Spent a weekend break here. The hotel was OK but a good 10-15 minutes away from the centre. Our room was on the ground floor and was large and well equipped although the furnishings did seem a bit 'tired' Also, surprised , that there was no mini bar. Enjoyed using the swimming pool, jacuzzi and steam room which were open all day and perfect for relaxing after a long day sightseeing.
The best bit was the breakfast which was plentiful and with loads of choices.
The staff too were really nice and were very attentive.

We have just returned from this hotel celebrating my husbands birthday, and everything was lovely, room 408, location, staff. we could not fault anything. Staff were so very helpful, from booking resturants, to chatting to us about the island etc.
So I can't understand the comments on some of he reviews below. We really enjoyed our stay at the Monterey and would be happy to stay again and fully recommend to any one looking for a friendly hotel.

My husband and I stayed at the Monterey for two nights 6-8 Feb 09.

The hotel was booked through Airmiles, so we had a limited selection, after reading the reviews, we were a little apprehensive, but the Managers comments to the previous review were comforting, in that if there were any problems, management will sort them out.

The weather was very cold, but the hotel was warm and inviting, good heating in the room (too hot for my husband) and easily adjustable. We had room 316, which was on the corner of the hotel, there was some traffic noise, but as we live on a main road at home it wasn't a problem. There were two easy chairs with a coffee table, which you don't get in a lot of hotel rooms and end up sitting on the bed. Tea and coffee was available and a hairdryer. Although there was no ironing board and iron, there was an ironing room available on another floor. The large king size bed was very comfortable.

The room was very clean, with a flat screen television, stations were quite limited, but adequate. The shower was situated over the bath with a shower curtain (which looked new). The shower was very powerful with plenty of hot water.

We ate in the hotel both nights, as the weather was cold and wet, and we didn't feel like venturing out. There was a set three course menu for £16.75; the food was excellent, but a wider choice would have been welcome (due to the time of the year, I can understand the small choice of dishes and wonder if there would be an a la carte menu in the summer).

Breakfast was also very good, hot buffet and hot plates.

If I had to find any faults it would be:

Sheets and blankets instead of a duvet
A dripping tap at the basin (the cold tap was on the left at the sink, but on the right over the bath!)
Tea and coffee not served at the table for breakfast, but from help yourself flasks.

The staff were very friendly and welcoming, so I can't understand the comments on the review below. We really enjoyed our stay at the Monterey and would be happy to stay again.

Spent two nights at the Monteray Hotel on the 24th October 08 for my partners birthday as we have not been back to Jersey in many years. I was dissapointed with our room as it had terrrible thick white stains on the carpet, otherwise it was ok. The towels were changed every day but were very tatty. The one time we went for a sauna it was not working and we found the breakfast room so hot i felt sick, the breakfast ie bacon was very overcooked on both days. The staff were very surly at breakfast.
Overall we will not be returning. As our flights were not until 18.00 a noon checkout would have been better than 10am.

ManagerJersey, General Manager at Monterey Hotel, responded to this reviewResponded December 2, 2008

We are always pleased to respond to issues raised. It is unfortunate that none of these issues were mentioned by these valued clients whilst at the hotel. I do hope that the comments that follow will assure future clients of our professional approach to hospitality at the hotel.

These ladies were transferred from our sister Morvan hotels property, the sea front located Fort d’Auvergne Hotel. The move of hotel was owing to the Fort d’Auvergne Hotel closing early for the winter season; so we are aware that the town located Monterey was not their first choice of hotel.

Bedroom 312, occupied, is modern and recently refurbished and is clean and comfortable. All our standard bedrooms are well equipped with modern fitted bedroom brand name furniture from a respected manufacturer and all bathrooms are well appointed with thermostatically controlled showers fitted.

In respect of the bedroom carpet, there are rare occasions where bleach must be used within an hotel for reasons of hygiene and a few faint marks have been left on the bedroom carpet by the entrance to the bathroom. The bathroom has wood effect flooring. Carpets are regularly replaced within the hotel and the bedroom carpet is now being replaced.

