This is an old world hotel with wonderful old fashioned rooms.
The whole place is very accomodating with a folksie bar and a grand side to the hotel as well.
the owner is Colm Redmond a charming wonderful host .Be his friend and you will have a fantastic time.
The area around the hotel is probably the most wonderful scenic place in south connemara, come rain or shine.
Go hungry and tired and relax and enjoy

Room Tip: Get a room with a view.

Stopped off here for a drink while out for a drive around connemara! Decided to sit in the lounge area off the bar. After getting our drinks a staff member came into the lounge and asked us to move into the public bar as this area was for residents only. Couldn't believe the rudeness of this. It was 5 o'clock on a Sunday evening and the place was empty. We often stop off in hotels around the country when out for a drive and would usually sit in the lounge or lobby. Won't be going back or recommending this place to friends or family.

The staff is incredibly friendly, the views from the dining room are amazing, and the food is delicious. Everyone at the Zetland House was so accommodating. Martina, at reception, kept checking to make sure we were comfortable. Colin made us laugh with his stories horses. I can't wait to go back!

My initial conversation over the phone with Ms Cooke when I booked a room was good and the welcome to Zetland Country House was excellent. The greeting was a family one of warmth and information. The room and view were splendid, and everything was wonderful. The owner was a hands on treat as he played French music in the bar to welcome some French cyclists. He even dispensed free samples of a house Whiskey- Irish Fiddler. He had books in Irish on a table in the entrance. The breakfasts were lovely. Food in the bar and in the restaurant was top class, and the staff were very friendly and helpful. I was in the area for the first Connemara, Ted Hughes Weekend. This was a wonderful weekend and the Zetland added so much to my enjoyment

Room Tip: Rooms overlooking the tidal bay are wonderful

This is a pretty, quaint, old hotel, on a lovely property, with lots of history. Problem for me was my room was cold, clammy and had a dank odor (as if it had been closed up all winter and I was the first occupant this season--which may have been the case since I was part of a small bicycle touring group early in May). My twin bed mattress was broken down and so uncomfortable that I had to put my feet at the headboard to try to avoid the broken down edge. Others in my group, however, reported that their rooms were lovely. (To be fair I didn't contact management about my bed issues so maybe they would have moved me to another room? but the mattress was old and awful in any case). I had a water view room.
Another thing that troubled me is our group had a seated, group dinner in a large, formal, sequestered dining room which ran directly against when the Irish music was performing in the bar (something we were eager to hear). Fortunately a staff member came in during our dessert and told us that we could hear the last half hour if we hurried into the bar (which we did). Ironically, they start and end the music much earlier than most Irish pubs, which for a bicycle group is perfect since we go to bed earlier than most pubs even start the music! Perhaps this problem was more a function of the cycling company booking the meal for a specific time and not realizing it was running over our opportunity to hear an Irish music session? The music was fun and the bar cozy. I also have to say the Manager at this hotel was really "visible", running around trying to be pleasant.

Character by the bucket-load; the hotel, the owner, the staff, the area - there was nothing plastic or insipid about this place.

We booked top-of-the-range rooms with sea views for our three night stay. The rooms were huge with comfortable furniture and the view was glorious, out over the attractive garden and into the bay. Furnishings were traditional. The decor in the bedrooms suited us; not minimalist, not over-powering country chintz but somewhere comfortably in-between, simple and airy.

The public areas were country house style but not over-designed or over-whelming. Furniture was great for sinking into with a good book and the open fires provided a delightful focal point.

Our one meal in the restaurant was excellent and the surroundings luxurious. We also had a bar meal in "Johnny O'Loughlin's" the attached pub which is used by locals and passing trade as well as hotel guests. Two of us had eaten there a few times previously when on self-catering holidays in the village. The food has always been excellent value, well cooked and presented and everybody is very friendly. The bar is warm and cosy with plenty of off-road parking.

Breakfast is served in the small dining room beside the bar (as is bar food sometimes). There is a wide range of cereals and other cold items and the cooked breakfast menu is extensive, you pick and choose from it as suits you.

This is the total antithesis of bland chain hotels where you can forget where you are as the decor is virtually the same throughout a country and sometimes throughout the world, it offers personal service and individual styling. It has interesting photographs of people who have been hugely important in the story of Ireland and the background is explained to anybody who wants more information. You know you are in Ireland when in The Zetland.

The area is glorious and within easy reach of sandy beaches (Moyrus near Glinsk and the beach between Carna and Kilkieran are two of my favourites) and the village of Roundstone and town of Clifden are not far at all, there are a number of sandy beaches on the coast between them, Gurteen is probably the largest but there are many more. You often see turf being cut as you travel around the area and there are many aspects of history woven into the landscape, from the social history of the famine and emigrations to the great achievements of Marconi and Alcock and Brown. There is a lot to do and a lot to see and The Zetland is a great hotel to stay while you are doing it.

Colm, the owner, is welcoming and friendly and he has gathered a staff that does him proud, I wish I could meet the like of them every time I stay in a hotel, sadly, I rarely do.

Room Tip: The sea view is well worth the slight increase in room rate

We spent two nights at the hotel as a base to visit Connemara. We chosed it first because it had connecting rooms which were hard to come by in the region. Also we were looking for a relatively secluded place with some traditional feel to it. And we were not disappointed. Zetland is not a high tech, ultra modern hotel. The tv for example are not flat screen and were so small my kids thought there were not any! but it is a really nice place, secluded, with lots of character. People were amazingly friendly and helpful. We had a room facing the lake which added to the feel. The rooms were very spacious too. There two options for dinner, the bar/pub food which we thought was ok and the fine dining restaurant we did not try. We chosed to go to neighbouring hotel for our second dinner just for a change. Breakfast buffet is simple but you can order a full breakfast and eggs etc for no extra charge.

Room Tip: One facing the lake!
