Recommended length of visit: 1-2 hours
Owner description: We are a small, friendly and very different visit for all the family. Run by a small dedicated team we aim to make your visit educational and fun. You can enjoy and learn about our tropical butterflies in the specially designed habitat of which you become part. You not only see the butterflies but feel the rainforest atmosphere that they enjoy as you see their amazing life cycle unfold. In the Otter Sanctuary there are three species of otter to see, our native British otter, the playful Asian short clawed otters and the large North American river otters who love to show off. Our keeper is on hand to explain all about the otters to visitors, some are here for breeding, some for retirement, some just for fun and some because they are unsuitable to be returned to the wild.Make sure to bring your camera.

I popped in here after a trip on the railway and really didn't expect to stay so long. It's very relaxing in both the Butterfly area and Otter area, and time just flys by.

I guess how long you stay entirely depends upon your love of wildlife and how long you want to relax there for. You can walk around very quickly, but if you're not stopping to watch the wildlife, then what's the point.

I would recommend hanging around or coming back for one of the feeding times - the ticket allows you to come back again during the day (which is pretty good for £8.50). Tim goes pen to pen and gives a talk about the otters, allowing you to see some of the ones that may not have been viewable before. You can definitely see how much he cares about them.

Really cannot rate this high enough, we had such a good time! Tim was so knowledgeable and clearly cares so much.

We fed so many otters, mostly by hand. We couldn’t stop smiling the whole day! One of our favourite moments was when an otter drank from the stream of water from a hose we were using to clean up the pool.

The butterfly house was amazing too, we’ve never seen so many healthy looking butterflies in a house before.

We would definitely come back and do it again. We highly recommend this experience, you won’t regret it! It was good value for the amount of interaction you get with the otters.

I have a fascination with otters since I was a little girl so my partner booked this for me.

The otter experience is honestly amazing and shows you the kindness people still have in this world (Tim).
Tim runs the sanctuary for otters, single handed with help of volunteers. He covers most of the River Dart and his focus is on otters who need human intervention in order to live and have a better life. The goal is to release them back into the wild but when this is not possible they otters continue living the best life at the sanctuary. It relies on donations to keep running. This man is a legend. The way the otters respond to him and show him gratitude is incredible.

Thank you Tim, you made us smile all the way home and even shed a tear.

Please go and see the otters and donate what you can to a wonderful cause.

We booked our tickets with the steam railway and guessed that it would be quite small and we were right. But I must say there were lots of butterflys flying around and a few otters, we arrived at feeding time so this made the visit longer but all in all not bad for the price.

Combined our visit with a trip on the South Devon Railway, it's at Buckfastleigh station, loved the butterflies and visited the Otter sanctuary at feeding time, highly recommended, the talks given by the keeper whilst feeding the otters was fantastic, what a wonderful person this guy is, devoted his life to saving hurt and abandoned otters, thoroughly enjoyed our visit.
