SACO Jersey - Merlin House
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed September 19, 2010

Merlin House, is a modern apartment block on Pier Road, which is in very close proximity to the town centre and harbour. There is no parking on-site but there is a multi-storey car park about within 200m of the entrance (you will need to buy parking cards from one of the local stores).

Our apartment was a studio but still felt massive compared to the hotel room we had moved from. There was a well equipped kitchen with all the mod-cons such as microwave, dishwasher, washing machine etc. There was enough cutlery etc. to host four people. The apartment also featured a DVD player and modern flatscreen television. The bathroom was clean, spacious and had a powerful shower.

We were very comfortable in the apartment and found this to be a much better experience than a hotel. It was extremely convenient for getting into town and we enjoyed being able to cook at "home" when we'd had enough of eating out.

The only minor gripe was that wireless internet access was chargeable so we didn't bother with it. However, I would recommend Merlin House and will probably also look out for SACO apartments on future travels.

As it was my birthday my husband decided on an extended weekend away with granddaughter in St Helier. We chose Merlin House on line and from word go they delivered everything advertised. One double bedroom with pull down double bed in the lounge - absolutely perfect. Washing machine/dishwasher good crockery/glasses and other kitchen utensils. A quiet, serviced and safe self catering apartment. Would definitely return and would recommend to others. Very good value for money!

We decided to take the ferry to Jersey from the mainland, so to drive off the Condor and be at your lodgings within minutes of arriving at the port has to be a real advantage of these apartments. However, couple of things to be really mindful of. Mainly and most importantly for me, the apartments facing the road are the most noisy rooms I have ever had the displeasure to spend a sleepless night in. What a shame for somewhere initially so perfect. Get to the night time, and anyone wishing to enjoy a good night's rest will be bitterly disappointed. The windows even when closed completely seem to have no seal and inconsequential sound proofing, so late night revellers wending their way up and down the street provide a very unwelcome distraction from one important facet of winding down and holidaying; sleep. You can hear almost every word of conversation from passers by in the street below and since it's midway up a reasonably steep hill, powerless scooters have to rev ridiculously loudly to achieve any headway. I don't think the manager realised the irony of her own honest comment when she remarked that whenever she sleeps at Merlin House she doesn't rest well at all! I've slept in hotels located on the busiest streets of Europe and the sound proofing has been next to perfect, as modern rooms with double glazing should boast. This is a huge and exceptionally disatisfactory element of Merlin House. Massive thumbs down there I'm afraid. Also parking has to be in the nearby Pier Road multi storey. Not a huge problem, but it will cost you.
If sleep doesn't figure high on the agenda, then these apartments are good for their cleanliness and spec. Broadband is quite cheap (I'm currently writing this at 1 in the morning on my laptop unable to sleep again for a screaming drunkard in the street below). I think this is probably spot on for a couple who are enjoying the evening entertainment locally, but I've sadly not found this to be a relaxing family destination at all so far. Always ask for a rear facing bedroom, or book somewhere else I say.

All you could want in an apartment - Nothing left to chance - Central location within walking distance of the beach and centre of town - Manager (Sue) very helpful with any needs or wants. Apartment itself very clean and light. Helpful selection of leaflets and brochures in the foyer.

We stayed at the SACO apartments in St Helier, Jersey during the first week of July 2008. We chose the apartments as we wanted a central base to explore the island, and we weren't disappointed.

The apartments are not cheap - we paid £105 per night so it was over £700 for the week - subject to availability we could have hired a pretty cottage for this. However they are very well equipped and all fixtures and fittings were in excellent condition, and everything was spotlessly clean.

We had a one bed apartment which had a separate open plan lounge / kitchen area, plus bathroom (although no bath). Our only complaint would be the hard beds. They are ridiculously hard, to the extent that we even swapped into the pull down bed in the lounge for one night to see if it was any softer. It was a bit, but not much. I even contemplated sleeping on the sofa as I found the bed so uncomfortable. In the end I put a spare duvet on top of the matress to try and soften it a bit. But we still awoke every morning with a stiff back and shoulders.

The flat was very warm all the time and we kept a window open most days. There are ceiling fans which we also used. Although we stayed in July the weather was not great, so I would imagine they would be pretty hot in the heat.

The apartments are a bit noisy as although they are located on a side street it is a fairly busy road. Plus you get a fair amount of foot traffic walking home from the local pubs etc. so you do get a bit of shouting, especially on a Friday night. But after a while you do switch off and don't notice it. I think we noticed it more as we live in a fairly quiet area normally. I would imagine the flats to the rear of the building would be quieter as they do not overlook a road - maybe worth thinking about if you are irritated by noise.

We didn't get any noise from any of our neighbouring flats - I'm not even sure how many other people were staying there as we barely saw anyone the whole week.

