Pomme d'Or Hotel
Ranked #3 of 32 Hotels in St. Helier

The Pomme D'Or is not the greatest hotel. I am sure it was the very model of everything that was good about the 1970s, unfortunately it still retains that 1970s feel, but not in a retro-chic way.

On the plus side, the staff do everything they can within the confines of infrastructure that really needs a huge and fundamental refurbishment.

If you get a really good deal, it's no worse than most hotels on Jersey, but that is not a high bar.

I recently stayed at the Pomme D'Or while visiting Jersey on business. On my previous visit I'd stayed at the Grand but thought the Pomme D'Or looked nice, so this time I had a change.

On arrival the pleasant receptionist checked me in and directed me towards the slightly antiquated lift which took me to the fourth floor. The corridors look a little tired but there was decorating work going on in some of the rooms along the corridor, so maybe this is being addressed.

My room was pleasant with a large, comfortable double bed, a huge television which for some reason had all of its menus in German and I couldn't change this (one night it also popped up a message all in German with a countdown and an OK button. I had no idea what to do so I sat and waited and when the countdown reached zero the TV switched itself off!), and a nice bathroom. Inside the wardrobe there was an ironing board and an iron, and attached to the side was a trouser press. It was all very nicely appointed, plus there was free wifi internet access which was great. Such a shame then when I opened the curtains and found myself looking out across a corrugated roof (see photo). Below my window was also a noisy side street which had lots of passing traffic, and a snooker / pool hall and a couple of bars which had noisy drunks outside in the evening and into the night.

I didn't eat in the restaurant in the evening but breakfast was reasonable, a selection of breads, cereals and cooked food, plus waiting staff would bring tea, coffee and toast. I was a little disappointed with the toast - each time I asked for some I received four tiny triangles of sliced bread in a metal rack, essentially two small slices of cheap bread. Disappointing! I've been to cheap chain hotels where they've had bloomer bread, bagels, granary bread all available for toasting so for somewhere like this to go for the cheap option was a let-down.

The hotel is in a good central location handy for the town centre and the marina area, and is also just across the road from the Liberation Station bus station if you wish to see the island. Sadly as I was on business I didn't have the opportunity to travel around. The hotel also has no leisure facilities of its own, but its sister hotel (a 10-minute walk away apparently) has a pool and a gym. I was a little surprised there was no complimentary transport.

Would I stay again? Yes, although I did prefer the Grand because it was nicer throughout, had a gym, and the breakfast was superb. The Pomme D'Or was still nice for the few days I was in Jersey though.

Room Tip: Perhaps ask for one at the front of the hotel if you don't want to look at a corrugated roof and...

We booked the hotel for a one night’s stay, which can only be described as “Fantastic”.

Every member of staff we came into contact with had a real “can do attitude”, very knowledgeable about the area which they took time to explain, in an informative, friendly and professional manor.

The room which was on the fifth floor, and overlooking the square was spotless, and had the little touches that are missing from so many hotels these days.

The service and quality of food at breakfast was exceptional!

Would we stay again? Definitely!

I would like to take the opportunity of thanking the team at the hotel for providing the two of us with a “Great Break Away”!

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the front of the hotel, well worth the extra it may cost!

Stayed for two nights in a Standard double. Room was adequate in size and had plenty of storage; liked the extra 'dressing table and mirror' in alcove. Restaurant pleasant with good views of the harbour. Breakfast was only adequate, slow with tea and toast.
Best thing about this hotel is the location for those who want to be in the centre of everything such as shops (5 mins), cinema (7 mins) swimming complex (7 mins) ferry (14 mins walk). However, if you are looking for a Summer Seaside holiday then St. Brelade's Bay Hotel is far superior

Stayed 3 nights & would thoroughly recommend for a short break. Friendly &helpful staff, room comfortable & everything provided. No noise from nearby clubs or function downstairs. Breakfast generous, well served & freshly cooked with huge choice. Location is impossible to beat as close to everywhere but still got lovely views.

We stayed here in February and it was perfect for us. A 30 minute bus ride from the airport, the hotel is right outside the bus station where the bus terminates and seems very central. Very welcoming reception staff, good size family rooms, clean and quiet. We had breakfast in the Harbour Room which was beautiful. Excellent selection of well cooked food, fruit and cereal. I wish we'd had an extra night to have dinner here. Booking early ensured a very reasonable price too!
