“Superb location and friendly owners”
Reviewed September 16, 2013

I first found Stella Maris about ten years ago and was delighted with its location and the standard of comfort it provided. I am pleased to say that a recent return trip confirms that my original judgement was correct.

Our room was good - although not overly large for the price - and had a good view of the bay. As an added bonus we were entertained by a school of dolphins going through their repertoire of tricks in full view.. The conservatory is a lovely place in which to sit and so are the other sitting areas.

We were a little bit disappointed by the food although the alc menu is very fairly priced and so is the wine. Perhaps our experience of the dining room was a little bit jaundiced by the raucous behaviour of a group of eight American lady golfers who were enjoyed themselves very loudly indeed. Breakfast was average by Irish country house standards.

Frances Kelly and Terence Sweeney are a charming couple who have shown great resilinece and determination by keeping this charming hotel going through the recession when they, and others like them running small family owned hotels in Ireland, have faced hugely unfair competition from the State (NAMA) which has taken over a lot of large bankrupt hotels and are operating them at absurdly low prices.

Room Tip: I think all of the rooms have a sea view.

I totally agree with the previous reviewer, Richard B: Lovely views and stunning location but the service lacks refinement and the details which make the difference between very good and excellent. The Stella Maris is very good but far from excellent, especially as far as the food is concerned and I am puzzled about the reviewer thinking it is "fantastic"... Our experience during the 3 dinners and breakfast we took there was far from fantastic: same vegetables 3 nights in a row, monkfish (obviously coming out of the freezer) was dry and tasteless and lacking in any proper sauce, there was no fresh home-made bread at breakfast and the menu was seriously lacking in variety, etc... We have experienced stunning food in Ireland like (in Kenmare and in Renvyle especially) but Stella Maris is not in that category at all. Regarding the accomodation, the rooms are very well appointed and there is nothing to criticize there. However the long glass verandah could be more "classy" as there is a lot of "bric-a-brac" there but this is not very important in comparaison with the problem of the absence of reading lights at night on the small tables placed around the place while the ceiling lights are dimmed (as they should be) : really I would think having reading lights doted around the place is a must: What is the use of having such a lovely long conservatory if you cant relax there at night with a book and a night cap.... I also think that books and magazine are a must ... Not everybody is interested in golf ! As a lot of foreigners come to Stella Maris, there should be a small library of books on Ireland, its history, its culture, the impact of the famine etc ... People come to the hotel for its quiet location and it is the ideal opportunity to read .... and not only about golf!!!! To finish on a positive note, I would like to add that the welcome you receive, more especially from the lady of the house, is excellent: she takes time to talk to you and goes out of her way to make you feel at home: a real bonus and a real Irish experience. LLD

Stayed here for 2 nights in Sep 2013. This hotel was chosen precisely because it is truly off the beaten track, while still offering the comfort and luxury of a 4* hotel. Its a great choice if you want to relax, and stay out from lots of people and noise.

There are less than 10 guest rooms in this hotel; hence, you know for sure that the place will never get too noisy. There is a large and cosy conservatory, where one can spend lots of time reading, or just enjoying the sea view.

Breakfast was really delicious - although you get the options of the full Irish, the quality is far superior to those you get at typical large hotels. It is worthwhile going for the package that includes dinner, as the dinner is also sumptuous.

The sheets, towel and other linen used in the guest rooms are of top quality. To top it off, Frances, the lady owner, is a charming lady and offers excellent hospitality. The only slight negative (as other reviewers may have commented) is its price - but I suppose you do get what you pay for!

Overall, an enjoyable stay and an excellent choice if you are looking for peace and tranquillity without having to give up on comfort!

Room Tip: Most (if not all) of the rooms have a lovely sea view

We came upon Stella Maris quite by accident. What a treasure. It has the most amazing views of Bunatrahir Bay. Just the place to relax and unwind. Terry and Frances were so welcoming. The conservatory was 100-feet which allowed you to enjoy the views whatever the weather. There was a great selection of comfortable chairs. Our bedroom was spotlessly clean, comfortable and also had these amazing views. To enjoy the sunrise over the mountains was very special from our bedroom.
Pre dinner drinks were served by Terry in the bar where you could relax in comfortable leather chairs or taken to the Conservatory whilst you perused the menu. Frances and was also the Chef Owner and choose the menu from locally sourced produce wherever possible. Food was definitely fine dining, well presented and everything tasted delicious especially the Teriyaki Beef starter and the slow roasted Lamb Shank. Tables were nicely set with linen cloths and napkins. Breakfast was also great and everything was cooked to order. Staff were courteous, attentive and informative.
There is plenty to see and do around the area. Downpatrick Head must not be missed. Céide Fields, Fishing, lovely beaches close by and the local pubs offer charm and chat. I would highly recommend this hotel and will definitely stay again if I am in near this area of Mayo.

Stayed for 3 nights in September. Wonderful location for this charming hotel. The huge glass verandah overlooking Bunatrahir bay has a fabulous view and is a wonderful place to relax with a drink. France's Kelly and Terence McSweeney the owners were charming very welcoming and friendly and made us feel at home. The food was good but not exceptional. We had the same vegetables 3 nights in a row. More variety in the menu would have helped. The rooms had very comfortable beds and terrific views. A few small improvements are required such as nibbles to be supplied with drinks. We would recommend
This hotel for a complete getaway.

Stayed at Stella Maris, Ballycastle, Co Mayo in August 2013 on the recommendation of Ireland's Blue Book. The room was comfortable and quite well appointed, but missed the nice touches such as coffee making facilities, magazines, comment sheet and though the bottled water was complimentary there wasn't a little note telling you this. There were two bottles and one was removed which was puzzling, as staying two nights. Was this action an indicator of things to come? Sitting in the conservatory full of old-fashioned furniture, without magazines but plenty of golf books wasn't very cosy, but the lovely views of Downpatrick Head compensated a bit. Had to find a member of staff to ask for the dinner menu. The wine list didn't show the bottle vintage. The barman wasn't consistent in mixing the spirits and mixers correctly. The fillet steak wasn't cooked to order. In fact the cooking including the breakfast wasn't anything special. There wasn't the little touch of a taster between courses or in the bar pre-dinner. The waiting staff were both good and friendly. The hosts were pleasant and helpful, but Stella Maris needs to up its game if it can justify a place in Ireland's Blue Book.
