“A good weekend break”
Reviewed April 16, 2013

A really confortable hotel for a couple. The hotel staff were kind and attentive, they really wanted you to have a comfortable stay. Room was medium in size but with a great view and had everything you need for a short break. Only small comment about the room is that they need to seal the gaps around the door to block out light from the corridor. The restaurant has a wonderful view over the bay. We ate both breakfast and dinner in the restaurant and could not fault the food. We shall hopefully return!

Room Tip: you must book a sea view room

Many thanks for your comments regarding your stay with us I was delighted to read that it was an enjoyable one for you. I note and thank you for your oservation about the seal required around your bedroom door and perhaps you would be kind enough to contact me directly to confirm the room that you were in so that we can take appropriate action via our maintenance department. I look forward to hearing from you and welcoming you back to the Somerville. Kind regards David Plowright

My Wife, 2 friends and I stayed for 3 nights in April. This is our 3rd visit to the Somerville (2009, 2012 and now 2013) and each time has been excellent! If you love amazing views and great food, then this is the place! The staff here are exceptional - very friendly and helpful and have been on each of our visits in the past. Especially Neel and Moody, who, as always, made our stay that little bit more fun! The Tides Restaurant at the Somerville, which has brilliant views over St. Aubin harbour, is very good. It has a menu that changes daily and has to be one of the best value menus I think I have ever seen. They also had an offer on where by if you had 4 for dinner / lunch, you only paid for 3! So, even if you're not staying there, well worth popping in to eat! We will definitely be staying here again, hopefully for many years to come!

Room Tip: Well worth paying the little bit extra for a sea view room!

We arrived at their rush hour when the locals were having Sunday lunch and all the new visitors came off the same ferry . The Somerville coped with this by having an impeccably dressed employee managing the situation and even triple parking where necessary and going up to new arrivals with a form to avoid delays.
The view from our room was as good as any in the south of France , not their largest but comfortable . We decided to sample new eating venues but in spite of Jersey's tourist claims St Helier was definitely not bustling and vibrant on an early Sunday evening ( pubs and restaurants either closed or not cooking that night ) so do not expect to eat out on that day. The Somerville made up for it though when we had dinner there next day, the choice ,cooking and presentation was very good. Add to this a great breakfast with harbour views ( get down early ) and you can see how they have such good reviews.
Some tips on driving in Jersey - Stick to the 40mph limit , " tomtoms" do not work on postcodes ( we just put the town in and then street and it worked fine )so on a maze of narrow roads you need a sat/nav, local drivers are usually patient and user-friendly , for town parking there is a scratch-card system ( only one multi-storey with a cash payment machine ) that seems to be much dis-liked . You need to drive around with enough cards to park in town areas before 1700.I used them once only at the Maritime Museum. My impression of Jersey that it was affluent, with no litter and boarded-up shops and properties we have on the mainland.
Also be prepared to drive on very narrow roads , slowly !
Condor Ferries that we travelled on was noisy and had an invalid chairlift out of use,no tannoy on the port (left)side (what would happen in an emergency) only two power points for lap-tops etc.,and another day trip traveller was delayed by engine difficulties on a different crossing.
These are general views and do not detract from the Somerville in any way . As the title says they deserve the good reviews.

Room Tip: Travelzoo deals give you a sea-view upgrade

Many thanks for taking the time to provide your very kind comments and useful information to future visitors to the island. I'm delighted that you were well looked after despite the high numbers that we would have been catering for at a Sunday Lunch time, this is a very popular event for locals here at the Somerville but residents are of coarse very welcome as well. For other future visitors please do be careful of the speed limit, there are actually very few areas that allow 40mph and the main speed limit on the island is 30mph but even 20mph or less in other areas. Sat. navs. can be limited but we always have maps at reception and are happy to provide directions at the desk where possible. As you correctly state it is well worth preparing yourself for the various car parking procedures if using cars on the island. Many thanks once again for your very kind comments which I will of course sghare with the team. We look forward to welcoming you to the hotel again soon.Kind regards David Plowright

My wife and I love Jersey and we visit up to 5 times a year, sometimes with our family. We have heard many positive things about this Hotel and with its imposing location, it looks fantastic. So, what better than to go there to have a look?As we walked in the entrance we were immediately impressed. We asked for a brochure and talked to two of the staff about staying there. Imagine our disappointment when we were told "No, we don't really cater for, or encourage children at our hotel". We have since talked to many more people including other Somerville staff and have heard the same message from everyone.
A great Hotel no doubt, but not one that I would call a Family Hotel.

Many thanks for your comments we do indeed have a wonderful position here at the Somerville with stunning views over the bay. I can really only agree with your comments. Whilst children do stay at the hotel and when they do so they are very welcome and very well looked after we are mainly a hotel that caters for couples who wish to enjoy a peaceful break / holiday or a business client wanting a restful place to stay after a busy day. Being part of the Dolan Hotel Group we do tend to find that families stay at out sister hotel - The Golden Sands which has a wonderful beach side location in St Brelades Bay. I must say that I find the rating a bit harsh considering that firstly it would appear that you didn't stayed with us and secondly that we do not promote ourselves as being a family hotel but thanks you for your observations anyway. Kind regards David Plowright.

We stayed here for five nights in a Superior Garden Sea View room and had a brilliant stay.

The staff were fantastic - in particular Silvie - who went out of her way to make sure we had a great stay. Joe was also really helpful.

The room was very comfortable and had fabulous views and facilities. It even had an iPod docking station which was a nice touch. We didn't use the pool as the weather wasn't right but the pool looked beautiful too.

The breakfast was really good. Hot food was cooked to order rather than being under heat lamps, which was a nice touch. You could also choose from several continental breakfast items including fruit, yoghurt, cheeses, meats/fish, cereals, pastries, toast and homemade preserves. We also had two evening meals in the hotel which were brilliant. It was easy to tell that the food was high quality and was cooked perfectly.

We often travel to Jersey and would definitely come back and reccomend this hotel to friends and family. We hope to be back in the future.

Many thanks for taking the time to share your experience and opinions with us. I was delighted to read that our new Garden Seaview Suites were well received. It is always good to receive positive comments regarding new projects that we have completed here at the Somerville. The 3 new garden sea view suites were completed last year and with their private terrace, garden and beautiful views they are proving to be very popular. I hope that we have the pleasure of welcoming you back to the hotel again soon. Kind regards David Plowright

My daughter spotted a deal offered through Travelzoo for a 3 night bed and breakfast break at this hotel and suggested we go for it; it seemed very good value. We weren't disappointed! The room and beds were comfortable, with all the little extras that make a stay even more so; the view was lovely; the quality and choice of food for breakfast was very good. As part of the deal we had a 'complimentary' 3 course meal from the Table D'hote Menu; there was a good selection of dishes to choose from for each course, with some 'little extras' served along the way, and the whole meal was of very high quality. The usual cost of this was about twice what we paid locally for a very good 2 course meal the following evening, but compared favourably in terms of value for money.
Last but not least, the staff were friendly and helpful, and contributed a lot to our enjoyment of a very welcome break!
(P.S. I wasn't sure how to categorise this trip; my daughter and I are family, of course, but it wasn't a family trip as such. I opted for 'friends' as I believe that we remain good friends after a very pleasant few days together!)

Room Tip: Ask for a sea view; a lot of the rooms overlook the harbour and you can see St Helier across the bay...

I left a phone charger and top there. They went out of their way to track them down and post them back to me, no charge. I was actually staying there because I was in Jersey for a funeral. But I wouldn't hesitate to recomend this place for its great position, lovely views, comfortable beds and very helpful staff.
