step back a few decades.....great scenery as well.

Always a fun experience to travel by steam train, especially in beautiful surroundings and when you're being taken from seeing otters to stroking owls!