The apartments are ideally located in St Helier. Only 2 mins walk to the nearest pub or supermarket, 5 mins to the main town with its shops, bars and restaurants, and within 10 mins of the bus station and beach.

We didn't have a car so I don't know what the parking was like. However we did hire bikes and there was a secure lock up shed to the rear of the building where we could keep the bikes overnight. The whole building feels very secure actually.

We booked the apartments direct with SACO which was an easy process. They were very helpful and answered any questions we had. On arrival Sue on reception was also very helpful.

The apartments were serviced twice during our stay and the bed linen, towels were changed.

I would recommend the SACO apartments.

Just returned from Jersey. Saco Apt's, Merlin House, was a great 1x bed apt. Plenty of space for our family consisting of 2x adults, 1x 3 yr old and 1x 1yr old. Spotlessly clean. Everything you needed was in the apt, even a packet of Persil tablets. It's situated in a very convenient place, 5 min walk to the bus station and 5-10 min walk to the sea/harbour.

Our apt faced the rear of the building so we had no pleasant view but of a public path/steps on rock which was a shame.

The pull down double bed was novel and very practical in the lounge but was far from comfortable. My husband did nothing but moan each morning at experiencing a terrible night's sleep as the mattress was so hard and bumpy. The quilt didn't seem to fit either. A bit too small for the size of the bed. The bedroom had 2x comfortable single beds with plenty of wardrobe and cupboard space. A cot was originally requested prior to booking but not available on our arrival. However, there was no problems and a cot was soon delivered to our room.

Bathroom was a great size with dble shower although it had no bath (which would have been a bit easier with our daughter's). There was a few cracked tiles also.

Overall, we had a very pleasnat 4x day stay in the Saco apt's. We wouldn't hesitate at recommending them. We will definately look up Saco apt's in the future as they have apt's all over.

The SACO Merlin apartments are located in Pier Street, St Helier about 100 metres from Jersey Museum, 200 metres from the bus station and tourist office and 300 metres from the main shopping centre. Entertainment and restaurants were within easy reach. There were two small supermarkets a few yards away

The apartments are well maintained and furnished with a high level of security. These are mainly apartments for visiting business people, but fare just as well for holidays.

There is a reception area staffed by the manager from Monday to Friday broadly 7-00am to 4-00pm and a mobile number and land line for out of hours emergencies. The main door is operated by a key code or a proximity tag on the key ring for the apartment - provided all occupiers co-operate, this should ensure that nobody of ill intent gets into the building.

Luggage can be left before 'check in' at 2-00pm and after 'check out' at 10-00am using the key code to access the building for delivery or collection.

We had room 206, a 1 bedroom apartment on the 2nd floor overlooking the street. The street was typical of a city centre with some noise from passers by until late evening and quite early in the morning. The apartment was sizeable with a well arranged lounge/dining room/kitchen, a large bedroom and well fitted shower room/toilet. The hall had fitted cupboards for extra storage and therein a small key-operated safe for valuables.

The lounge had a settee, coffee table and wide screen television with Channels 1 to 5, three Sky Sports channels and a film channel (Comedy at the time we were there) and Sky News. The main BBC radio channels were also available.

There was a full fold-down bed in a wardrobe sized cupboard in the lounge and a dining table and four chairs.

The kitchen area was fully fitted with modern hob and fan oven, kettle, toaster, moicrowave, firdge/freezer, washing machine and dishwasher. For our one week stay, there was washing up cloths and liquid, washing machine and dishwasher tablets but general cleaning materials were absent since the apartment was serviced three times during our stay with a full change of linen mid week and a dust, hoover and wipe over on each occasion.

The bedroom had a king size bed, bedside tables with lamps, a wardobe and a chest of drawers/vanity unit that would double as a desk. WiFi was available but had to be ordered and paid for as an extra. The bedroom had a small television, clock radio alarm and radio CD player - all the things you might expect at home.

That was in fact the sense of the apartment, that you had the things you would need for a lengthy stay as home from home.

The shower room had a good quality shower with a toilet and wash basin and heated towel rail. All linen, towels kitchen cloths etc were provided.

There is no car parking at the apartments though there is some one hour parking just outside. To park, use the 24 hour limit Pier Road Car park that is about 200 metres up the road. Jersey uses scratch cards for parking in many areas, this car park included. They are needed from 8-00am to 5-00 pm Monday to Saturday and cost about 52p each. When we parked the car in the evening, we 'scratched off' three cards with the 8-00am arrival time the next day in order to allow us until 11-00am to collect the car.

These apartments are not cheap, but used with the extra bed for a family of four, would be value for money. For those who like more space around them and a sense of home away from home, however, these are just the right thing and a well priced alternative to a room in a top end hotel.

In all our dealings with SACO, they were helpful and professional. We would readily recommend SACO and these apartments to anyone looking for well-located high quality accomodation.
