My favourite place to eat - all kinds of fabulous veg in the most delicious dishes. I was a bit dubious about the 'school dinner' serving style (8 people to a table, dishes delivered to table, serve yourselves...) but it worked really well, there was plenty for everyone and conversation was easy and interesting. Not for everyone, I can well imagine, but for anyone who likes to try something a little different and especially if you love veg and care about the quality of your food it's a must. In fact even people I know who aren't that keen on veg have been and loved it! Wish I lived closer! A little bit of a walk from the car park to the building, but elderly parents managed it ok - benches are a little hard to sit on for anyone with a bad back - take a cushion with you if in doubt. You will need to book in advance, it's one sitting and a popular place - don't take a chance and miss out!

Thanks for the kind review! You’ll be pleased to know we now have chairs instead of benches and if you visit again with elderly guests you are more than welcome park in the disabled area immediately at the back of the restaurant.

Tucked away down a country lane in beautiful Devon countryside, the Riverford Field Kitchen is worth the effort.

The fresh food from the farm is beautifully cooked and interesting. The salad starter and dressing, had some unusual but excellent flavours, the extensive selection of main course vegetables were great alongside the lovely, tender, lamb main course. The sticky toffee pudding was the best I have had. Great value and quality at £22.50 for a three course set lunch.

Recommended, but do book.

Really nice review, thank you! Yes, we cook our meal fresh for the amount of people that are coming that day – so booking in advance is great advice.

We had high expectations of visiting Riverford's kitchen and indeed it was a wonderful experience. They ask you to get there nice and early so that everyone is seated and served at the same time so it was a bit of a wait until any food appeared or anyone took our drink order. But you just have to take this in your stride and get into the whole idea of sharing with strangers too. It is an out-of-the-ordinary dining experience in a beautiful place which we enjoyed and would be very happy to repeat.

The food was very very good, as you would expect and featured dishes from Riverford's brilliant recipe books. However, I cannot give it full marks because we objected to the way they put families with kids all on the same table at the far end of the restaurant. The problem was that the four little boys on our table, including mine, only wanted to eat the chicken and turned their nose up at the veg dishes, as yummy as they were (apart from a couple of the roast potatoes). Consequently the one meat component of the meal, the delicious little spatchcook chicken with beans and salsa verde, which was to be shared between eight people, was demolished by the boys in no time leaving none for the adults. There simply wasn't enough to go round and I suggest that if they insist on putting all the kids together then make sure there is some food that they can eat as the veg dishes were simply too rich for them. There was also a box of toys directly behind our table which lured some of the children away from the table almost straight away, playing on the floor directly behind my husband's seat so that he was hemmed in. We wanted to ask the waiting staff to move the box but this would have been heard by the other family on our table and caused awkwardness (as it was their children). So a little more consideration towards families would be much appreciated.

Great place to go with a crowd and children. We go 3 or 4 times a year. Wonderful meat and unusual veggie recipes. You sit on large tables with other people and is great fun. Puds are delicious, but they only let you chose one. Staff very friendly. No menu everyone has the same. Homemade bread. You can see everything being prepared. Toys for children to play with. Fun place to go with great quality food.

Great feedback, thanks! Yes, like most restaurants, it’s just one choice of pudding per person I’m afraid. Tough I know as the puddings are so good, but hopefully it’s a nice decision to make!
