“Beautiful setting, great food”
Reviewed August 3, 2012

Recently spent a night in this beautiful hotel. The setting is spectacular but the best thing about it is the food. Great raw material, simply but perfectly cooked. The owners were very welcoming and the young staff efficient, friendly and helpful. The hotel is very close to the Ceide Fields, which are well worth a visit.

Room Tip: Almost all seem to have sea views

My husband and I stayed at Stella Maris 3 nights this spring, just as they opened, and it was everything we dreamed of: magically beautiful setting, right on the water with a view of the dramatic cliffs of Downpatrick Head - a charming, understated elegance in the spectacularly renovated building (masterminded by Francis, wife and co-owner with her sweetheart of a husband, Terry) - gourmet food prepared by Francis, a gourmet chef - a comfortable room with a view to die for. What more can I say, except that both Francis and Terry went WAY above and beyond the call of duty to give us information about the area, even recruit one of their employees to go on a little roadtrip with us to find a property we were looking for! Every evening was a delight, meeting wonderful people in the cozy bar by the fireplace, and enjoying delicious dinners in the lovely dining room.
I want to live there! My only hesitation in writing this review is I want to keep it our secret, but that's not fair to the rest of you.....

There were six of us in a golfing group. We had just driven from Royal County Down, a journey of about five hours, and when we arrived we discovered that we had left the carry on bad of one of our players behind, with his medicine for diabetes in it. Phone calls established the bag was at the hotel we'd been in previously, and a taxi could be dispatched with it immediately. Terence McSweeney the proprietor volunteered to wait up for the taxi, which was expected to arrive about 2.00AM and to bring the bag up to our guest as soon as it arrived.
The situation of Stella Maris is incomparable in terms of the view, the food cooked by Terence's wife Frances Kelly is outstanding, using local ingredients and matching them beautifully to provice true gastronomic experiences every evening. The breakfasts were a work of art, Irish Fry done with touch and class, and lots of other alternatives for those seeking less hearty fare.
There is a wonderful golf course nearby called Carne, and Stella Maris is the place to stay when playing it or for that matter Eniscrone.

Room Tip: All the rooms were on the front overlooking the ocean. Can't really select one over the others...

A country house hotel overlooking Bunatrahir Bay & Downpatrick Head in the distance,
with stunning views & Ross beach (Blue Flag) only a short distance away.
If you want to experience beauty and tranquility of the Mayo coastline, then this is a
must visit. For me this was a stress free location.
We had a lovely meal and the chef Frances introduced herself and we were made
feel very welcome, it was a wee bit expensive but when you are on holidays, you feel
you deserve a treat & it was worth the experience.

On arrival we were made most welcome, and with an upgrade to a sea view room with a bigger bed, things got off to a good start.Afternoon tea was served in the comfortable sunroom surrounded by books, newspapers and lovely old furnishings.Menus each night had plenty of choices, and Francis Kelly is clearly a talented chef;we enjoyed our meals on both evenings. Our room was comfortable, but could perhaps benefit from a touch of luxury. This is a small point, as we enjoyed our stay and hope to return

Room Tip: Request a bigger bed on booking if you need more than standard double

the location was stunning but I really think it was totally overpriced for what was provided. 2nights b& B with one dinner was €419 per person. I would suggest that a little more than half would have been more appropriate. 3star probably more appropriate. Room was small. Food was very good but by no means excellent. On the first night the monkfish was very dry. Portions were small.
However, on the positive the landlady and her husband couldnt have been friendlier. The location is stunning and sitting in the conservatory is just so relaxing.

As price seems to be the primary issue cited, it should be noted that the price stated in the review is incorrect, and almost double our rate at the time of their visit. Two nights in a room fronting the ocean with cooked-to-order breakfasts and a lovely dinner for two persons costs 219 per person. We are sorry that the guests' experience "didn't live up to expectations," but personal expectations are the one area over which we have no direct control. Our recollection is that these guests were quite friendly, stating upon their departure that they were looking forward to a return visit.
