“Great Bistro Restaurant - top service and atmosphere”
Reviewed August 7, 2014

We went here as a part of 8 friends and had a great time, Emma the host is most welcoming and helpful and everyone had an excellent meal in a very relaxed atmosphere, top recommends are the Mackerel Starter and Fish Sampler which were excellent as were the Steaks! Well done and will be back soon! - Strongly recommend Reserving Table as probably 30 covers

“Exceptional welcome”
Reviewed August 7, 2014

We visited The Corner Bistro with three tired children under 6 in tow, so I was a little anxious about the reception we would receive. We couldn't have been made more welcome. The staff made a big effort to engage with the children and were incredibly accommodating. They even brought extra snacks to keep the kids entertained whilst we waited for food. The food on the children's menu was of a very high quality. My wife and I had steaks, which were of excellent quality and very well cooked.

It would be very easy for a restaurant in a good location in a popular holiday destination to let its standards slip because custom is pretty much guaranteed. I'm pleased that this is emphatically not the case with The Corner Bistro.

“Excellent food and service”

A fantastic menu, with plenty of choice of cleverly contrived ingredients from local suppliers matched up with an extensive wine list. The only thing that beat all that was the proper old school service. We're going back for breakfast!

“Excellent fish dish, very helpful staff”
Reviewed August 3, 2014

We ate here early on a rainy night in summer, the place empty when we arrived but full when we left. The ambiance is good, the menu choice fairly extensive, with a very good fish selection. We both chose the fish medley dish – 4 different fish simply grilled and served with a green salad, a lemon sauce and skinny chips, my husband did not wish to eat chips and was given a lovely tomato salad drizzled with basil oil (in reality he ate a few of my chips and I ate half of his tomato salad). The food was served on enormous round wooden boards. I loved the sea bass and mackerel best, my hubbie loved the hake and red mullet, all were very fresh and tasted superb. A decent-sized freshly-baked ciabatta and butter came out just before the fish and that went down very well.
Drinks – we decided to have glasses only, so 2 of Prosecco, two different white wines (one chenin blanc, one sauvignon blanc), and two dessert wines (we resisted the desire to eat desserts, even though we were tempted).
When the bill came, the drinks bill was almost more than the food: a first for us! Cost for dinner £75. Highly recommended.
Booking here is essential in the summer months, we saw the owner turn away many people that night who just turned up in hope.

“Wonderful people, wonderful food”
Reviewed August 1, 2014

Our only regret is that we only found the Corner Bistro on our fifth annual visit to Devon! About as close as you can get in appearance and style to a traditional French bistro, we first went as a group of 3 adults and we were greeted with warm courtesy by the owner and her waitress, but by the end of the meal we felt like we were regulars, we were so well-taken-care of! So much so that we booked for later in the week to take along our 4 early-mid teenagers, who were equally warmly welcomed and treated like adults. All the children loved their visit.

And what of the food? I wish I could win the lottery and employ Andy (I hope I heard his name correctly) to be my personal chef. A full selection of cuts fabulously cooked steaks with tiny fries - including 'proper' cuts of bavet and pave which were only served rare and properly so; a genuinely fresh fish platter, a 1/2lb burger to keep even the fussiest child or adult satisfied; melting velvety chicken liver pate with heavenly chutney and french toast; and the dish that anyone visiting should have for either starter or main course: the calamari. This is how calamari should be cooked wherever you eat it - the lightest salt and pepper batter with the tiniest hint of chili, so beautifully balanced that each ingredient came through individually; then the squid itself, cooked to perfection without a hint of chewiness to be found. Served with lemony mayo, fries and a hearty leaf salad, this is about as good as it gets in my book and the teenagers agreed after being coerced into trying it.

Wines were wonderful and delicious - the first time we went the Camel Valley sparkling wine was on order, but on our return without prompting our maitresse d' remembered we had asked and produced a bottle delivered that day. We also had a fantastic French Sancerre and an Argentinian Malbec over the course of our two visits and the spirits are kept by quality, not quantity.

Our lovely host explained that much of her business is from regular locals but also tourists who come back year after year. We will now count ourselves among those tourists who will be visiting again next year - and possibly even squeezing in a cheeky trip in half term to visit this fabulous restaurant and its wonderful people again. It's either that or just move to Braunton!
