“Quality and Great Value”
Reviewed May 7, 2007

Great little B&B! Ideal location 5-10 minutes walk from the main village on Island and two houses away from newly decorated pub (best in town, I think).
We stayed overnight and had double and twin rooms booked. Moderate size bedrooms, brand new bathroom (excellent hot shower). Pleasant breakfast in the morning; the host offered breakfast outside of regular hours if we had opted for 8.30 am ferry. The lounge was nicely decorated to create a warm cozy atmosphere (really feels like home)
Overall if it was a hotel I would have given it 3-4 stars. Highly recommended.

We stayed in Clai Ban during a weekend trip to Inismore. Our room was well decorated, clean and cosy. Our host advised us on the restaturants in nearby Kilronan and we ate in Pier House (great sea food). Breakfast both mornings was substantial with the added value of traditional Irish music played by the owners children. Id stay there anytime.

It has being many years since we stayed in a Town and Country "inspected" B&B and therefore were not surprised to see same low shabby standards are still officially sanctioned and maintained.

There is no doubt as to the fact that the owner is a very affable and likable person who met us with pleasantness on arrival and amiable chat over 'breakfast'.Regretfully we were not shown any further 'hospitality' such as being pointed in direction of guest Lounge or any other interaction once deposited to our 'room'.Our experiences from thereon show as to why Clai Ban is the epitomy as to why the small B&B trade is slowly dying, through lack of owner investment, proper Inspection proceedures and superior Guesthouse/Hotel led quality.

We originally intended to stay on Inismore for a 3 night stay, with intention of staying in Guesthouses or a Hotel. To our dismay, all our lodging choices were not available due to various reasons, which lead to Tourist Office pointing us to Clai Ban as the only Approved B&B available on whole Island! The B&B is approx 1.5 km from Pier, along the Boreen and is sited on elevated site behind another house.Brightly painted in a warm Yellow,it is a bungalow with 6 Guest bedrooms.

We were shown to room 5 ,which is upstairs and front facing.A very small room, which does not allow more than single file traffic around the bed.Bathroom is large but very dated with broken window handle. A tea tray and a hair-dryer are provided. But realistically everything within room should have being replaced years ago.Mattress, linen, pillows were truly fit only for the dump.Towels in bathroom were little more than cast offs with no drying capability whatsoever.

Now, one can survive with such basics for a one night experience but not if you add in the frightful cold of the place. We came back that evening to tepid heating which soon died an early death. And this on a night where outside temperatures were no more that 1-2o C. We both awoke at approx 4am from bitter cold and that was end of sleep! No extra blankets or independent heating to be found. What a long and unforgettable drag until breakfast. Terrible!

We went down at 8.30 for breakfast to the 'dining room' cum 'guest room' which badly needs investment and remodelling. Not dirty in any way , but just that jaded, tired unappealing feel and look. Watery cheap juice, limited cereal and main course choice finished off this supposed Town and Country 'gem', that is supposed to be a reflection of why people would wish to stay in a B&B.

In essence ,it is no wonder that 25% of 'Town and Country' inspected and controlled B&Bs have closed since 2001.We read constantly as to their bewilderment as to why such a collapse is happening. We can add no further than for them to sample their own delights and see the genuine reasons as to collapse. There most assuredly HAS to be quality small B&Bs but as long as 'gems 'such as Clai Ban are allowed to exist , then the whole barrel gets contaminated.

We left Inismore that afternoon after doing a beautiful cliff walk and travelled to Clifden ,where we stayed at Joyces Waterloo Guesthouse for the 2 nights we should have stayed on Inismore.

My gosh, there is where Irish hospitality, comfort and quality is truly all about! And regretfully, that is Inismore's and the small B&B sectors loss.

After visiting Galway and being unimpressed with the city, my daughter and I spent two days exploring the Aran Islands. We stayed at Clai Ban B + B, where the owner was just fantastic. Actually, he was the most friendly of all the inkeepers that we met during our travels in Ireland. A great place to stay, added value listening to his sons rehersing their music, and a nice, guiet pub right down the lane. The Man of Aran restaurant opened for the season the night we were there. A nice meal with good service.
