“Visit Jersey, Stay here. Great front of house service. Lovely room. Polite staff. Go to the Castle by "Duck boat"!”
Reviewed August 11, 2012

What else is there to say?
Upon arrival we told our taxi driver where we were staying and he looked distraught.
I thought "Oh no, I've picked a lemon". How wrong I was.
He went on to explain that the hotel is superb and that the reason he was so distraught is because there was a fatal accident opposite our hotel and the road was closed.
That said, by the time we got to St Helier from Jersey airport ( a mere 15 mins max) the road was reopened as if nothing had happened.

We arrived, checked in, were met by lovely front of house staff and shown to our room on the ground floor.

The hotel is geographically perfect for exploring St Helier.
The food is superb.
The pool area is outdoors but nicely maintained.
The staff could not do enough for you.
When our room got a little stuffy because of the mega humidity at the time, I called the front of house staff and asked if there was anything they could do. 2 mins later a fan arrived and it was very welcome.

The Savoy truely is a gloal name with a similar reputation and this hotel does not dissapoint.

Jersey is a lovely island. It still has it's own £1 notes! Go see it before you regret it. Stay here.
We loved it and it was our wedding anniversary!

We stayed for one night and had a fantastic evening meal with first class service, we hugely enjoyed the drinks and expertise of the bar staff in the wonderfully ambient bar, Roberto's, and we had a comfortable and tranquil overnight stay. The breakfast experience was equally enjoyable. This was a return trip and everything matched our high expectations from our first stay.

We have just come back from 4 nights at the Savoy Hotel as an Anniversary holiday. The entrance, bar, lounge, restaurant and staff i couldn't find fault with. The gym was a room with abit of equipment but didn't fancy it, a bit of a second thought i think. My only real down fall was with our room, i agree with another guest that has written a review, we were over the kitchen and if it wasn't a delivery on the cobbles (brick flooring) that woke you up it was the noise of the cuttlery going into the draw he had room 31 and we had 38 worth while remembering. The other thing was lack of shelves in the bathroom, massive bathroom but we still had to put toilet bags on the floor, a lot of hotels are like this, who designs them? I would go back and i would recommend but small improvements could be made to make it 5/5

Room Tip: With a Fire station and Police station opposite, it might be hard to find a quiet room, but i can on...

I am surprised at some of the negative reviews for this hotel. As a couple with no children we chose the savoy for a 4 night summer break and were not disappointed.

The hotel was part of a package break allowing us to bring a car to the island, a car park was most useful.

The hotel was clean, nicely presented, attentive staff, good service, good food. As a fairly seasoned traveller this hotel was exactly what we needed for our short break.

5-10 minute walk into St Helier and a good base for the rest of the island.

Recommended.

My wife and i had a long weekend in jersey and stayed at the savoy the bedroom was very spacious and always kept clean and tidy by chamber maids, breakfast was always well stocked and kippers were a nice touch generally the food in hotel was excellent.
i found all the staff in hotel polite and courteous and everyone always had a smile which is not always the case in a lot of hotels these days.
Overall i would highly recommend this hotel to anyone visiting jersey and will have no hesitation in using this hotel on my next visit

We booked the Savoy relatively late (for us) and were pleased to get a reasonable rate. The first impressions were very good: the front of the hotel looked very smart and the lobby and reception areas too. It’s not very central to St. Helier and it’s about 10 minutes’ walk to Liberation Station. Bus routes 25 and 27 (eastern branch) pass outside the hotel. A definite plus-point is that the hotel is a short walk from some of the best-rated restaurants on Jersey (turn right out of the hotel and walk down to Kensington Place). The area is also very quiet, apart from the odd bout of sirens from the police and fire stations directly opposite the hotel, but these occurrences were rare. Overall we had a really good stay at the Savoy and highly recommend it!

Some finer details…

What we liked:
+ Having arrived on a morning flight, we arrived much earlier than the stated check in time, but the cheerful receptionist checked us in. She offered to show us to the room (no. 45). We made our own way there but appreciated the offer as it rarely happens these days.
+ The décor in the room was very modern (but if you looked closely you could see small signs of wear and tear).
+ The beds were comfortable and the room was well-appointed: tea/coffee-making facilities, safe, iron and ironing board and flat-screen TV.
+ The en suite bathroom looked like it had also been recently refurbished to a tasteful design.
+ There was free wi-fi but the signal was hit-and-miss. I could always connect successfully with my smartphone but we could never connect with the laptop. There was also a computer in the lobby for the use of guests.
+ The breakfast, included in the room rate, was very extensive and filling. We didn’t need lunch most days. There is a standard continental buffet and hot food made to order. The house English breakfast is gigantic, but the kitchen staff was happy to customise it for you. On one occasion, we tried the vegetarian breakfast, which was also excellent and just as filling.
+ The hotel’s staff, in general, was excellent and, overall, an asset to the hotel. Cheerful, helpful and personable. I would particularly like to mention Karolina and the other breakfast waiting staff (whose names sadly escape me) and the receptionists. However, there were some exceptions (see dislikes).
+ We visited the Montana restaurant on two occasions (I recommend you reserve a table). The standard of food was really high and you could get a three-course meal for £25, which was really good value. The wine selection was pretty decent too. One thing though, I think the chef’s idea of Eton Mess and mine differ and it was the only dish that was a bit of a disappointment.
+ The pool area was nice. The pool is solar-heated so it wasn’t immensely warm (it was much warmer than the sea though), but it was a really good way of cooling off after a day’s exploring. The pool towels were kept well stocked.
+ We got a newsletter printed by the hotel every day under the door, which was a really nice touch.
+ The toilets in the public areas were immaculate.
+ There was secure luggage storage for after we checked out.
+ We didn't use it but the hotel has a decent-sized car park which is free for residents.

