Duke of Normandie Hotel
Ranked #5 of 19 Hotels in St Peter Port
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed July 16, 2014

The Duke is located right in downtown, some 200 yrds to the pedestrian zone and 3 minutes to the coastline. Very traditional atmosphere paired with an attentative service, quality food and generous rooms make this place a great deal on Guernsey. Wouldn't hesitate to book it again.

Looked lovely in photos,
Close to the town, but hidden away... Walkable from ferry...
Set in a courtyard, the room was very modern, luxurious, although quite dark, had to keep blinds drawn, as it's on a walkway !
We went in Feb half term, so apparently hotel not fully open, only bar meals....
Bar friendly, although very noisy at leaving time, got woken...........
Staff friendly, but did feel odd.......
Would we go again......
Not sure,
Guernsey closed on the Sunday.... So just walked along the coast road.....
On the up side.... Fabulous restraunts ....

My Name is William Brady, my sisters daughter (my niece) was getting married in Guernsey on the 20th of June , I have been to Guernsey many times before and was being accompanied by my 18 year old daughter, my sister recommended we stay at the Duke of Normandy hotel in the centre of the town . I contacted the hotel and spoke with the General Manager Alan he recommended that I should have a Superior room and my daughter a Cosy room which I booked.
On arrival in Guernsey airport the taxi driver new exactly where the hotel was and delivered us there in no time at all, the receptionist was very welcoming and directed us to our rooms, we were both impressed by the newly refurbished rooms that would compare to any of the London boutique ones , after quickly unpacking we walked a short distance into the high street, browsed the shops and down some narrow steps to the marina, had a quick look around but decided to return to the hotels sunny courtyard for a jug of pimms.
The following morning after a great nights sleep in a comfortable bed with crispy white sheets a shower like Niagara(my daughter said the shower hurt her head ha ha ) with soft fluffy towels and even a hair dryer in the draw, we then went down for breakfast in the dining room and was immediately greeted by the waiting staff, trying to decide from the extensive breakfast menu I settled for smoked haddock with poached eggs, first class, my daughter after visiting the buffet table chose the full English which really was full, the staff were very attentive asking if we needed anything and bringing extra tea and coffee as requested, a nice gesture was that the General Manager Aine Sillett came around the restaurant making sure all the guest had what they needed.
We has a fabulous time at the wedding meeting up with long lost relatives and friends ,I spent some real quality time with my daughter, big thank you to the hotel and staff for making it such a pleasurable trip and taking care of our every need.

Room Tip: Room looking onto the Courtyard

We booked this hotel on our travel agents advice based on their personal experience. They were not wrong. On the face of it its an average AA 3 star but its better than that. The location just out of the town centre was great and there was no excessive noise. Everything, it seems, was within a couple of hundred yards, the harbour, tour start points, shopping centre and boats to Sark and Herm. Loads of eating places available but we stuck with the hotel which the travel agent said was good. He was right. We had a courtyard room (no 51) which was a little on the small side but adequate. The big advantage of this room was that the courtyard window was not overlooked by people walking on the balcony. Most of the courtyard room windows were. The room was clean and well maintained. If you choose to do island trips we found Sark excellent (book it at the Sark boat office on the harbour. Some other operators charge extra and will add extra for a pick up when it takes only 10 mins at a slow walk to the departure point from the hotel. Herm is very basic but if you like walking and loads of nothing you should enjoy it. It takes about 3 hours at a gentle walk to get round the island but the east side is a bit rougher for walking than the west. We had a week on Gurnsey at this hotel. We will revisit the island (this was our first) and we will stay at this hotel. We are both reasonably active pensioners.

Room Tip: See text. We didnt look at any of the other rooms

There are good and bad points about this hotel, but overall it deserves a good rating.

Car Park - not many hotels have a car park in St Peter's' Port so this is a bonus. Unfortunately, there are only 12 spaces and there are many more rooms than that. Quite a few guests will not have taken a car with them but it is the luck of the draw if you did. Fortunately, we secured a space each day on our 4 night stay.

Location - Good. Just set back from the front on the hillside.

Facilities - On site pub & Restaurant. We did not get to frequent either due to our busy schedule. Breakfast though had good selection & was extremely prompt with service.

Staff - Very friendly at breakfast and on reception. A problem with our toilet seat was promptly addressed.

Rooms - We had a Superior Room and I can understand why people are disappointed over their size. Wardrobe space is underwhelming as a result and natural daylight is a problem. However, a quick look at the hotel website before booking would show the size limitations and give the choice about booking or not. Outside noise from the upper floor of the balcony was noticeable at times but is primarily down to the manners of people rather than the hotel design itself. The bed was very comfortable.

Room Tip: Rooms are small - accept that and you will be happy with everything else

My wife and I very much enjoyed our two week stay at the Duke of Normandie Hotel. By the time that we left we could see why it probably doesn't have a higher rating - because of its age and its city centre location it has its drawbacks. Only about 12 car parking spaces, no gardens (but a pleasant, if small 'beer garden') and no 'residents' lounge'. The staff were very friendly and helpful, and the food, both at breakfast and dinner was excellent. We sampled food on two occasions in the hotel's dining room, and also in the Admiral de Sauamarez Bar - again excellent. We were on a B&B basis, and enjoyed the opportunity of 'eating out' in town. The rooms, as others have mentioned, weren't overly large, but they were well furnished and comfortable, and the couple of minor housekeeping issues that were drawn to their attention were dealt with both promptly and efficiently.

Room Tip: Our room, in the annexe, was on the first floor. The only access was by way of a very funtional and...

Our room at the Duke of Normandie was very comfortable. Bed and pillows were of good quality. We had a tiny sea view from the bathroom. The only draw back was that we were on the third floor and there is no lift. Doors at each level made it quite an exhausting trip getting up to our room. Breakfast was very good. Staff were helpful. Location is excellent, but when we arrived off the ferry dragging suitcases, it was a bit difficult to find the hotel as it is tucked away up a side street and via a courtyard.

Room Tip: Keep to the lower floors if possible.
