We had a chance to spent a night with my girlfriend in Cashel House. We found it easily as there are signs all the way. Its hidden in the middle of paradise. Its tranquil, peacefull place. If you want to escape from everyday stress, thats the right place to go. We were welcomed by receptionist who gave us all usefull informations about the place. Another gentleman helped us with luggage and showed us our room. We were amazed, we felt like hundred years ago, room was so authentic, it was clean and bed was so comfortable:o). Of course we wanted to see the grounds. Its amazig. Beautiful flowers, lovely woodlandwalks...we spent about an hour just walking and enjoiyng ourselfs. When we returned we ordered some drinks and we enjoiyng them outside sitting on the bench. Then we went to prepare ourselfs for dinner. We dressed properly and we started in bar where young gentleman was looking for us. He was very friendly and he answered all our neverending questions. He gave us the menu so we could order by the time we where siping our pre dinner drinks. Of course we had to think for a while to chose what we want because everything seemed to be very tempting. After a while we were told our table is ready. As we love wine we had a special look at the wine list. There was a nice selection from both Old World and New World. Its clear and there is also nice selection of wines by the glass. Dinner was fabulous, we had lovely table with view to the garden. Food was cooked properly as we can say with love and passion. Service was proffesional, friendly and very attentive. After dinner they offered us coffe in sitting room and we bought some nice cigars in the bar and we enjoyed them outside. We both were very satisfied. We slept like small children, bed was so comfortable and dark and silence from outside was perfect for nice sleep. Breakfast was also great tasty and we were just sorry that we have to leave. We both would recommend Cashel House for people who want to escape for a while from reality.

The garden is most beautiful with lovely walks throughout the 50 acres. The food is absolutely delicious, the bedroom we stayed in was most comfortable and had lovely views of the garden. The proprietor Mrs McEvilly was very warm and welcoming.

We stayed on a Sunday Times offer for two nights in June '08. Accommodation was free but we spent Euro 100 on an upgrade to a better room. I just rediscovered the bill and was moved to write this report.

Two nights accommodation: Euro 100 for room upgrade (not really made clear that it was 50x2 ... and I have just realised that it was subject 12.5% service!)

Four breakfasts @ Euro 15 each; Four dinners @ Euro 60 each; 3 glasses house wine @ Euros7.10 each; bottle of water @Euro 5.95 ... service charge of Euro 53.40.

Total:Euro 480.65 ... (almost £385). Remember, that was with Euro 100 accommodation. I reckon that £190+ each is ludicrous.
How many times would one leave a gratuity / tip of well over £20 for an evening meal for two ... which is effectively what it was.

The food was quite good but the price of bottled wines spoilt the meal: the cheapest was a 6x mark up on my local wine shop.

The service in the restaurant was friendly and efficient but at the reception desk the mood was very casual. The room on one level was pleasant with a view over the gardens (which are very attractive), but on another it was very old-fashioned. Perhaps it is fortunate, given the pricing structure, that there was no minibar. I know that TV is a curse but, given the prices, there should have been something other than the ancient one with virtually no channels. The hotel is 'tired'. 12.5% service charge on everything?!

Sorry, every time I check their website I cannot believe it.

Priced to keep out the riff-raff, no doubt. The credit crunch may bring more realism. Funny enough we generally enjoyed our stay in this beautiful area ... never pore over an old bill!

We greatly appreciate the time guests take to write honest reviews and we take the content very seriously. The 12.5% service charge is a relic of a by-gone era and has been eradicated. All rates published now are inclusive of all taxes and charges. Cashel House has purposely tried to retain the atmosphere of an Irish Country House. We defend our decision to stay a family home with all it's iodiosyncracies and for which most of our guests enjoy and remember fondly.

I can still see the gardens of Cashel House in my mind. Not just on sunny days - even when it is raining here in London, I think 'every cloud has a silver lining', this rain helped those plants grow when in pased over that lovely garden in the west of Ireland.

