We have visited The Cromwell on several occasions and have previously awarded a well deserved 4/5 for food and we're proud to show off our local to our mates. We called in for food the other evening with some friends and noticed the blackboard outside that currently reads "new look, new menu, new Chef" or something similar, as The Inn has had an external make over and looks smart. "Great" we thought.... However we were disappointed as it just wasn't as good.

The staff seemed a bit grumpy and tired and got our drinks order wrong. The menus are now on paper and you have to queue up at the bar to order food. Despite the bar staff keying our order into the computer it arrived incomplete (server did apologise lots and put it right straightaway). Our food was OK and reasonably priced but didn't seem as creative or as tasty as our previous visits, the veg for example was slightly under cooked.

We didn't stay for desert as we forgot it wasn't table service and then didn't want to queue up at the bar again. The desert menu also didn't look as good as we remembered. (Opportunity missed here!).

Hopefully these are just teething problems of the new team as we will be sorry if we have to choose an alterative eatery to be our preferred local. Will give it another go soon in case this was an off day.

Thank you for you honest review. I am sorry that your visit wasn't up to your usual expectations. Yes, we have changed how orders are taken as it takes the pressure off our waiting staff and our menus are now printed on card, which until now no-one has ever had an opinion on. We have decided to do this as we are not a restaurant, we are an Inn near Dartmoor that serves good food. There are 4 and even 5 star pubs in Torbay whereby ordering at the bar is the norm and we feel this more appropriate to our establishment. Our policy is to ask our customers once they have received their food if everything is OK - that obviously didn't happen which I apologise for. The problem would have been rectified and I agree an opportunity was missed for you to have puddings. Regarding how tired our staff are, I can only say that your visit was during the summer holidays when it is one of our busiest times. We now have a seasonal specials and a much more varied menu, instead of the usual lasagne, ham egg and chips which you can have anywhere, which is proving to be very popular. We hope to see you again.

For pub grub, this is fine, although they do sometimes run out of pretty basic stuff, like steak.

Friendly enough, nothing to moan about, but pretty average.

Stayed two nights. The Inn has a very good car park and very pleasant gardens to the rear.
The inn is well appointed inside and very welcoming. Our room was well appointed and clean with good tea/coffee making facilities. the Break fast was quite substantial and more than enough to set us up for the day.
We were visiting as part of a party of eight in Devon for a larger reunion luncheon and therefore did not eat at the Inn,
However did see some of what was on offer in the dining room and the food looked very good and the menu wide and varied with specials to suit all tastes.
All of us agreed that we were very happy with the accomodation
provided and will no doubt be visiting again..

If you are going for a drink then the Cromwell is ok but my experience of the food is not good at all.

Went with a group of friends, one of which had a side salad that was full of grit. Ok not the end of the World but when pointed this out to the waitress when she came to collect the plates with the salad uneaten and the grit still eveident, her reaction was "Well nobody else has complained".

Not good, we won't be eating there again especially when there are numerous places near by that are excellent.

My very elderly friend and I decided to have a pub lunch here to celebrate my forthcoming birthday.
We were well received inside the pub and made very welcome. The service was excellent and the home - cooked food was delicious. It seemed very cosy , especially with the log burning fire.
We both enjoyed the day; will definitely be coming back. Thankyou.
