The Guernsey Tapestry

Owner description: The Guernsey Tapestry is a fantastic way to understand the complex history of the islands. Ten panels (all stitched by locals to celebrate the Millenium) beautifully explain the events of each century. An easy to use and understand audio guide adds to the experience (available in English, French and German). A quote from the visitors book 'This was a wonderful way of telling history - I've never seen anything quite like it - don't miss it!'

The 10 panels are in a darkened room and you are given an audio guide so you can work your way around each in turn and learn about the design, symbols etc. The stitchery is excellent and there are a lot of different parts of history covered on each panel. There is a small gift shop selling posters, postcards and some craft/sewing books.

we spent an hour here- listening to the history via a hand held recording device and then looking closely again at the stunning tapestry's- all 10
the history and labour /man hours put into these tapestry's was ammazing- although we had visited guernsey once before - we had not leant so much about the island until we visited the tapestry's- so enlightening and interesting- we would recommend this attraction 100%

A little tricky to find this place, but once there, it was a real delight! The tapestry is beautifully presented and lit, and you can sit in the middle of the exhibition and listen to the informative and not too detailed commentary - just the right length for each panel - delivered by Guernsey girl Sarah Montague. An hour well spent, and a warm welcome from the lady behind the counter. Highly recommended.

Although quite small, the museum gives a very good impression of life under occupation. There are many exhibits of German military artefacts, and how Guernsey people had to adapt. Well worth a visit.
