The abbey is beautiful and serene. A perfect place to sit and contemplate while appreciating the beauty of the architecture.

Came to Buckfastleigh on the steam railway (fantastic), and didn't know what to expect. What a wonderful experience from start to finish. We made our way to the Grange restaurant and had lunch which was excellent. We then made our way into the Abbey church which was full of exquisite craftsmanship the equal of any medieval cathedral but it was when we read the story of how the whole place was built by a handful of monks who were self-taught that we realised the magnitude of the achievement. The atmosphere was serene and the history of the site fascinating to a historian like myself. The setting in a bowl of wooded hills with the sound of the River Dart rushing past is fantastic and the various gardens were lovely...we must return at a time to see them at their best but, to be honest, it is worth coming here anytime. A terrific day out, one of the best.

Thank you for your very kind review. We are so pleased that you found the whole experience to be wonderful. Next year we will have our Millennium Exhibition up and running and as an historian, you will no doubt find it of great interest.
We are pleased that you also enjoyed our neighbour's steam railway. Hopefully you will be able to return to Buckfast Abbey and as you say, enjoy our gardens at another time of the year.

On our recent visit to Devon we decided to look at Buckfast Abbey. A wonderful abbey well worth a visit. The staff were very helpful and there is a wonderful surprise at the back of the abbey. The only letdown was threat you could no longer walk down to the river. It appears safety issues are a concern.

Theres a dormant menace about the place. Won't be going back. The cafe was very modern but a bit grubby and very little choice of food. The soup had run out by 1.30pm and whats left looked a little unappetising. If you are close go to the Otter and Butterfly farm instead. A much better way to spend the day and a lot closer to God than this gatehouse of hades.

Thank you for your review. We are so sorry that you did not enjoy your visit and that you found there to be a dormant menace about the place. As a working monastery and a place of worship, it is of the utmost importance that we extend the Benedictine welcome to all of our visitors and it is extremely distressing to us to be described as a gatehouse of Hades. We do have a very large number of comments about the peace and tranquillity we offer. If you would like to contact me, we can discuss it further. We are very pleased however that you enjoyed our neighbours Otter and Butterfly Farm.

My family and I love coming here. Would have liked the shop to have been open in our recent trips as it ends the visit nicely.
