..when we visited Biddy's cottage in Dalkey. Our extended family group of 9 adults (including one from England and one from Holland) were all welcomed with open arms by Biddy to her delightful cottage in Dalkey. The bright red half door was open, the lamp and candles were lit and the turf fire was burning brightly. Our mother who is 86 years old got a special welcome and as Biddy told us her stories, our mother told her own tales, some of which we had not heard before. Biddy's tales and stories are personal because each one has a link to the locality and/or to someone she knows - her father, uncles, aunts, other relatives and neighbours. Their photographs adorn the walls of the cottage which Biddy, with the help of her father, restored from a ruin to its present state of peace and comfort. The cottage is furnished with traditional pieces from the 19th and 20th centuries. Biddy has a story to tell about each piece, where it was found, who made it and its use in the typical Irish household.
Then it was time for tea and Biddy's homemade oat cakes - and even these come with their own story! All too soon it was time to go and we left, promising to return soon.
We would highly recommend a visit to see Biddy if you want to hear some genuine stories told from the heart in a comfortable and unique cottage environment.

I went here on Tuesday night, and it was one of the loveliest and most unusual evenings I've ever had. Biddy is a very special lady, the kind of person you'll never forget. She is so warm and welcoming. The second you step in the front door of the cottage you feel at home. Biddy's stories were fascinating, and told in a very natural manner. You didn't feel like you were at a lecture, but like you were hearing a really interesting story told by a friend. I effortlessly learned a great deal about Irish history and folklore. I left with a warm feeling in my heart and lots of fodder for thought!

My mom and I stumbled upon Biddy's cottage one day walking down to the harbor in the pouring rain. The red dutch door and the open sign caught my eye, and I was immediately drawn in. Biddy and her sister warmly beckoned us in out of the rain and proceeded to show us her precious artwork. The cottage was something out of a fairytale and Biddy was as sweet as could be. Definitely a lucky little find.

We visited Biddy's beautiful old cottage which is located beside Coliemore harbour in Dalkey this week. The cottage is part museum, part art gallery and all homely. Biddy welcomed everyone as friends and told stories of her own family and what life was like for people in Ireland going back generations. This oral tradition of story telling in Ireland is famous and is very well represented by Biddy. One American lady in our group said it was the highlight of her visit. That I feel says it all. A must visit.

For an Evening with a difference Biddy's cottage is just great - a trip down memory lane. Biddy is a great host, firstly welcoming us at the half door and was really great with our kids. This is a break from the usual hustle & bustle of life and a nice couple of hours chatting about the old times in rural Ireland. Biddy explains how people managed with cooking on an open fire and other duties that we can take for granted these days. We all really enjoyed the evening sitting by the fire in this cosy cottage in Dalkey, a lovely part of Dublin. The home baked oat biscuits and hot tea from the big pot were wonderful. We hope to visit Biddy again.