Our bathroom towels are cleaned each day, unless requested otherwise by guests under our green programme as advertised within guest bedrooms. Some fraying does occur to towel edges due to wear and tear. Our stock of towels have now been fully reviewed as a result of this comment and any wear is only slight but all such towels have been replaced. By way of note the hotel has recently been granted an excellent hotel grading report from a Visit Britain appointed independent hotel inspector and has been comfortably graded at a 3 star level.

In respect of our staff, generally, the hotel does hold full Investor in People accreditation and the comments made in respect of the hospitality approach of some staff members will be discussed within this structured process for the benefit of all future guests. The mission statement in our family owned business is to seek to offer friendly hotels that are professionally run. I do believe that a friendly approach is largely achieved along with professional service. If some staff members fell short in respect of their friendly approach, then I can assure readers that this was not our intention.

Our breakfast room and breakfast buffet arrangements are very popular. Breakfast is served over a longer duration than in many hotels, from 8.00 am to 10.00 am. It is most rare to receive adverse comments and the comments are noted for future guest. Our steam room (within our indoor pool and gym complex) did have a fault during this weekend. By way of note, we do not have a sauna at the hotel. The fault was reported by management to the service agent and repairs actioned immediately, returning it to service after the weekend of their stay.

I trust that the above will assist our future clients to the hotel.

We stayed at the Monterey from 6th to the 13th September and had a lovely relaxing break. The hotel is clean and tidy and the staff are very friendly and helpful. The bedroom which we occupied was one of the "superior" rooms, and this too was clean and in good decorative order. The bed was comfortable and the bedding was in good order and in keeping with the decor. The en-suite facilities were fine, and fresh towels were provided on a daily basis.

The room did get rather hot, in spite of the heating being off, but this could be controlled by opening the window. For those who are light sleepers, a room on the St. Saviour's Road side may be a little too noisy, especially with the window being open. Fortunately we are not light sleepers so the traffic noise didn't bother us. The road is moderately busy, by town standards, and in the main traffic noise is acceptable. There are however the odd one or two "kids on twist n go's" who have rather loud exhausts, which can be irritating, but that is not the fault of the hotel.

The leisure facilities were used, and we found the indoor pool to be clean and well kept, as was the jacuzzi and steam room.

The breakfast was excellent, with a good selection of foods to suit almost all tastes.

All in all, we enjoyed it and we would return there if we holiday in Jersey in the future.

Up on arriving at this hotel for checking in we where told where our room was but no one was to take us to our room. We had paid for a superior room. But this did not look anything above ordinary. We did check latter that day if this was the room we had paid for. We where told that this was a superior room. On the next day we spoke to our rep who informed us that a s/room had a trouser press and that is what qualified it for the tittle. Other people in our briefing mentioned the room's and also NO entertainment at the hotel. I must say that the cleaning standard was good in all areas of the hotel. The provision for smokers was very poor. On some days trying to find who was running the bar around tea time was very hard. Upon contacting the reception desk the young lady could not have been more helpful and apologetic. But this happened on at least three occasions. We did not have hot water in our room during our stay. We reported this and it was checked out. We where told "run the tap for five minutes to let the hot water come" This only produced tepid water at any given time of the day. The meal selection was of poor standard but which ever meal you chose you where given the same vegatables. On one day three different types of potatoes where served with the meal. Breakfast was good but myself being disabled I found difficult to get from the buffet. Doing my own toast at a very poor machine was awkward, on one morning I had a slice of toast knocked from my plate by a young child. Overall I think for our needs the hotel was too far from town. The hotel exterior photograph is taken from a garden across the road giving the impression of A much bigger frontage. Anyone considering this hotel should check just what is available before booking A hotel which is actually in the parish of St Saviours and not St Heliers.

ManagerJersey, General Manager at Monterey Hotel, responded to this reviewResponded September 12, 2008

As General Manager I have run the Monterey Hotel for almost ten years. All our meals are freshly prepared and, apart from this reviewers dissatisfaction with regard to the temperature of the hot water to their hand basin, whilst I spoke to these clients on many occasions, I was genuinely unaware of their strong feelings until now. I am aware, however, that on a previous occasion they stayed in a hotel nearer to the town centre which served their requirements better in terms of location.

We always do our very best to meet the needs of our valued clients when these are known to us and we are pleased that this reviewer acknowledges, despite their review score, that cleaning standards were good in all areas of the hotel and that our receptionist could not have been more helpful.

