Description: This is the cooking that chef Sudu learned as a child. Armed with his mother's homemade spices (she sends them over every two to three weeks) Sudu set to work, introducing a slice of Sri Lanka, and the cuisine he loves, to foodies around the island. The authentic decor - a team effort, which both Sudu and his partner worked hard to create, sets the backdrop for his first big adventure - Unawatuna - an original name to represent the unique cuisine.

“Delicious experience”

Encouraged by the interesting Trip reviews we decided to try this central restaurant which has a lovely open seating area for a nice summer evening. The waiter (French) was very knowledgeable and we tried the 'taster' of 3 curries and had a side dish too. The portions were - as warned- very generous and the waiter had kindly discouraged us from having a starter which meant we were able to finish every last delicious mouthful. Combinations of interesting flavours but very light on the stomach and not at all oily. We shared a coconut ice cream to finish off but that was being a little greedy! Good value too.

“First rate”

Went on a busy Friday night and luckily got a table. Lovely selection of curries and nice to find something different. Generous portions too. Slightly let down by the slow service, the kitchen struggled to cope on a busy night. Recommended.

“Interesting and different”
Reviewed June 25, 2014

We had a lovely, relaxed evening at Unawatuna. We sat outside overlooking the square and enjoying wonderful curries, the prawn curry special was particularly superb. The staff were friendly, pleasant and efficient. I would strongly recommend it to anyone who likes spicy food without too much noise, hustle and bustle..

“Try something different..”
Reviewed June 24, 2014

In a prominent position overlooking Liberation Square, this Sri Lankan restaurant is different from the more traditional fare we found elsewhere in St Helier.
My long-term business partner is Sri Lankan so I had some idea of what to expect. I ordered the special of the day, a pork and pineapple curry, which was sublime. The sauce was spicy but not overpowering. Those of you like my wife who tend to the milder sauces should have no problem. My wife had the chicken curry, which she tells me was very nice indeed. Sri Lankan cooking is much healthier than some Indian cuisine, as they do not use ghee, or if they do, not to the extent that some Indians do.
The pub next door was very crowded, with punters eating the pub grub, and it's a shame that the more adventurous food offered here was not more popular, but hopefully it will become more so, as we will definitely be going back should we return to St Helier.
