I always take friends or family visiting the island to Hauteville House. On a clear day the views are stunning and you are able to stroll around the well-kept gardens before or after your tour. The tours are available in French and English, but what I like most about them is that each tour guide does their own research for the tour, and so each one knows something a little different to the next. This brings a really personal touch to your tour, and it also means you can visit time and time again and learn something new!

The great activist, novelist, dramatist and poet Victor Hugo (1802–1885) fled France between 1851 and 1870 for Belgium and Guernsey. He settled on the island for 15 years with his family, living above St Peter Port in a four-storeyed mansion. His mistress came too, and parked down the road. (Our guide was frustratingly matter-of-fact about about this.) The décor of the house is mad – no surface unassailed by décor. Hugo didn’t travel light into exile and once there he improvised exuberantly, turning doors into tables and vice versa. The effect is a bit claustrophobic, the incarnation of a nesting impulse. Then up top all is clear and simple: this floor is Hugo’s actual rather than nominal bedroom and under the architectural influence of the prison cell. However, on a clear day, it has view of France, thus in this space, the man’s pain and the defences against it become understandable and poignant.
The museum staff were warm, playful and helpful, the guide uninspired, inhibited and inarticulate.

As a huge Les Mis fan I was keen to go and see the place which gave Victor Hugo his writing inspiration and I wasn't disappointed. The guide was extremely knowledgeable and was able to answer all questions thrown at her. Each room has a story to tell and each very different. The detail is incredible and there is something hidden in every corner which is symbolic. Although a little hard to locate the locals are friendly and keen to point you in the right direction. I would definitely recommend. Also there's discount for teachers!

Not at all what I expected! In a good way of course. We really enjoyed our visit to Hauteville House. A very steep climb to get there but well worth it.

Our guide was charming and very informative.

The rooms are all 'individual' and you never know what to expect from the next room. Without giving too much away - a must visit! I had absolutely no idea what I was going to see from room to room…

Do book in advance though. :-)
