“Perfect for a quiet breakaway”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 16, 2013

If your looking for a quiet night away, look no further. The setting is just lovely made better by this well managed property.
Rooms are ageing well and kept in good shape although I did struggle to get the shower to the correct temperature, spa is also lovely but needs to be refreshed a little.
Dinner in the Strawberry Tree restaurant is a real treat, menu is off the norm but just amazingly good food.
The final piece to the jigsaw are the staff polite, professional but also human which made for a wonderful 24 hours.

At the best of times I'm a cynical consumer. I don't trust "deals" and "sales". I know that in restaurants the margin is made on the extras like dessert, coffee, aperitifs etc etc. My day job involves a lot of international travel and I have stayed in some nice practical hotels, some absolute dumps and have eaten in some pretty cool restaurants around the world. Not expensive exec lifestyle but some nice places in the past 20 years.

If you're like me: Park the tired weary cynicism and enjoy BrookLodge. I couldn't fault it in any way. The staff are normal, motivated and personable people. Clearly the management encourages them and trains them well but at no point did anyone try to upsell to me and my wife. Their only function was to assist, make us welcome and get stuff done. Not the tired "service industry" workers I encounter in my business travels.

The building itself is old style but was custom built so it has all the modern amenities discretely hidden but available when you need them. WiFi? It's just there. None of the seeking passwords you'll find in conventional hotels.

Rooms? Clean and comfortable. We had booked a regular room but due to a cancellation we were offered a junior suite at a very reasonable price and don't regret spending the few extra euro. The bathrooms are modern and clean. The bed was big, comfortable and we slept. The room had air conditioning which was welcome due to the surprising arrival of a heatwave across Ireland this month. The Windows are old style but don't let that fool you: they are double (triple?) glazed and we didn't hear a sound through the night.

That brings me to a really good point: have you ever stayed in a hotel and noticed a wedding party arriving? Go on...your first thought is not best wishes for the happy couple ! It's a concern that you will be woken through the night by the party (especially if it's a proper Irish wedding). Fear not. The wedding that took place during our stay had a party and a half judging by the state of them the next morning. We didn't hear a sound. And out of curiosity we listened but couldnlt hear anything. The management appear have a great system here which slows regular guests sleep while the wedding parties on through the night in Brook Hall which is within a short walk of the main hotel.

We didn't try the Spa. On a budget we decided to wait until next time. Similarly we saved the Strawberry Tree restaurant until next time. If it's anything like it's original incarnation it will be worth the wait.

The Italian restaurant is good value and although I am a veggie there was enough variety there for me to eat two nights in a row.

The grounds are nice to walk around and the free range chickens are hysterically funny in a Doug Larson way. We were able to sit outside in the sunshine and drink tea/wine/beer while reading or surfing the internet.

Pack light: if you want to dress up for dinner go for it. I enjoyed being casual in shorts short and sandals. No stuffiness here.

It was a great way to celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary and we are already scheming to put away a few Euro to go visit again. Pampering without suffocating you. I think that sums it up.

Room Tip: Room 64 is a lovely junior suite.

As a special treat to my wife (due to her having had surgery recently). I decided to splash out and go a bit up market rather than our usual 4* mid-week 2 B&B 1 dinner deal. Of course the fantastic weather made the two day break, but even so the standard of hospitality the lovely spa and the superb food and service made this short getaway one to remember.

My Husband and I stayed at the Brooklodge Hotel last summer, so this is a long over due review. From check in until checkout, everything was great. The highlight of our trip was the Strawberry Tree restaurant. At €65 a head it was steep but well worth it and I would not think twice about going again. Our room was clean and all staff that we encountered were very friendly.

Room Tip: Try the Strawberry Tree Restaurant

I recently took a one night break here with my husband.
we both lead almost separate lives what with work and commitments to our children and families. we booked a package that included a spa treatment and a meal in the Strawberry Tree organic restaurant.
we went mid week and got the deal a little cheaper, though still not as cheap as it can be if you watch for special offers and take advantage of other off peak deals.
Our room was beautiful with a 4 poster bed and antique furniture. the whole place exudes charm and tranquillity. we relaxed from the minute we walked in until long after we left the place.

we took advantage of the spa, with [pool Jacuzzi, steam and sauna and outdoor hot tub. it is spotlessly clean throughout with great facilities. robes and slippers are supplied in the room for your convenience and to save you having to cart all your clothes down to the changing rooms.
after this we lounged in the plush sofas in the bar and read our books over a few drinks.

I might add we went without our kids and saw no kids while there, I believe there is a separate children's pool and an area for children and family eating etc. if this is the case it is very well hidden, as I would have said we were in an adults only hotel..
our room and bathroom were also spotless and came with all mod cons, tea facility etc.

we went for our pre booked meal at 7pm and were in for a massive treat. Strawberry tree is amazing, and the food was out of this world. we hardly spoke thorough the meal as we were too blissed out. the service and staff go all out to make you feel special and at home.

the spa itself is an oasis. from the moment you walk in you feel like you are being treated to something special. we don't usually do spa treatments so we might be easily impressed but we were given beautiful 1.5 hour treatments within our packages.. but what I liked about the spa treatments is you are charged by time, not treatment, which means you just pay for half hour, hour or 1.5 hours etc, in other hotels the different treatments are individually priced.. this gave us an opportunity to try other treatments we might normally avoid because of price.

breakfast was up there with the nicest I have ever had in any hotel, lots of choice and all cooked breakfasts are made fresh to order.

all in all I would give this hotel 11 out of 10 for service, attention to detail, attention to guests and a feeling of old world character, charm and grace you don't get in most modern hotel breaks anymore.. little bit pricey if you just go on a whim but still worth it.

We had our Fairytale Wedding at this wonderful hotel, and it has to be said that over the last 2 years, during the planning stages and up to the moment we left Brook Lodge, it was flawless from start to finish. The Wedding Team ( Niamh, Esther and Sarah) are so calm and relaxed that you know everything will go to plan, and attention to detail is key. They even managed to source the best day of the summer with 25 degree sunshine. We spent the day before outside the pub, with guesst enjoying the weather and fabulous food and wine. A full Momma's table on the eve of the wedding was so special, food was so different with big platters and to top it all, craic and live music before bed. Our suite was amazing as were all the rooms, breakfast top class. The boys enjoyed the wedding morning in the Hot Tub. The chapel was so beautifully decorated, as was Brook Hall for our reception. What can I say about the food, our guests are still talking about it. We had a singer to entertain us on the lawn before dinner, and the wedding team stage managed everything with such precision. Niamh you were amazing, as was Pavel in the dining room, and Niall in the Bar, made our night. It was the day dreams are made of, and so well priced for all we got. Cannot wait to get back for a sneaky break. Recently engaged , look no further for the idyllic venue with outstanding staff who deliver a very personal experience.
