This is one of those rare "must do" experiences.

I am soooo not a morning person, but wouldn't have missed this for anything.

From start to finish this was a fabulous, engaging, interesting and fun event.

...and if you have older children / young adults who are interesting in a potential marine-related job, you absolutely MUST take them on this tour!

I only read about the tours a week or so before our arrival in Brixham and contacted them to book. Unfortunately they were fully booked for the Wednesday we would be in Brixham. Christine contacted me and put me on a waiting list and said she would contact me if space became available. True to her word I received a text telling me to check my email. We were very
lucky to get two spaces on the last tour of the season. As the cottage we were staying in was just across the road from the fish market, we could just walk across the road just as the tour was starting. We all donned our white coats, fetching blue hairnets and blue overshoes. We really stood out wouldn’t accidentally “bid” on a box of squid or cod etc. The temperature dropped as we entered the market, lots of ice with the fish keeping them fresh. So many different fish to see, even some trigger fish. Boxes and boxes of scallops, squid, cuttlefish, dog fish, the list goes on and on. Huge crabs, big scallops, enormous conger eels. Blue lobsters, colourful mackerel, red snappers, colours of the rainbow. The trawlers were lined up outside and the seagulls were feeding on the fish that were left in the ice that had been taken out of the hold. Such an interesting tour, well worth the money, most of which goes to the Fishermen’s Mission. As this was the last tour of the season there were some presentations made to the mission from the tours and some boat trips. The tour culminated in a breakfast at Rock Fish. My review will be coming soon for an evening meal at Rock Fish, in the meantime, the breakfast of scallop, cod, haddock, bacon, egg and toast was delicious. Book well in advance for the tour, starts at 6am, you won’t be sorry.

The tour was a gift and I visited on my own. It was something I would not have thought of but it was really excellent. The organisation was first class, the tour ran perfectly to time and was informative and was followed by a really delicious “fish based breakfast”. I cannot recommend this tour highly enough. The only down side is the hours these guys keep! 5.50am is a bit early for me but I’m fairly sure the market doesn’t wait for those who want a lie in! Well done to the organisers and to the M.D. of the Market, Barry. You are sending a great message.

If you are staying in Brixham and don't mind getting up early, this is a tour not to be missed. It starts at 6.00am as the auctions are getting underway. We were given overalls along with the shoe covers and fancy hats the TV people wear when they visit food places - all looked very fetching! The tour was informative an interesting to give us an idea of how this amazing place works and we saw lots and lots of fish - so many different species. This was followed by breakfast in the Rock Fish restaurant above the market, which was worth the cost of the tour alone - big thanks to Mitch Tonks and his team for supporting these tours, which are run by volunteers who want to celebrate the market and Brixham.

The Brixham Fish Market is the biggest in England and encompasses an organisation of many activities. The fish auction begins each day at 06.00 with Wholesale Fish Merchants vying for the best deals of the day. The tour is absolutely fascinating, beginning in the fish grading rooms and moving onto the actual auctions and outside to see the trawlers. We were taken around by the MD who's extensive knowledge of all aspects of activity was very impressive. There were plenty of opportunities to ask questions and take pictures. All followed by a slap up fish breakfast. Magnificent!!
