A wonderful flat beach with access to the dunes. Spectacular and exhilarating and the ideal way to start the day.

Miles and miles of sandy beach. It was winter and the beach was empty and the waves were amazing. It was bracing winds but would make you feel alive!

A visit can vary from a clamber on the rocks, a paddle in the sea, a stroll on the sand to a climb over the dunes but there is always something refreshingly different about each visit to Saunton beach. It is exceptionally pleasant when quiet but the weather and tide are always a feature.

Tip - catch the bus if possible rather than drive and park the high car park charges, or car-share. Avoid in high season as you will never get a parking space.

Saunton sands is a lovely sandy beach with life guards. The car parking is a tad expensive but still reasonable for a day out. Like most of north Devon it is a surf beach and rips can occur so head the warnings. There is a surf school, café, toilets and Sands restaurant. The restaurant is reasonably smart, not that expensive but the food is only average and the service is not always brilliant. Its in a great position though and its nice to sit out in the evening and watch the sun go down.
The beach stretches for at least a mile with sand dunes to the rear so even in the height of summer if you are prepared to walk a little you can find a quiet place to relax. The dune system forms part of the North Devon Biosphere reserve. This is a protected area and home to a variety of uncommon plant species and wildlife. Beware if you are wandering in the dunes as it is possible to become disorientated.
All in all its a good day out and even on a busy bank holiday weekend its possible to find a bit of peace and quiet.
