Waves Apart-Hotel
Reviewed August 14, 2009

My wife and I stayed at Waves in July. We both normally live in Guernsey but due to an extended stay in Canada had rented our home out there so decided to look for a holiday apartment for our two week trip home. I found Waves on the internet and having the benefit of local knowledge decided that this would be a great location for out stay.
The property has recently been totally renovated from the shell of an ageing hotel and presents itself as a chic, modern group of apartments of varying size. We stayed in Brequou on the second floor.
Good points: Great location, wonderful views from our 4 (yes 4) albeit small balconies. Beach views from one side and country views from the other. All had french windows so the apartment was very light and airy. Very well equipped kitchen with dishwasher, washing machine dryer and full cooker plus micro and fridge freezer. Satellite TV and flat screen TV. Very comfortable beds and pillows. Free Wifi.
Not so good: Our apartment was billed as sleeping 6. The format has 2 double beds in the very large bedroom and 2 sofa beds in the small living dining room. Only one small shower room. Luckily there were only the two of us, had there been any more it would have been very cramped and using the shower room/loo which was in the main bedroom would have been embarrassing to say the least ! The 2 black sofas in the living room were uncomfortable and made the room seem very cramped. Only one small wardrobe in the bedroom. With a little less furniture this would have been a wonderful 2 plus kids sleeper.
We were however shown a 3 bedroom apartment on the first floor which had 3 ensuite bedrooms, a large open plan living/kitchen/diner and a huge terrace facing the beach. Much better but more expensive.
Overall the concept is great and Hardrian and Jo are gracious and friendly hosts but my suggestion would be dont cram too many people in !!

Travelled to Guernsey for the first time and were keen to avoid old-fashioned B&B's as we have a love of "boutique" hotels/apartments. Having trawled the internet, Waves seemed to fit the bill, good looking website, though in hind-sight, lacking in pictures. As we were two adults, a baby and a dog, we needed a little space, so looking at the choices of rooms and the price (£140/night), we opted for one of the studio apartments. Realising that this was the smallest in the apart-hotel, we didn't have big expectations, however, when we arrived, we realised how small this place actually was - don't be fooled by the floor layout diagrams! We also broke one of our age old rules - never book somewhere without seeing pictures first! The weather was perfect, so it wasn't too much of an issue for us but I wouldn't like to have had this room had the weather been verging on inclement..

If you are booking a studio, it is small, with the bed completely overwhelming the room and access to the bed is on one side only. Finish is to a good standard but it is small....

On the positive side, the owners seem to be doing the right thing with the place and there approach to service was spot on. Location was perfect within a minutes walk from the beach.

On the down side, check to ensure all work is finished on the property. Whilst we were there, work was continuing and whilst builders were friendly, it was a slight annoyance.

There is a note to all hotel owners, not just Waves here: a massive opportunity exists through this credit crunch, re-balancing of currencies, etc. to grab a slice of the market that normally travels abroad without thinking about it. To gain access to that, competitiveness comes in here and I just don't feel that a break here, with flights or ferry compares to a good quality Villa/flights abroad, even with the Euro exchange rate. Would love to say different as I personally love holidaying in the UK.

I do wish the owners well with their venture but unfortunately for what the room was, the price of it was completely cost prohibitive, especially whist work was continuing on the property.
