“Authentic Recreation of a Great Western Railway Branch Line!”

South Devon Railway
Certificate of Excellence

Attraction details
Owner description: The South Devon Railway is one of the West Country’s best loved tourist attractions and is the longest established steam railway in the region. The former GWR branch line runs along the stunning valley of the Dart between Buckfastleigh and Totnes on a 14 mile round trip. The steam trains offer a wonderful all day, all weather attraction for families and people of all ages. The railway also has a fascinating museum, gardens, riverside walk, locomotive restoration workshops, a gift and model railway shop, refreshment rooms and more. Free car parking at Buckfastleigh, just off the A38, midway between Exeter and Plymouth; Totnes is a 500 yard walk from the main line station.

“Authentic Recreation of a Great Western Railway Branch Line!”
Reviewed October 26, 2011

I'm old enough to remember this railway operating under British Railways in the 1950's. Its much smarter and spiffier now than in those days but it does accurately recreate the atmosphere of a Great Western Railway branch line. It also carries far more passengers now than it did under British Railways and there are some adjustment and accommodations for this. The only detractors from the atmosphere are the plethora of add-on attractions that seem to have grown up in haphazard fashion around Buckfastleigh Station, some of which are not in the best of condition or appear as first rate attractions to complement the South Devon Railway.

“Good family day out”
Reviewed October 12, 2011

We picked the train up from Buckfastleigh through to Totnes where we had afternoon tea (Devon style). The train is the good old fashioned steam type with traditional carriages. It has some great views over the river and countryside. Great for kids and a reasonably priced day out. It can be a few hours round trip or you can make a full day of it by stopping at the rare breeds farm at Totnes or the Otter and Butterfly Sanctuary at Buckfastleigh (you can buy tickets together with the rail to save a few pounds).

Seemed quite popular with the oldies too as a coach load turned up for our train. The trains have plenty of space though! Recommended and would go again when I'm next down in Devon

“Sunday afternoon”
Reviewed October 2, 2011

If you enjoy steam trains this is a very scenic line which can be enjoyed by young and old. Plenty of parking at Buckfastleigh and the cafe/restaurant was spacious as well.

The staff were really friendly as well and we thoroughly enjoyed our day there. Visited the Butterfly and Otter Sanctuary next door as well

“Great trip!”
Reviewed September 13, 2011

Lovely trip to Totnes, which in itself is a lovely old market town. The journey by steam is wonderful - the station along the way is all dressed up in period with advertising signs and old suitcases. A good museum at Buckfastleigh also.
The only downside is they don't really tell you just how far it is to walk into Totnes - it's NOT a short walk! We managed but anyone older or with a disability would have real problems. Perhaps they should consider a mini bus to the centre of town. I'm sure it would be welcome!
