“Always a pleasure to return”
Reviewed July 11, 2014

My wife & I have stayed here a number of times over the past 10 years and have yet to be disappointed. The high standards set by the proprietors have not slipped, from the cleanliness of the rooms, the general fixtures & fittings, hands on service & the fabulous meals created from mostly locally sourced suppliers. The location is terrific (whilst not being spectacular) & all in all one of our favourite destinations. Not at all cheap but extremely good value.

Room Tip: Just ask when booking. We prefer the rooms where the Bed faces the windows at the front.

We stayed at Stella Maris a few years ago and had one of the loveliest times we've ever had on vacation! The hotel is an understated, elegant little gem, and the owners, Terry and Francis, an Irish and an American couple, are about the most friendly, helpful hosts you could hope to find anywhere.

We have returned to Ballycastle in this spectacularly beautiful part of Ireland several times, and dining at Stella Maris is the perfect end to each day. We live in a tourist resort area (in the Caribbean) part of the year and outside of NYC in a Connecticut town the rest of the year. We travel pretty widely, as well, so we are familiar with fine dining, and we consider Stella Maris right up there with the best restaurants anywhere. And the darling girls that serve at Stella Maris are a delight!

We will return again and again!

For many years now, we are coming to the Stella Maris restaurant for birthday dinners and when visitors from abroad arrive. In each and every case, the standard of food and service has been outstanding.
The location of the hotel - a renovated convent, hence the name - overlooking the sea towards Downpatrick Head is spectacular and breath-taking especially when the weather is somewhat stormy. However, there is a large cosy conservatory towards the front where you can watch without getting wet...
The relaxed and relaxing atmosphere created by proprietors Frances and Terry adds to an highly recommended unique experience in this remote part of Ireland at the north-western edge of Europe. Much of the food is sourced locally and of best quality, carefully and beautifully prepared and immaculately served.

This small inn is located in a renovated defensive coastal station which was built by the British army in the 19th century. The location on the water is very pretty and quiet, and the rooms are beautifully decorated and clean. The cooked-to-order breakfast was excellent, but the dinner was expensive and the food indifferent. Unfortunately, there are no other dining options nearby, and Ballyvaughn is a desperate little town with little to recommend it. Overall, this isn't the best option among Ireland's many excellent country hotels.

We stayed at the Stella Maris Country Inn near Ballycastle, Ireland and cannot express what a wonderful experience it was. The owners were very welcoming and made sure every part of our stay fully met our needs. The rooms are decorated in high quality antiques and the ensuite bath is fully updated and extremely comfortable. The view from the rooms overlooking the ocean is breathtaking. A highlight of our stay at Stella Maris was the food. The owner, Frances, is an outstanding gourmet cook and everything she served from the menu was superb. We highly recommend this inn for anyone visiting the NW area of Ireland. It truly was a highlight of our trip to Ireland! Tom and Linda, Missouri

I first found Stella Maris about ten years ago and was delighted with its location and the standard of comfort it provided. I am pleased to say that a recent return trip confirms that my original judgement was correct.

Our room was good - although not overly large for the price - and had a good view of the bay. As an added bonus we were entertained by a school of dolphins going through their repertoire of tricks in full view.. The conservatory is a lovely place in which to sit and so are the other sitting areas.

We were a little bit disappointed by the food although the alc menu is very fairly priced and so is the wine. Perhaps our experience of the dining room was a little bit jaundiced by the raucous behaviour of a group of eight American lady golfers who were enjoyed themselves very loudly indeed. Breakfast was average by Irish country house standards.

Frances Kelly and Terence Sweeney are a charming couple who have shown great resilinece and determination by keeping this charming hotel going through the recession when they, and others like them running small family owned hotels in Ireland, have faced hugely unfair competition from the State (NAMA) which has taken over a lot of large bankrupt hotels and are operating them at absurdly low prices.

Room Tip: I think all of the rooms have a sea view.

I totally agree with the previous reviewer, Richard B: Lovely views and stunning location but the service lacks refinement and the details which make the difference between very good and excellent. The Stella Maris is very good but far from excellent, especially as far as the food is concerned and I am puzzled about the reviewer thinking it is "fantastic"... Our experience during the 3 dinners and breakfast we took there was far from fantastic: same vegetables 3 nights in a row, monkfish (obviously coming out of the freezer) was dry and tasteless and lacking in any proper sauce, there was no fresh home-made bread at breakfast and the menu was seriously lacking in variety, etc... We have experienced stunning food in Ireland like (in Kenmare and in Renvyle especially) but Stella Maris is not in that category at all. Regarding the accomodation, the rooms are very well appointed and there is nothing to criticize there. However the long glass verandah could be more "classy" as there is a lot of "bric-a-brac" there but this is not very important in comparaison with the problem of the absence of reading lights at night on the small tables placed around the place while the ceiling lights are dimmed (as they should be) : really I would think having reading lights doted around the place is a must: What is the use of having such a lovely long conservatory if you cant relax there at night with a book and a night cap.... I also think that books and magazine are a must ... Not everybody is interested in golf ! As a lot of foreigners come to Stella Maris, there should be a small library of books on Ireland, its history, its culture, the impact of the famine etc ... People come to the hotel for its quiet location and it is the ideal opportunity to read .... and not only about golf!!!! To finish on a positive note, I would like to add that the welcome you receive, more especially from the lady of the house, is excellent: she takes time to talk to you and goes out of her way to make you feel at home: a real bonus and a real Irish experience. LLD
