We bought a two night KGB voucher during August holiday. When we arrived14.40 ( 20 mins before checkin) we was greeted by 'one of the owners' who was rude and abrupt. We was asked to go away for two hours as the room was not ready. We returned later to be taken by a lady to a room where the bed was not made, the carpet was still very damp from having to be cleaned, no tv and cobwebs on the windows. We was offered a complimentary bottle of wine which we declined. After asking to be upgraded to a room with a tv and a floor that wasn't wet, we were taken to a very spacious room with two double beds. Which at first inspection was very happy with. After being in the room for five minutes we noticed the cobwebs were still present, along with someone else's mascara on the pillow case. We then noticed this time we had a tv but no bathroom!!! We had to share a very outdated toilet with a shower (which was a tray and curtain) with other residents in the cottage (not the castle).
I decided not to bother re-complaining as we were going to be moved to the bridal suite as we could only stay in this room for one night. I did offer to pay to be upgraded and was told we would have have to pay £170, (using the other rooms as evidence) I thought this very expensive.
We did not understand why we wasn't put in a more updated room, as far as we could see there wasn't many people staying here. In the end we stayed one night and dared not risk a second!!!

We booked this venue for my wives 60th birthday and invited friends to join us for the Bank Holiday weekend. We wanted an informal event, where to a large extent we were left just to get on with things.
It worked well as we had the castle and the grounds to ourselves with access to all the facilities such as the tennis, hot tub, croquet, boules, etc that we took full advantage of. Informal tours of the castle and grounds were also organised for us that I know many of our friends enjoyed.
We arranged for meals to be prepared for us on the evenings just to make things easier and these were all good and went very smoothly.
Richard was on hand if we needed anything during the day and nothing was too much trouble for him and he quickly built up a good rapport with all our guests. He also manned the bar in the evenings and made sure everything went smoothly.
Sarah had suggested we try the clay pigeon shooting and we decided to include this on the Saturday morning of our stay. A group of about 15 decided to give it a go, many of whom had not tried this before. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves and commented on how good the instructor was, so we were glad we decided to include this.
All in all we were delighted on how the weekend went and it was everything my wife had hoped for. The location was ideal for what we had planned and everything we asked the venue to do for us went without a glitch so we were more than happy we decided on Bickleigh Castle for Anita's special weekend.

We stayed here on a KGB break in August. We had read some of the previous reviews and was slightly worried what we would find. But for what we paid, we were more than happy.
We stayed in Barn Cottage, we had a large room , which was bright and airy. Lots of coffee, tea etc. There was no one else on the top floor, so we had the bathroom to ourselves, so no problems there. Yes, it is a little tired and does need a coat of paint here and there, but overall its fine. We need to use the internet when we are away and we unable to do that most of our stay, so that was a problem for us. Continental breakfast was fine, expect maybe a little fresh fruit would have been nice. Lovely grounds in a very peacefull area.

We were on a KGB deal in July. We were there for 2nights. The location is great, very friendly staff. The room we had in the barn cottage was spacious and comfortable. The bed linen was clean and very cosy. There was ample supply of tea and coffee in the room. There were a few cobwebs in the corners and lamp stand. nother slight negative was dust. Other than that we were quite pleased with our visit and will visit again.

I had booked a two night break as a precursor to selection of a wedding venue. The castle sounds attractive both on the web and in a wedding mag and looked perfect for a small wedding. Thats as good as this gets. On arrival (we had advised we were looking to book a wedding) we were shown to a room that had cobwebs on the bedside lights, the window sills were filthly, I could write my name on the dust on the tv. My partner went to complain and we were moved. It was little better. Although the bathroom had been renovated there was a black hair in the shower tray. The headboard was badly stained as was the carpet. We were given a bottle of wine as compensation, believe me it didnt. Breakfast offering was tinned mixed fruit or tinned grapefruit no fresh fruit of any kind. Processed bread only. The tea was served in a teapot stained on the outside. The side plate had dead bugs as an offering. The english breakfast consisted of a limp and very uninspiring sausage, baked beans that looked as though they had been on the stove for hours and a couple of limp rashers of bacon. We had said that we would like to view the castle for the wedding. The cousin of the owner said he would meet us at 9.30 on Sat morning. We waited until 11am. We then left after trying and failing to book a hotel of a better standard for the Saturday night and made the journey home. Not staying in this hotel despite having paid for the room was preferable to spending another night there. This is a polite review of my thoughts!

Room Tip: dont even try. we saw about 4 rooms and they were all the same.

Bickleigh responds. We are sorry the reviewer found his visit less than satisfactory, and would dispute the remarks about anything being, I quote, 'filthy'; indeed our team takes pride in ensuring this is not the case. This has been an exceptionally busy season and some rooms are scheduled for redecorating very soon which is the inevitable consequence of large numbers of people passing through. We regret a breakdown of communication which precipitated the reviewer leaving early. We were exceptionally busy on the evening he arrived and it would not have been possible to give them a preview of the wedding venue rooms then; the following morning, where he claims nobody was around, in fact we were doing an official pre-booked wedding venue tour (which is the normal procedure) and both the owners' cousin and the wedding manager were here and would have certainly responded if only the reviewer had called into reception and pressed the bell which 99% of people do. The reviewers opinions do not reflect the general opinion of the vast majority of people who stay at Bickleigh Castle, many who have repeatedly stated they enjoy their stays and frequently return. We are a country venue, and it is not always easy to keep everything 100% free of marks all the time; most people allow for this. The owners' cousin was somewhat stung by the criticism of this reviewer because he takes considerable trouble with and pride in welcoming guests and attending to their needs.

Spent two nights at Bickleigh Castle, which is in a most beautiful setting next to the River Exe.
It's such a pretty place, lovely and peaceful, and an excellent venue to get away from it all.
Our room though was not great. The carpet was very dirty, and a thick layer of dust covered
the furniture. Although the bed and bedding were both comfortable and clean.
Wi-fi was not obtainable, and the TV reception was very poor, we were told this was due to the remote location.
The continental breakfast was fine, and all the staff were very accomodating.
If the cleaning issues were addressed, I would be very happy to return.

Room Tip: I would try to avoid Room 3 and 4, although I didn't see any of the other rooms.

We are sorry this reviewer found us lacking. We do dispute a' thick layer of dust' as our rooms are in constant use and are cleaned on a daily basis. In respect of the 'Wi-Fi', which we provide free of charge this was unfortunate. BT are a bit beyond our control as are the Broadcasting Authority whom deemed ineligible for Freeview. Thus we have had to install a satellite system and unfortunately this can be unpredictable under certain weather conditions. We do however have a lounge in which Sky is provided.

We had the most Perfect Wedding and stay. We woudn't change anything.

Owners Sarah and Rob welcomed us and our guests to their stunning Castle, and told us to treat it like home. Which we did and loved every minute of it.

We were looked after from check in to check out. Nothing was too much trouble. All our guests needs were catered for.

The guest rooms are all different and each have their own charm. Our favourite was obviously the Bridal Suite. It is gorgeous!

Thank you Sarah, Rob, Sharon, and all your fantastic staff for very happy memories and an amazing stay!!!