What we disliked:
- The hotel building itself is very old and, as such, is not (very well) sound-proofed, as others have attested. The walls were paper-thin and we could very clearly hear snoring from adjoining rooms. On one night our neighbours had the TV on loudly so it was impossible to sleep. Thankfully reception called them and asked them to turn it down (all of which we could hear clearly through the wall).
- Our room was on the second floor (practically the roof) and was south-east facing, so it therefore became excessively warm during the day and remained so at night. The rooms are not air-conditioned (which I would expect of a 4-star hotel nowadays) so we had to sleep with the windows open. This added to the aforementioned noise pollution, as we could hear the music from the outside speakers from the bar and people in another room having rather loud sex (good for them!).
- The Montana restaurant was also very hot!
- Our big complaint about the bathroom was that the shower was very weak, which meant having to rinse hair under the bath tap just to get all the shampoo out.
- Some problems with the pool area: it was not in the best condition. I found four loose tiles on the bottom of the pool, which I fished out. We didn’t bother with the Jacuzzi as it was freezing (the pool itself was warmer) and had a lot of stones at the bottom. Additionally, we could not get a consistent answer on the pool closing times. The sign on the door to the pool area said “please try to avoid using the pool area after 10 pm”, the information booklet told us 8 pm and the receptionist told us 6 pm but wasn’t 100% sure. During the high season, the pool should at least be open until 8 pm!
- One thing that soured our second visit to the Montana restaurant was the attitude of the head waiter/sommelier, Andre. Frankly, he made us feel unwelcome as he never smiled and was quite abrupt with us. It really detracted from the atmosphere. The other waiting staff did not seem to be their usual cheerful selves around him either. This was uncharacteristic of the hotel’s staff in general. Coupled to this, I found the staff in Roberto’s Bar to be a bit aloof. They served every other table complimentary nibbles and ignored us. We had to ask for them.

Good to know before booking:
• If you like the look of their “Drive-Package” (where Avis car hire is included in the rate), do your homework! The hotel’s website states that this rate excludes “local fees, fuel, insurance and tax” and that “Avis terms and conditions apply”. There was no link provided to the Avis website for us to check exactly how much these fees would be. In the end, we had to phone Avis to find out what these were (they weren’t on the website). It turned out we would be better off just getting the B&B rate and hiring the car separately. Buyer beware. It just felt like a bit too much extra work to have to do just to book a hotel room and car. Also, the buses on Jersey are excellent so it’s not really worth having a car in my opinion.
• I don’t think the hotel really caters for children, as it has a very business-like feel and no real play areas for children. This is either a good or a bad thing, depending on your point of view.

In summary, yes, this hotel does have some shortcomings. We didn’t bother complaining about the noise, heat and water as we felt they wouldn’t be easily solved within our time there, and anyway, we were on holiday, so getting up early wasn’t so important; however, business people would not appreciate the noise and heat (after all, they’re not conducive to a good night’s sleep). However, we did have a really good stay and it was a nice place overall. I would certainly recommend it, particularly based on the staff. I’m also confident that many of the shortcomings can be relatively easily addressed in the near future.

Based on these points, we have some recommendations to the management:
• We appreciate that it would be a mammoth task to adequately sound-proof the rooms in this old building, but it might be an idea to leave a card on the beds reminding guests that it is an older building and kindly requesting that they try to keep noise to a minimum between, say, 11 pm and 7 am.
• The TVs should be programmed such that the volume can’t go above a certain level, as in other hotels. Maybe having the wall-mounted TVs should be reconsidered, as the sound travels through the wall very easily. We found we didn’t really need it any louder than ‘15’ (although we’ve no idea how this would have come across to our neighbours).
• If the rooms can’t be air-conditioned, at least provide a desk fan.
• The hotel should definitely invest in a more powerful water pump to improve the water pressure in the showers. Failing that, replace the shower heads with the type that sucks in air to improve the jet.
• Come to a consensus on the pool closing times and advertise them properly (and consider extending the opening hours).

Thank you for taking the time to write your review regarding your recent stay at The Savoy Jersey.

We are very pleased to learn that overall, you had an enjoyable stay with us.

I would like to mention that we are only around a 7-10 minute walk into the centre of town, which we consider to be very central for St Helier. There is also a bus stop across the road where you are able to catch a bus to Liberation Station should you wish to avoid the walk.

We are glad to hear that you found the hotel to be of a high standard.

We hope we will have the opportunity to welcome you back in the very near future when we shall endeavour to make your return stay as pleasant as the first.
