“Our 25th wedding anniversary at Ilex Lodge”
Reviewed November 5, 2011

In April 2011 we spent a week at Ilex Lodge, a 25th wedding anniversary treat. And what a treat it was! The island is wonderful, reminded me of what Cornwall was like according to the stories dad told me when growing up. Loved Ilex Lodge. Will definitely return again.

At home I run a small holiday changeover business so I have a critical eye when it comes to housekeeping. I can honestly say that Ilex Lodge was spotless. May not be ultra modern but it is ultra clean. A joy to see & to stay in. Looking forward to our return trip someday.
Housekeeper really helpful & friendly, just what we needed with my health problems.

Loved Cobo Bay & the little (from the front) shop that sold everything from clothes to essentials.

Booked through Condor Ferries. Easy booking & great that rep called to check all was fine. Five star all round.

As people have stated, the complex is located towards the back of St. Peter Port.. The accommodation is clean and pleasant, with birds singing in the trees. It is located 10 minutes walk from the Beau Sejour leisure centre. The centre includes a theatre and you can catch some biggish names appearing there if you are lucky. The centre of St. Peter Port can be reached by walking through the leisure centre park and on through Candie Gardens. There is a very good cafe on the route located adjacent to the museum. The coffee is of a very high standard. Walking back from St. Peter Port is not advised, but a 1A or 2 bus will take you to the back entrance within 12 mins. The buses are a good way to get around, but the timetables do require careful study! The nearest supermarket is a largish Waitrose about 20 mins walk away, but don't expect UK opening hours. It does not open late and closes at 12.30pm on Saturday afternoons. There is another Waitrose in St. Peter Port (!A stops there too). It is imperative to get a copy of Perry's street guide (an A-Z) otherwise you stand a high chance of getting lost. Unless you are happy about passing other traffic by mounting the pavement (a Guernsey specifically), you would be best advised to only use the very cheap buses or sticking to the round the island road. All in all a pleasant place to stay and make sure you visit the wonderful island of Herm and book a trip to Sark too!

Self catering....Try not to be put off by the 1960's dated building (bit holiday campish)... its very clean, freshly decorated, modern bathroom & kitchen.
15 mins walk into St Peter Port, OK down, but Very hilly back up!
Small swimming pool, v clean. Would be pefect if only in a newer building.
Very helpful housekeeper on site.
Would use again
3 & half stars.

We stayed at Ilex lodge for 1 week in september and if we were to go to Guernsey again would definatly stay here. Location is about a 15 minute walk from St Peter Port, but this is very hilly, we weren't used to that coming from cambridge! The complex is made up of about 10 apartments over 2 floors. We choose a 1st floor room as we were concered about safety. We have 2 toddlers and the pool isn't fenced so we were worried about them being able to undo the doors and getting out. The owners were able to provide all the usual equipment for 2 toddlers - 2 cots, 2 highchairs and even 2 basic pushchairs! This was a major help for us. The kitchen had all the utensils you could possibly need. The only downside is that the supermarket is about 20 mins walk away. We didn't hire a car and the supermarkets don't offer online shopping so my husband did our big shop at the begining of the week and then got a taxi back. There was a little shop nearby but the choice was quite limited. Food on Guernsey is more expensive than the mainland, but wine is cheaper.
As I mentioned we didn't hire a car as we were told drivng would be difficult, which it is, and the buses were good, which they weren't! There are 6 routes but some only run a bus to certain points every couple of hours. On a sunday there are even less buses. We got a taxi around on this day but that is also a bit hit and miss as there are only a couple of taxi companies and many individual drivers. If the large company can't send a car you will just have to ring each and every other driver until you find one that is working and able to pick you up shortly. On one day a bus didn't turn up and when we stoped one going the other way we were told it was on diversion but there were no signs to tell us this. Also if you get a bus to the little chapel you will see what looks like a bus stop, with seats like a bus stop and a timetable like a bus stop. THIS IS NOT A BUS STOP! We were there with another couple as the bus flew past the end of the road. We then noticed in tiny print on the timetable a note saying the bus wouldn't stop there but on the main road!
I should mention the style of building of Ilex lodge, it is quite 1960s so doen't win any awards for its appearance. However it is well maintained and provides excellent good value self catering accomodation in a great location from which to explore the island.