Care was lavished on the plant. care was lavished on us as guests. Cashel House is perhaps one of the most hospitable places we have been to. It is a wonderful place for - of the more mature generation - to enjoy a peaceful and quiet time, with every reasonable comfort we could hope for - and excellent food

  • Liked — food, friendliness, gardens, surrounding countryside
  • Disliked — the decor was not always to our taste

We stayed in the Cashel House Hotel in early August for three days, one of the first stops on our tour of Ireland. It was not just the beauty of the gardens, and the tranquillity of the surroundings: the splendour of the food matched the splendour of the views of the gardens that we enjoyed at the dinner table each evening. We have also since sent an extra gratuity as a ‘thank you’ to the helpful, cordial staff.

We just returned from 10 days in Ireland, and of all the hotels I had booked, I was most looking forward to Cashel House. Their web site it well-done and the photos of the house and grounds are lovely. Unfortunately the reality was very disappointing.

The house is decorated with a lot of Victoriana frou-frou, and it's quickly apparent that not much has changed since the much lauded visit of General Charles de Gaulle in the 1960's. The lounge next to the bar must have 30 white (modern at the time) wooden chairs that look like they were bought from the set of a Star Trek television series.

The hotel is located in a beautiful part of Ireland, and...I know...it might seem trite to want to be able to go online in such a lovely location. But this is the 21st century and no online access except for one shared computer which sits in a small "play room" next to a kids lego set just doesn't cut it.

It is nice that the hotel is family run, and Mrs. McEvilly seems to be there 24/7. She is friendly and very much in control. Theoretically this is a good thing, but I'm afraid that my feeling was that it's time for a new generation of owners to make sweeping changes to this tired hotel.

Even though we had booked a room for 3 nights, we were so disappointed that we canceled the last two nights and only stayed for one. They were nice enough to not balk at this last minute change.

We always appreciate honest and forthright reviews of Cashel House. It is an excellent median in which we can improve. Regarding this review.

Cashel House is still very much a family home and family run business. For each piece of the Victoriana frou frou mentioned there holds a memory and a story which makes Cashel special. Something we have no intention of changing.

We too long for a reliable and fast internet connection. Guests are able to connect via satellite and there is wireless in some areas of the hotel. However we agree that it is not perfect and we are continually lobbying for a better service.

Cashel House has been operated by the McEvilly family for 40 years. Kay McEvilly is a natural and gifted hostess whose sole concern is her guests happiness and enjoyment. We most certainly do not feel that a change of management would benefit anybody.

First the good things: we had booked one suite and one std room for our teenage kids and they upgraded our kids so we could be together. The rooms had a countryhouse kind of charm and beautiful gardens.
As for the rest..the attitude of the staff generally was as if they were doing us a favour letting us into their hotel. They were cold with a take it or leave it attitide.
The loos!!!!! The showers simply do not work. They had to change our shower head reluctantly (they initially said well why dont you shower in your kids' room?) but the water pressure is so bad that the water trickles down. They are aware of this but said they cannot install a pump to increase the water pressure as the guests object that its too niosy!?! I decided to have a tub bath instead and was HORRIFIED!!! The water is yellowish green. They said that was normail because it comes down from the mountains....? I guess if you dont mind bathng in water that looks like jaundiced urine, go there otherwise just dont!
Lastly, they have an overpriced stuffy restaurant with average food and the nearest pub/restaurant is atleast 10 miles away, so if you stay here you wil be stuck.
And they charged us about 290 Euros per room for this crap.

  • Liked — the rooms were nice if you like the old world style
  • Disliked — the Loos and the location

Thank you for your extremely forthright review. I am sorry but we cannot defend every criticsm levelled at us other than the comments most certainly hit home and we have seriously looked at procedures and attitudes.

The water discolouration problem has been resolved in that we no longer rely on mountain springs. It is a shame as even though coloured, springs supplied the purest of water.

The water pressure problem is being worked on as this is being written

We can only offer a contrite, sincere and belated apology if staff attitude was anything but helpful and sympathetic.
