“Very enjoyable visit”
Reviewed May 27, 2013

My wife and I were invited to dinner in The Brown Bear last Saturday. Had heard of the place but no other preconceptions. Two Mile House is a small village in Kildare.
From the outside it is a very unpretentious Bar/Restaurant. Very nice bar, had a drink there before going into the restaurant, very nice and spacious.
Menu is short on choice but high on quality, 7 starters ranging from €7 to €11, our group chose, Scallops, Crab and Langoustine, all were well pleased, presentation on the plate was impressive.
Mains ranging from €17 to €28 for the Fillet taken were Brill, Veal, Lamb shoulder and Fillet. Everyone of us left spotless plates, vegatables were Fries, New Potatoes, Glazed Carrots, Green Beans and a great Colcannon.
Desserts taken were Creme Brulee, very tasty and crunchy, Cheese selection ( wide variety ) and Trifle. It was an excellent meal. A few bottles of Pinot Noir went down a treat.
Definitely going back.

“Let Down”
Reviewed April 21, 2013

We have eaten many times here and when it opened the food was quirky. It improved over the years adjusting to local tastes.
The bread and wine list are superb.
Last night I had a terrible meal and complained with no satisfaction or answer from the staff.- In fact they sulked!
Starter consisted of a slab of rare beef with white asparagus
Mains were Breast of Lamb which was awful - compressed lamb meat in the shape of square.
Both starter and main were completely underwhelming - Lamb dish was €26 and €5 extra for colcannon.
Quirkiness has returned sadly and we won't be returning.

“Over-rated!”
Reviewed March 27, 2013

Dined here with my family and we all found is very disappointing. We had heard so much about it before so we were all excited to try it out... The food menu was very small with little choices, and overpriced for the tiny portion sizes. When we arrived in the hostess was very rude and just told us take a seat in the bar even though we had a reservation. We all work in the catering industry so we understand if you are busy but there was around 3 tables in the restaurant at 3pm! We had to wait 20 minutes for our table and nobody offered us a menu or a drink! We eventually ordered a carafe of wine and had to ask twice again before it even arrived to us.
The combination of food that is chosen in the dishes do not compliment the flavours of eachother. For example, the lamb was served in a pea soup which does not go well together and the dessert was so sour we couldn't even eat it! Rhubarb should be sweet and tasty not bitter and sour. I think the chef is trying too hard with his new ideas. Lamb should be served with a gravy sauce not with soup and goats cheese powder!
It was very disappointing and service was terrible. Nobody asked us how was our meal and when we complained about the dessert the waitress just continued her work and shrugged her shoulders. Bill was overpriced and wouldn't recommend to anyone. Will not return.

“Lovely relaxed resturant”
Reviewed March 15, 2013

We went for dinner here last Friday night with family. The food was very reasonable priced and the selection was very good. The five of us were very happy with the meal. The offer a free lift home as well which was great and saved on taxi fare as it's a little bit out of the way. Well worth a visit though.
