“A little gem which should not be missed”
Reviewed August 14, 2011

Spent a few days here together with Austrian friends and their 2 children. Rooms including family room were clean, quiet, comfortable and well appointed. The food, both breakfast and dinner were excellent. The cooked breakfast was delicious, well cooked and plentiful, and the children were able to have exactly what they wanted. Here again on the dinner menu the choice, including the specials, was varied and well cooked. The children loved the home made genuine fish fingers and chips, not the manufactured ones other establishments serve on the children's menu! I had the Seasonal Fish Pie which was to die for!

The staff from the owners down to the bar staff and waitresses were friendly, efficient and attentive. The atmosphere was relaxed and to listen to the River Dart flowing with the birds and sheep in the background when you awoke in the morning was so restful, can't wait to visit again.

Thank you and well done to everyone at The Abbey Inn.

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the river

We were here on the 29/7 and 30/7 for a friends wedding nearby and thought it was a very nicely run place. We stayed in the Dart Room which has great views of the river and a 4 poster bed! The room itself was clean, with a table and two chairs positioned in the bay window so you could watch the wildlife on the river. We saw a few Kingfishers darting up and down the river and waking up to the sound of the river was very relaxing indeed.

The room had lots of storage space with a wardrobe, table and 3 chests of drawers. The bathroom was clean, soap, shampoo and shower gel were provided. The shower cubicle was pretty compact but I didn't have a problem with it and I'm over 6 feet tall.

The breakfast was good, plenty of toast and a full English breakfast always sets the day up pretty well for me. Nice bacon and sausages too! The service was friendly and efficient.

The food in the evenings looked very tasty although we didn't have the time to eat there.

Pros:
Nice sized clean room with lovely views of the river.
Friendly and efficient service.
Good breakfast.

Cons:
Small shower cubicle.
The carper leading from the bar to the rooms was a bit threadbare (I'm being picky now!).

All in all a good, solid place to get a good nights sleep with a good breakfast to start the day. Lovely views of the river - it was a great place to sit and relax on the terrace looking over the River Dart with a good pint of ale.

I've stayed at the Abbey many times over the last 4 years and seen about 4 different managers. I was about to give it up until Andy and Hayley, took over about a year ago and have really done well making this a great place to stay in the area. The bedrooms all have a view over the lovely river Dart (the Inn has fishing rights so take you rod and if you catch something they'll cook it for you!) and the restaurant has a good menu with generous helpings good beers and wines to accompany it.
So ignore any comments more than 3 months old as they apply to either different managers or to the period (which actually was fine) when Andy and Hayley were settling in. Have a meal in the evening you'll be looked after by Maas who will do all she can to make sure you have avery relaxing time with good service.

This is the second time I have visited the Abbey Inn, both times I left feeling totally happy with my visit.
All the staff were very welcoming and more then happy to help in any way possible. The food is top draw, and served quickly... The rooms are very well set out, spotless and stylish.
As for the location!.. you really wont get a much better view... the river and floral arrangements make to pub.
Thank you, I will be visiting again soon.

Couldn't find any pub in the area that was serving food at 3 pm ?!? So we drove around until we found this lovely looking pub-motel. Athmosphere ok, crackling music in the backround, not many ppl in the place. Ordered some salmon dish and a kids fish menu, food was looking delicious although i would say that the kids portion was enormous and off putting. The salmon was plainly poached with no immediate excitement, veg on the other hand were brilliantly cooked to perfection. The waiter was pleasant, asked if we would like some sauces with our food but was quite taken aback after i enquired about some white sauce to go with the fish and came back appologetically saying that there's none. I tried my daughters' fish finger looking dish and surprize, surprize one of them had a long wavy hair wrapped around it in the batter. Not wanting to make a fuss over it i had the dish (i suppose that i had watched one too many reality tv shows with bad waiters and chefs ) examining it carefully while my daughter tucked in happily the sauted veg.
What i would like to say is that for a kids dish hygiene should be more than a must for a chef or kitchen worker and that although kids are tricky when it comes to food that meal was substandard on all acounts, greasy, unimaginative and far too big. And hey, ho when i pointed out the 'hair' piece at the end all i got was an 'oh dear' that's very bad and slapped with the bill

From peeling chrome on the bathroom room fittings, dusty surfaces and stained skirting boards in the room to poached grilled gammon steak and microwaved veg in the restaurant ,
Also being chased out of the room the following morning !!
All told not the relaxing pleasent experiance that reasearch had lead to believe to be possible.

Room Tip: Defiantly not Dipper Bedroom

The Abbey Inn proved to be an inspired stop during a tour of the South-West. Indeed we were so impressed an impromptu visit became a two night stay. The Abbey Inn is the type of pub that is sadly disappearing from the English landscape, wonderful home cooked food, an excellent choice of beers and a friendly welcoming atmosphere from both staff and locals. The added bonus of drifting off to sleep as the river Dart babbles by is the icing on the cake. Very reasonable rates gives the Abbey Inn the full 5 stars from us. Treat yourself to a visit.
