“Beautifully stitched history”

The Guernsey Tapestry

Owner description: The Guernsey Tapestry is a fantastic way to understand the complex history of the islands. Ten panels (all stitched by locals to celebrate the Millenium) beautifully explain the events of each century. An easy to use and understand audio guide adds to the experience (available in English, French and German). A quote from the visitors book 'This was a wonderful way of telling history - I've never seen anything quite like it - don't miss it!'

“Beautifully stitched history”
Reviewed November 10, 2013

A beautiful hand-stitched record of the island's history - well worth a visit whether you are interested in needlework or not. The audio tour is informative and not too lengthy. Well worth the entrance fee.

“Perfect display and commentary”
Reviewed October 14, 2013

The tapestry is obviously the show piece in a delightful room. The amount of effort, (and no doubt vigorous discussion) which went into the concept, design and production of the ten panels each showing island heritage in one of ten centuries is both clever, interesting and surprising uncluttered.

Each panel is a delight to observe. It is all well worth a visit.

“Tapestry to enjoy and admire”
Reviewed October 10, 2013

The Tapestry is a remarkable achievement. It is rich in reference to Guernsey history and the manner of its composition is noteworthy.
It should be mentioned that the good folk of Alderney have also been busy on a continuation of the Bayeux Tapestry. Needlework seems to be flourishing in the islands

“a beautiful portal to a little understanding of Guernsey”
Reviewed October 6, 2013

This was a delightful surprise in that I didn't expect to be so wonderful! The story of the tapestry itself complements all the other history to be had here. It provides the visitor with succinct and interesting facts, century by century, which have helped forge this unique and exquisite isle. I would heartily reccommend it, in order to have a broader view of this island's history. The exquisite stitching (embroidery) is a marvel in itself. So to, is the idea that these panels are the culmination of visits to schools, old folks homes, other islands as well as numerous other locations. The gift shop boast lots of lovely options for souvenirs. Impressive at many levels and I would heartily recommend it. I particularly enjoyed the framed MBE certificate from "Jenny" (who masterminded the project) as it is displayed alongside the works and reflects the community spirit behind it.
