Owner description: Perched on a cliff overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, Dun Aonghasa is the largest of the prehistoric stone forts of the Aran Islands. It is enclosed by three massive dry-stone walls and a chevaux-de-frise consisting of blocks of limestone set vertically into the ground to deter attackers. Originally constructed c.1100BC, it was re-fortified around 700-800 AD. Excavations revealed significant evidence of prehistoric metalworking, as well as several burials.

Definitely make the trek up to see Dun Aengus - Great view of the cliffs/ocean. Amazing to see such history.

“Stunning view”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 20, 2013

My husband and I took a boat ride over to Inishmore and had a great day! A mini van driver took us to all of the attractions on the island for only $10 euro a person. One other group of three came with us. We stopped at a little cafe that had great soup and stew. Then we went to the fort, which offered fantastic views of the cliffs. We were forunate that we had a beautiful day. It is a good bit of a walk up to the fort, but it was well worth it. The heineken we had at the cafe tasted even better after the hike! I would recommend going to Inishmore and the fort of aonghasa while in Ireland. It was one of my favorite days in this country.

“Well worth the hike up the hill...”

Even in awful weather or maybe because of it - the fort is well worth a visit, very atmospheric... go - you won't regret it!

“Amazing!”

A bit of a hike but well worth the history and incredable views! It puts a whole new perspective on what it took to live in those times.

“Visited with Tomás on pony and trap! A MUST SEE!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 9, 2013

A must see when on the Island! Tomás (Horse and Trap guide) actually walked us up to the Poll na bPeist (the worm hole) which is beside where the Fort is.

Be careful of high winds when up there but be prepared to witness the best the island can offer! :)
