“June in Jersey”
Reviewed July 7, 2013

Chose the Grand on the basis of Tripadvisor reviews and was not disappointed. Lots of great points, but a couple not quite so great hence the 4 stars.
Public area rooms are 5 star and the staff are very welcoming. The Terrace is lovely for an afternoon or early evening drink and is as others have said a real sun trap. Champagne Lounge also very nice for an early evening drink.
We had a room at the back of the hotel, which had obscured glass in the bedroom and bathroom, so although both were lovely, it is off putting not being able to see outside or have the ability to open the window .
The spa area is very nice, but the subdued lighting and lack of windows is not always what you want when it's sunny outside.
We ate in Tassillis the Michelin starred restaurant and really enjoyed it. It was well worth the lunch offer price. As others have said, we were not expecting hot buffet at breakfast, but it was possible to order fresh porridge, eggs, haddock etc, so not so bad and the staff are very attentive.
We would definitely go back, but would upgrade to a room with a view.

Room Tip: Pay for a room at the front or side of the hotel

The hotel is central to a plethora of shops but far enough away to relax. Service was excellent throughout the stay. Staff were attentive but not pushy. The room had a view over the harbour and the main road but you couldn't hear the traffic. Food in the restaurant was of a high standard. There was never a need to leave breakfast hungry. Evening meals were well prepared, tasty and served with care.
There were no real downside to the hotel but perhaps the bath sides could be modernised.

from the moment we walked up the slope and saw the outside terrace I knew this was going to be great.
every single member of staff we encountered were friendly and always smiling. My boyfriend had booked the hotel as a surprise for my birthday and the room we were appointed was lovely, apart from the view. The room was quite dark and all you saw from the window was the metal fire escape stairs and a multi-storey car park. But the hotel were great when we asked to be moved - offered an upgrade at much reduced rate and boy was it worth it!
Sea view suite was far better! More what I'd hoped for!
The terrace is such a great place to sit, have lunch, few drinks and watch the world go by, and such a sun trap!
Breakfast was disappointing for a 5 star hotel I did not expect a hot buffet self service but had hoped to have freshly cooked to order. There was however plenty of choice
The spa was amazing - having seen comments re the lighting and stairs, I guess this doesn't lend itself to being disabled friendly however it set the mood and ambience for a fantastic treatment. coming out totally chilled you don't want to have bright lights glaring!
We chose to eat in the hotel restaurant on the 2nd evening, we were advised that it would be in one of the function rooms due to a function being held in the main restaurant. Sadly the room lacked any sort of atmosphere, the music was too loud and we could hear all the people arriving for the function. The food was thankfully brilliant, great presentation and delicious.
The function was a school prom - our room was right over the top! Loud, very loud. But again the staff were great - very accommodating to our complaint. Everyone from the concierge to the cocktail bar staff were polite, friendly and always helpful.
I've been very "picky" on bits but on the whole our stay at Grand Jersey was fabulous, it is ideally situated for exploring Jersey. Using the local buses was easy and right outside the door! we look forward to returning.

Room Tip: Rooms at the back have awful views - opt for sea view or garden/park view

We met at The Grand on Friday evening to celebrate a friend's retirement. She wanted cocktails at The Grand. The weather was unfortunately dismal so The Terrace was not open for service. We were not really welcomed, more warned that the hotel was busy, but went into a fairly un-busy bar. It took 20 minutes for the first drinks to come - only 5 drinks and only one of those a cocktail. The tonic in my gin was the specialist one (that to me tastes like soda water) despite being very clear that I wanted just regular tonic. We then ordered a second round of drinks - and the waiter assured my friend that a Cosmopolitan was a long cocktail!!!!! The Bramble cocktail tasted like very dilute ribena and the order took another 15 minutes. The pina colada was definitely the best cocktail of all, but expensive.
The bar was not busy, obviously all the staff who were due to serve on the Terrace went home and whilst the service was polite it was not welcoming.
The cocktail list is also very disappointing with limited choice and mostly very strong cocktails.
I certainly wouldn't rush back or contemplate returning for a special event.
As a Champagne bar it lacked sparkle I'm afraid.

A truly 5 star hotel with excellent service. When we checked in we mentioned that we were there to celebrate our Ruby Wedding Anniversary and within a short space of time a personalised card and a bowl of fresh fruit was delivered to our room - very much appreciated. During our 5 day stay we could not fault anything. The staff were so polite and helpful and the food was excellent. Thank you for making our celebration so memorable. We hope to stay with you again.

Expected much more from 5 star hotel. Access to spa is down steep badly lit stairs. Once inside need to negotiate badly lit steps up to the pool from changing rooms, then back down again afterwards. I may be wrong, but I thought facilities had to comply with the disability discrimination act - I doubt whether these do! No warning on website or in brochure that swimming pool unsuitable for disabled and partially sighted. Lighting resembles emergency type due to power cut! There is a real danger of swimmers getting into difficulties and no one knowing until it is too late, it is just too dark to see properly. Requests for management to comment on this have been ignored. Victorias restaurant - this was so much NOT a 5 star experience. Breakfast - down market, poor selection of bread, stale pastries, only juice offered was orange, coffee from a vacuum jug, self service pre cooked items were cold and unappetising. Evening meal choices limited, completely lacking in fresh fruit and veg. No options of melon and fruit salad or fresh veg. Very disappointing eating experience - very far from 5 star standard.
I had tried to communicate with the manager but my latest email has been ignored so forced to put these comments on Trip Advisor to inform others how it really is - don't believe the hype - it's not 5 star.

Dear guest,

Thank you for your constructive feedback via Tripadvisor.

In response to your comments regarding the lighting in the spa, we are currently in the process of improving this.

Regarding your point about access to the spa facilities, we do in fact have an alternative route for disabled guests via our main reception and whilst we appreciate this isn't ideal, this has been designed taking into consideration the hotel is a historic building with various limitations in it's access. I can also assure you that the design, layout and access all comply with Jersey laws and regulations.

I hope this answers the points you raised but if I can help further then please do not hesitate to contact us.

Kind regards,

Eamonn

Booked as part of package, reviews seemed good so decided to try. Before we arrived they hotel was helpful in assisting with the booking of a spa treatment (which according to my wife was heavenly!).
The staff were superb and so helpful with everything from checking us in, assisting with car parking and advice on good activities as the weather was not great (had a 4yr old in tow).
the breakfast was great and the room very comfortable.
Would definitely stay there again! Thanks for a great stay