We are pleased also that these clients felt that breakfast was good at the hotel. Any clients with reduced mobility are always offered assistance with service at breakfast. The buffet breakfast is, as indicated by this reviewer, well received by our clients.

Assistance was offered with these clients’ luggage on arrival. Superior bedrooms have a higher level of furnishings and fittings and are generally larger than standard bedrooms at the Monterey; Superior bedrooms are therefore not defined as stated in this review and are better than standard bedrooms. The hotel enjoys an excellent grading report from independent Visit Britain appointed hotel inspectors and is graded as 3 star throughout.

The Monterey Hotel does not advertise or offer guest evening entertainment and, in common with many hotels, general staff do, on occasion, cover both reception and the bar areas when necessary. In addition, dedicated bar staff are employed at all times that the hotel bar is open but they are, on occasion, attending to other guests, bar deliveries etc..

Hot water was present in the accommodation but was clearly not to a temperature of their liking. This is the only comment received of this nature and water temperature has been increased at the hotel in light of this comment.

Our head chef has been in post for ten years at the hotel. There are two fresh vegetables plus two different potato dishes provided on the menu each evening. Meals are prepared freshly each day and a varied selection of starters, main courses etc., are offered to guests. Local vegetables and fair trade goods are used where possible. On one occasion a turned roast potato was used, in addition to the above potato choice, as a garnish for a main course.

The Monterey Hotel is located within the main bowl of the town of St Helier and is within walking distance of the main shopping areas.

We have responded to the comments raised in an objective manner. We are sympathetic to any issues raised with us by our valued clients and trust that the above will help readers appreciate matters here from the hotel’s perspective in respect of this review.

After reading the reviews on Trip Advisor we decided to book this hotel for a last minute holiday. It is excellent and we enjoyed our stay. We had asked for a quiet room and were given a large room on the top floor at the back of the hotel. It was very comfortable and very clean and well serviced every day, although I did find the decor a little odd. ( As if someone had tried to co-ordinate colours and not quite making it! However this in no way detracted from us enjoying our stay) The buffet breakfast was excellent, with a good selection of food. The cooked food was of a very good quality and was always freshly cooked. My only niggle with the dining room was the closeness of the tables. Guests staying on a HB basis were allocated larger tables for the duration of their stay. Those on B&B were allocated randomly each morning and these tables were usualy smaller and very close together. When the hotel was busier on the Saturday and Sunday of our stay we were jostling elbows with the people on the next table! However, as the hotel was not so full, we were seated at larger tables for the rest of our stay and this is really more of an observation that a major critism. The Leisure Club was extremely well maintained and a pleasure to use. The indoor pool was lovely and very relaxing after a long days walking. We also used the jacuzzi and the sauna but not the exercise equipment! (too much like hard work) We cannot comment on the dinner menus as we chose to eat out each evening. The town centre of St Helier is about 15 minutes walk from the hotel. The Bistro Central (£££), Roseville Bistro (£££) and the Restaurante de la Poste (££) were excellent. The standard of service and food was excellent. At the other end of the scale an Italian chain restaurant Bella Italia (£) was very good as was an Indian Restaurant called Indian Ocean (££). We would not recommend the Atlantique Seafood Bar (£££). Apparently it moved to its current, larger premises in April of this year. We were asked if we had booked and on answering 'no' the waiter went off to consult with a colleague and we were then given a table. The standard of service was very poor with not enough waiting staff. We were not given the wine we had ordered. We were waiting for nearly an hour for our main courses only to discover that they had been given to another table! The mistake was rectified quickly and although my meal of Jersey Plaice was good the same could not be said of the 'huge' tapas selection which consisted mainly of fried potatoes. The final insult was to be charged £2.80 for a jug of tap water. We had noticed that a large number of tables had reserved signs on them although none of these tables were occupied during our two hour visit. We think this may have been done because of understaffing of both kitchen and waiting staff. However, the Grouville Oysters we had as a starter were delicious. The Atlantique really needs to get its act together to justify its higher than average prices. Overall we had a lovely week in Jersey - the weather was kind to us. We last visited Jersey 29 years ago and enjoyed it then, we were not disappointed this time.
